Best Sports Apps for Scores and Live Games, Ranked
ESPN is the best sports app for most fans: scores, news, alerts and radio for every sport are free, and one plan, ESPN Unlimited at $31.99 a month, pu
The league's official app pairs a free scoreboard, news and highlights with NFL+, a subscription that streams live local and primetime games for $6.99 a month. The rules are narrow: those live games play only on a phone or tablet, out-of-market Sunday afternoon games are excluded at every tier, and recent Google Play reviews are dominated by login and streaming failures.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Without paying, the app covers the scoreboard: live scores and drive charts for every game, breaking news, and highlight clips that run with ads until you subscribe. The free NFL Channel streams league programming around the clock. A pay-TV login opens more: customers of Xfinity, Spectrum, DirecTV, YouTube TV and other providers can watch in-market games, the league's cable network or RedZone, depending on their package. Season-long fantasy is gone from the 2026 season; ESPN Fantasy is now the official game, and commissioners move old leagues through an import tool on ESPN, signing in with the same email.
The base plan, $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year, streams the games airing on TV in your market plus Sunday, Monday and Thursday night games, seven exclusive games on the league's own network and select Saturday matchups. All of those live games are restricted to phones and tablets: the official help center says they cannot be cast to a television during the event, and the iOS listing rules out HDMI, Chromecast and AirPlay output. Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games are missing at every tier, because they belong to Sunday Ticket on YouTube. What the plan does cover for all 32 teams is audio, with home, away and national radio calls for every game. It is sold only in the US, excluding territories, and prices may change.
Premium, $14.99 a month or $99.99 a season in the US, adds RedZone, which cuts between up to eight games at once across a seven-hour Sunday window, plus full and condensed replays and All-22 coaches film on TVs as well. NFL Pro, with more than 95 stats and a fantasy assistant powered by AWS, belongs to the tier but runs on desktop and mobile web, not in the app. Both plans allow three streams at once at up to 1080p and 60 frames per second. Live games keep the broadcast's ad breaks, and condensed replays can take up to 24 hours to appear. Refunds cover only duplicate purchases or serious, ongoing technical trouble.
On September 13, 2026, during the eight-game 1 p.m. ET window of opening Sunday, streams failed to load or froze; Downdetector logged more than 15,000 reports and the league apologized. Google Play shows a 2.4 average from 644K reviews against 4.5 on the App Store, and 124 of the 150 newest English Play reviews give one star, mostly over paid accounts read as unsubscribed, forced re-logins and crashes, plus alerts for teams with notifications off. On privacy, Google Play's form declares no data shared with third parties, while Apple's label lists location, purchases and identifiers as data used to track you, and the March 2026 privacy policy allows precise geolocation to be disclosed to third parties for location-based advertising.

We give it 6.2. The base plan is the cheapest official way to watch your local team and every primetime game live, and Premium adds RedZone and All-22 film for viewers who follow many games at once. Take it if you watch on a phone inside your team's market. Skip it if you need games on the living-room TV, follow an out-of-market team on Sundays, or cannot tolerate the login failures that dominate recent reviews.

Only with a pay-TV login: customers of Xfinity, Spectrum, DirecTV, YouTube TV and other providers can watch in-market games, the league's cable network or RedZone, depending on their package. Without one, live streams on a phone need a subscription from $6.99 a month in the US, while scores and highlights stay free.
Not for live local and primetime games: the help center says they play only on phones and tablets and cannot be cast, and the iOS listing rules out HDMI, Chromecast and AirPlay output. On-demand video can use AirPlay, and Premium's replays and RedZone run on TV apps for Roku OS 11+, Fire TV 6+, Apple TV and Xbox Series X|S.
The base plan is $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year, and Premium is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a season, plus tax, in the US. The help center warns that buying through Apple, Google, Roku or Amazon may add fees, and lapsed subscribers on iOS can take 30% off three monthly payments until October 27, 2026.
Web subscribers cancel under Manage Subscriptions in their NFL.com account; App Store and Google Play subscribers cancel in that store. Refunds are discretionary and limited to duplicate purchases or serious, ongoing technical problems, and in-app purchases are refunded only by the store. Deleting the account itself goes through a separate web request form.
It is cheaper but narrower. ESPN Unlimited costs $29.99 a month, has carried the league's cable network since July 30, 2026, adds 17 Monday night games and plays on a TV. Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV, needed for out-of-market Sunday games, was offered at $192 for new and $378 for returning subscribers this season. Fans outside the US are pointed to Game Pass on DAZN.
