Pinterest is the best lifestyle app for running a home: it is free, sells ordinary users nothing, and turns a photo or a phrase into a board of ideas that link back to the recipe or shop behind them. We ranked seven apps from our catalogue that plan projects, run a smart home, map the family and connect the street, on what each does for free and what it costs in money and data. TP-Link Tapo is the smart-home pick, because its cameras need no subscription. Prices are as of October 2026.

How we picked

Lifestyle is the store's widest shelf, so we narrowed it to the apps that run a household: planning projects, keeping a smart home working, knowing where the family is, and hearing what is happening on your street. Seven apps from our catalogue fit, and we ranked them on what the free version does, what the paid tier adds, and what each one does with your data. Prices are as of October 2026 and come from each company's pages and store listings.

Wardrobe apps such as Whering are in our style and interior ranking, and talk-first assistants such as Pi in our AI chat ranking.

1. Pinterest — the planning app that sells you nothing

Pinterest wins because it is useful for almost any project at home, from a kitchen layout to a week of dinners, and it costs nothing. It works as a visual search engine: type a phrase or point the camera at an object, save what you find to boards, and each pin links back to the recipe or shop behind the picture.

Ordinary users are never sold anything inside it. The price is data: Apple's privacy label lists cross-app tracking and the hand data used by the try-on tools, and five data categories go to third parties. Switch the camera features off if that matters to you. Our score: 7.4.

TP-Link Tapo controls Tapo cameras, doorbells, plugs and bulbs and most older Kasa devices from one app. The cameras record to a microSD card of up to 512 GB, around the clock on wired models, so you never have to pay for history.

If you want cloud history anyway, Tapo Care starts at $3.49 a month per camera, or $11.99 a month for every camera in the home. Matter plugs keep running without an internet connection. The app now shows TP-Link promotions on the home tab, and remote live view is timed. Our score: 7.4.

3. Life360 — the family map

Life360 puts the whole family on one live map, with alerts when someone arrives at or leaves a saved place and a driving report that shows speed, phone use and hard braking per trip. Basic location sharing is free, along with a check-in button and an SOS that alerts the whole circle; free accounts get a limited number of saved places, while unlimited alerts and 30 days of location history sit behind the paid tiers.

Those tiers cost $7.99, $14.99 and $24.99 a month, the free tier carries ads, and the data label says location and health information are shared with third parties. Whether that is reassurance or surveillance is a decision for each household. Our score: 7.1.

4. Amazon Alexa — the hub for Echo homes

Amazon Alexa sets up Echo speakers, runs Matter and Zigbee devices, builds routines and plays music across rooms. Since February 2026 it also opens Alexa+, the AI assistant, which is included with Prime and costs $19.99 a month without it.

Every voice request is recorded and processed in Amazon's cloud; the settings only decide how long recordings are kept. The Android install is 713 MB, and sponsored cards on Echo Show can be hidden but not switched off. Our score: 6.8.

5. LG ThinQ — for LG appliances only

LG ThinQ is free and asks for no subscription: it runs LG washers, dryers, fridges, ovens, air conditioners and webOS TVs, books repairs, and downloads new appliance features through ThinQ UP. Smart Diagnosis reads an error from the machine itself.

Appliances pair over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, an LG account is mandatory, remote start has to be armed at the machine, and dropped connections lead recent complaints. Other brands' Matter devices work only through an LG hub such as a compatible TV. Our score: 6.8.

6. Tuya — one remote for thousands of cheap brands

Tuya is the app behind thousands of budget brands, across more than 3,000 product categories. If a plug, bulb or camera box says Tuya or Smart Life, this app runs it, and pairing, scenes, automations, Matter and Alexa or Google linking are free.

The 2026 updates added banner ads and a Hey Tuya AI bar to the home screen of what is essentially a remote control, and camera history beyond the device's own storage needs a paid cloud plan. Our score: 6.4.

7. Nextdoor — your street, verified

Nextdoor is the only app here that checks where you live: you join one neighborhood by text code, home location or a recent document, under your real name, while your street stays hidden from other users. It is the place for outage alerts, local swaps and recommendations.

Mapped Alerts show nearby incidents on a map rather than in the feed, which makes them easier to check during a storm or a power cut. The feed itself reaches 2.5 to 4 miles beyond your own area with no saved filter, and the help center says sponsored posts cannot be hidden. Our score: 6.2.

Which smart-home app you actually need

Pick by the devices you own, not by the app. Echo speakers mean Alexa; LG appliances mean ThinQ; cheap plugs and bulbs from many brands usually mean Tuya; Tapo cameras mean Tapo. Matter lets one app control another maker's device, but each still needs its own hub, so most homes keep two of these apps rather than one.

Bottom line

Install Pinterest first: it is free, sells nothing and helps with almost every household project. For a smart home, let your devices decide, and choose Tapo if you are still buying cameras, because local recording means no monthly fee. Add Life360 only if the whole family agrees to share a map.
