Epic switched Fortnitemares on across Battle Royale, Horde Rush and Reload on October 1. A new point of interest, Nightmare Neighborhood, has Freddy Krueger standing in it as a boss, and beating him hands over Freddy's Nightmare — a weapon that teleports you into range and slashes. The rest of the horror roster arrives in pieces all month.
What was announced
Epic published the details on Fortnite's own news page on October 1. The framing is corruption spreading across three modes at once, with new characters landing all month from Five Nights at Freddy's, Hazbin Hotel, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Beetlejuice and Obsession.
The map carries the event. Nightmare Neighborhood is new, Freaky Fields is back, and Freddy Krueger waits in the neighbourhood as something you fight rather than something you buy. Defeat him and he drops Freddy's Nightmare, which closes the distance by teleport and slashes whoever is standing there.
The loot pool shifted with it. The Bonerattler SMG reveals enemies it hits, and two seasonal weapons return: the Wood Stake Shotgun and the Pumpkin Launcher. Cursed cartridge Overrides sit on top — one grants invisibility while sprinting, another boosts damage at low health, a third disguises a whole squad as Halloween props.
The Five Nights at Freddy's side kept its own mechanic. Animatronic bosses roam the island, and taking one down lets you possess it and play the rest of the fight as the thing that was hunting you.
What it means for players
This is a layer over the modes people already play in Fortnite, not a separate playlist to queue into. Horde Rush returned as a limited-time mode, and Epic said an updated Nitemare Island arrives in Reload on October 8 next to the Stranger Things and Squid Grounds maps.
The Overrides are the part that changes decisions rather than scenery. Invisibility while sprinting rewards rotating early, the low-health damage boost rewards staying in a fight that would normally be a reset, and prop disguise turns a squad into furniture while a storm closes. Those are loadout choices, not cosmetics.
The cosmetics are a separate queue. Five Nights at Freddy's outfits are in the Shop now and show battle damage as a match goes on. Through October, Epic lists outfits and accessories from A Nightmare on Elm Street, Black Clover, Hollow Knight, 99 Nights in the Forest, Hazbin Hotel, The Purge, Obsession, Slender Man, Beetlejuice, Predator: Badlands and Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights.
What happens next
The next dated step is October 8 and the Nitemare Island update in Reload. After that the schedule is a drip of outfits rather than map changes, with the rest of the crossover roster arriving through the month.
Epic has not announced an end date for Fortnitemares, and the loot pool details, Sprites and power hours live in the companion Communities post rather than in the main article. What is fixed: the island is corrupted now, and Freddy Krueger is a boss on it rather than a skin in a tab.
