About TP-Link Tapo

TP-Link Tapo is the control app for Tapo cameras, doorbells, plugs and bulbs, plus most Kasa gear, and its cameras work without a subscription: they record to a microSD card of up to 512 GB, including 24/7 on wired models. Tapo Care adds cloud history from $3.49 a month per camera and an AI tier at $19.99. The trade-off is the app itself, which now shows TP-Link product promotions on the home tab.

TP-Link Tapo Review: Cameras Work Free, but the App Keeps Selling

What Tapo cameras do without a Tapo Care plan

Without a plan, footage goes to a microSD card of up to 512 GB that you buy separately, and the oldest clips are overwritten when loop recording is on. If the router drops, the card keeps recording, though live view, playback and alerts stop until Wi-Fi returns. Activity notifications and person detection work for free on supported models; Rich Notifications with a snapshot are marked Tapo Care Required in TP-Link's settings guide. Two hardware limits shape the setup: a camera runs only two of its three outputs at once (microSD, Tapo Care, ONVIF or NVR), and clips on the card download only while the phone is on the camera's Wi-Fi network. For larger setups, the Tapo H500 HomeBase stores footage from up to 16 cameras on 16 GB of built-in memory or a drive of up to 16 TB, with no monthly fee.

Cloud Advanced AI at $19.99: Aireal summaries, search and face matching

Tapo Care comes in three US tiers. Cloud costs $3.49 a month per camera, for up to two cameras, and keeps 30 days of clips in standard HD. Cloud Advanced, $11.99 a month or $119.99 a year, covers unlimited cameras in one home with 180 days of history at up to 4K. Cloud Advanced AI, $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, adds Aireal: a written summary of each motion event, AI video search, a chat assistant that answers questions about your footage, and facial recognition. Face matching is not offered in Illinois or Texas, so buyers there get the top tier without it. Each cloud clip stops at 3 minutes. Prices are regional and may change, and TP-Link warns that the web portal and the app can show different promotional prices.

The catch: a 30-day trial, no refunds and timed remote viewing

New users get a 30-day trial that converts to a paid plan unless cancelled first, and TP-Link treats Tapo Care as prepaid: cancelling stops renewal but refunds nothing. After a plan ends, cloud clips stay viewable for 14 days, with downloads capped at 200 clips, and are then deleted permanently. A plan is tied to one TP-Link ID and cannot move to another account, and old Kasa Care footage cannot be opened in this app at all. Away from the home network, remote live view pauses for a Continue prompt, and shared users get 10 minutes per session. A camera can be shared with five accounts, but they cannot open its cloud recordings. And 14 of the 571 Play reviews from 2026 we read complain about promotions or upsell pop-ups, two of them with the Promotions toggle already off.

Privacy Mode, AES-128 and the 2026 Tapo C200 advisories

TP-Link says camera video and account data are protected with AES-128 encryption and TLS 1.2, two-step verification is available for the TP-Link ID, Privacy Mode blocks the lens, and Privacy Zones mask areas such as a bed. Google Play's Data safety form reports no data shared with third parties; collected items include name, email, optional precise location and optional photos. The US privacy policy, updated January 23, 2026, says Tapo Care clips are uploaded to AWS, Aireal keeps face data and video summaries for 14 days after the plan ends, and non-identifying data may go to advertising providers for personalized ads. Firmware still needs patching: TP-Link's 2026 advisories CVE-2026-1871 and CVE-2026-12760 cover Tapo C200 flaws that let someone on the local network crash or destabilize the camera, both rated 7.1 and both fixed in firmware.

Pros

  • Records to microSD cards up to 512 GB with no subscription
  • Cloud Advanced covers unlimited cameras with 180 days for $11.99 monthly
  • Controls most Kasa devices too, except the KE100 and KE110
  • Matter plugs keep working over local Wi-Fi when the internet drops
  • Links to Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, SmartThings and IFTTT
  • Privacy Mode blocks the lens, and Privacy Zones mask chosen areas

Cons

  • Promotions for TP-Link products appear on the home tab, per 2026 reviews
  • Remote live view pauses for a Continue prompt; shared users get 10 minutes
  • Tapo Care is prepaid with no refunds, and the free trial auto-renews
  • Moving cameras to a new Wi-Fi network requires resetting each one

Verdict

We score TP-Link Tapo 7.4. It earns points for free microSD recording, one app for Tapo and most Kasa devices, Matter plugs that keep running without internet, and $11.99 a month for cloud history on every camera in a home. It loses points for home-tab promotions, timed remote viewing, a no-refund subscription and 2026 complaints about missed alerts. Take it for affordable cameras with local storage. Skip it if you need uninterrupted remote live view.

Core function8.5One app runs Tapo and most Kasa devices, with free microSD recording and person detection on supported cameras.
Ease of use7.0Bluetooth setup and widgets help, but a Wi-Fi change needs a camera reset and SD downloads need home Wi-Fi.
Monetisation7.0Local recording is free and Cloud starts at $3.49, but plans are non-refundable and the app pushes promotions.
Performance6.5Of 571 Play reviews from 2026, 105 gave one or two stars, many citing missed alerts or lag after updates.
Privacy & permissions7.0AES-128, two-step verification and Privacy Mode, but the policy allows personalized ads and the AI tier stores face data.

Frequently asked questions

1

Do Tapo cameras work without a subscription?

Yes. Live view, activity notifications and recording to a microSD card of up to 512 GB, sold separately, need no plan, and person detection runs on supported models. Tapo Care adds cloud history, snapshot notifications and, on the top tier, AI summaries and facial recognition. The Tapo H500 hub stores footage from up to 16 cameras with no monthly fee.

2

Does Tapo work with Alexa, Google Home and Matter?

Yes. The app links to Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri, SmartThings and IFTTT, and cameras can stream to an Echo Show, Fire TV or Chromecast, though Google streams stop after five minutes. Matter-certified plugs such as the Tapo P125M can be added from the Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home app and keep running locally without internet. Camera HomeKit support covers select models only.

3

How much is Tapo Care per month?

In the US, Cloud is $3.49 a month per camera for up to two cameras, with 30 days of history. Cloud Advanced is $11.99 a month for unlimited cameras and 180 days, and Cloud Advanced AI is $19.99 a month. New users get 30 days free. Prices are regional and may change.

4

What happens to my clips if I cancel Tapo Care?

Cancelling turns off auto-renewal, so the plan runs to the end of the paid period and no refund is issued. After it expires you have 14 days to view the cloud clips and download up to 200 of them, then TP-Link deletes them permanently. Recording to a microSD card keeps working without a plan.

5

Is Tapo Care cheaper than Wyze Cam Plus?

Not for a single camera: on the US App Store, Wyze lists Cam Plus at $2.99 a month for one device, against $3.49 for Tapo Cloud. For a whole home Tapo is lower, $11.99 a month for Cloud Advanced versus $12.99 for Wyze's unlimited plan. Tuya's Smart Life app sells a 30-day storage plan at $9.99 a month. Prices may change.
