About CBS Sports: Live Scores & News

The CBS Sports app is free for scores, news, GameTracker play-by-play and two 24/7 channels, CBS Sports HQ and CBS Sports Golazo Network, but NFL on CBS, the Champions League and other live events open only after a TV provider or Paramount+ sign-in. Its Picks tab runs free bracket and Pick'em contests, while season-long fantasy teams need a separate app. The main catch: ads stay, and no in-app purchase removes them.

CBS Sports Review: Free Scores and HQ, but Live NFL Needs a Login

What Streams Free: CBS Sports HQ, Golazo and the Scoreboard

Without paying, you get scores, news, alerts and two around-the-clock channels. CBS Sports HQ, on air since February 2018, carries news, highlights and analysis with no cable subscription needed, per CBS's help center; CBS Sports Golazo Network, launched in April 2023, does the same for soccer, with select live matches. The asterisked part of the listing is gated: NFL on CBS, the Champions League, Big Ten games, the Masters and the 24/7 CBS Sports Network feed require a participating TV provider login, Paramount+, or both. Any Paramount+ subscriber can stream an NFL game in the app when it airs on the local CBS station. For studio shows and soccer alone, that beats ESPN Unlimited, $31.99 a month since September 17, 2026, or DAZN at $34.99; prices vary by region.

GameTracker, Live Activities and the Picks Tab

For games you can't watch, GameTracker is the core tool: play-by-play, win probability, drive charts and box scores on one page, plus a comments thread for signed-in users, extended in August 2026 to UFC event pages and golf leaderboards. On iPhone, Live Activities, added in October 2025, keep NFL and college football scores on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. The Picks tab holds the free contests: March Madness brackets, Football Pick'em straight up, against the spread or as a survivor pool, and a UFC Pick'em Challenge with cash prizes since June 2026. Season-long fantasy is absent: CBS's help center says teams show only in the separate CBS Sports Fantasy app.

Odds, $13.99 SportsLine Picks and a Switch to Hide Them

Free game pages carry an odds tab; the store screenshot shows spread, moneyline and total with opening and current lines and a public-bet percentage. The paid layer is SportsLine, CBS's expert-picks service and the only in-app purchase: $13.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $139.99 a year on the App Store, with prices varying by region. SportsLine says its model simulates each game 10,000 times and that qualifying members get Paramount+ Premium at no extra cost. If you want none of it, version 11.43 in February 2025 added a switch on the Scores Preferences page, also in Settings, that turns betting and gambling features off.

Ads, Cross-App Tracking and the September 2026 Redesign

Google Play shows a Contains ads badge, Apple lists advertising in the age rating, and no purchase removes ads. Apple's privacy card says location, identifiers and usage data may track you across other companies' apps; Play lists device IDs as shared for advertising. Paramount Skydance's privacy policy, modified May 12, 2026, says identifiers, location and online activity may be sold or shared for targeted ads; the Your Privacy Choices opt-out sits in settings, and ads continue after it. Nielsen measurement software is built in. Of the 150 newest English Play reviews, August 17 to October 1, 2026, 58 give one or two stars: 15 describe streams that never started, five after a provider or Paramount+ sign-in, and several object to social posts in the redesigned Home feed.

Cons

  • NFL on CBS and Champions League streams need a TV provider or Paramount+
  • Ads appear for everyone, and no purchase removes them
  • 15 of 58 recent low Play ratings describe live streams that never started
  • Fantasy teams don't show here; they require the separate CBS Sports Fantasy app

Verdict

We score it 6.9: a strong free core held back by ads, tracking and unreliable live streams. Take it if you follow the NFL, college football or European soccer and want free scores, GameTracker and the HQ and Golazo channels, or already pay for a TV provider or Paramount+. Skip it if you expected free NFL streams on your phone, want fantasy leagues and news in one app, or won't accept cross-app ad tracking.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you watch NFL games on the CBS Sports app for free?

No, not without a sign-in: NFL on CBS streams in the app only after a participating TV provider or Paramount+ login, and the game must air on your local CBS station, per CBS's help center. Free without any login: CBS Sports HQ, the Golazo Network soccer channel, scores, news and GameTracker.

2

Why can't I see my fantasy team in the CBS Sports app?

Season-long fantasy lives in a different download: CBS's help center says your teams and leagues appear only in the CBS Sports Fantasy app, not in the main app. Its Picks tab covers the free contests instead, such as March Madness brackets, Football Pick'em, survivor pools and UFC Pick'em.

3

How much is SportsLine in the CBS Sports app, and what does it add?

SportsLine, the only in-app purchase, costs $13.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $139.99 a year on the App Store; check the current price in the app, as it varies by region. It adds subscriber-only expert picks, and SportsLine says qualifying members get Paramount+ Premium at no extra cost.

4

Can I delete my CBS Sports data or stop it being sold?

Yes. Google Play says the developer accepts data deletion requests, and Paramount Skydance's privacy policy takes them through its Privacy Rights Center or (888) 841-3343. To stop sale or sharing for targeted ads, use Your Privacy Choices in the app's settings; ads continue, less personalized, and the choice may need repeating on each device.

5

Can you turn off betting odds in the CBS Sports app?

Yes. Since version 11.43 in February 2025, a switch on the Scores Preferences page of the Scores tab, or in Settings, turns off betting and gambling features. Without it, odds appear on game pages and SportsLine picks are labeled as subscriber content.
