About LG ThinQ

LG ThinQ is the free control app for LG's Wi-Fi washers, dryers, refrigerators, ovens, air conditioners and webOS TVs, and it is also where Smart Diagnosis, ThinQ UP feature downloads and repair bookings live. It can add Matter devices from other brands, but needs an LG hub, such as a compatible TV, to run them. The catch is setup: appliances pair over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, an LG account is mandatory, and dropped connections dominate recent complaints.

LG ThinQ Review: The Only Full Remote for LG Appliances, and a Fragile One

2.4 GHz only, 10 meters: why ThinQ often won't connect

Every connected LG appliance registers over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. LG's US setup guide says to pick a network without 5G or 5GHz in its name, keep the router within 10 meters of the appliance and switch off mobile data on the phone while pairing. Routers that broadcast both bands under one name are a common trip-up: one Play reviewer in September 2026 had to type the network name by hand to re-register a direct-drive washer. Location access is requested to find Wi-Fi networks during registration, and the Play permission list also names home location, weather and location-based Smart Routines. Of the 150 newest English Google Play reviews, posted September 23 to October 1, 2026, 70 gave one or two stars. By our count, 19 of those describe devices that would not pair, dropped offline or vanished after an update, and six could not sign in.

Remote Control mode, Smart Diagnosis and ThinQ UP on the machines

On LG front-load washers, remote start needs a step at the machine: you first hold the Remote Control button on the machine for 3 seconds; the panel then locks except for Power and Remote Control, and only the app can start the cycle. Without that step the app shows the remaining time and can switch the washer off, nothing more. Smart Diagnosis checks a product's status and may use the phone's microphone to do it, and the Chat with LG assistant handles troubleshooting through to scheduling a repair. ThinQ UP, folded into the ThinQ PLAY menu in 2025, downloads new functions to appliances launched from 2022 onward, such as a dry-only dishwasher cycle, a pet-hair care cycle and custom end-of-cycle melodies. For LG TVs the app doubles as a remote, and sets on webOS 3.5 or later can be switched on from the phone; older ones only switch off.

Matter through an LG hub, plus Alexa, Google and Samsung links

ThinQ can add Matter-certified devices from other brands by scanning their QR code or typing the setup code. LG's instructions for using a TV as that hub add three conditions: the TV must support the hub feature, the Matter device and TV must share a network and a home in the app, and both must use the same LG account. Without an LG hub there is no Matter control in the app. The LG ThinQ skill for Amazon Alexa covers nine product types, from washers and ranges to robot cleaners and webOS TVs, though LG says only basic features are supported on Alexa speakers, and LG's US site says ovens and ranges also answer to Google Assistant. In August 2023 LG announced that ThinQ would control Samsung and Vestel washers, dryers and dishwashers through the Home Connectivity Alliance, naming the US among the target markets.

What LG collects: sensor data, an 18+ policy and ad-partner sharing

LG's US privacy policy, effective April 29, 2026, covers the app, the ThinQ ON hub and connected appliances. Through the app LG may collect each device's operating status, settings, software version, sensor readings and location. The policy says LG does not sell data for money, yet it may share contact, demographic, device and online-activity data with advertising partners, which state laws can treat as sharing; opt-outs go through a web form or the Global Privacy Control signal. Voice recordings from voice-enabled products may be kept for one year. Apple's label lists identifiers used to track you, and the Google Play form lists eight data types shared with third parties for analytics, including location and voice recordings. The policy also says the services are meant for adults 18 and older, while both stores rate the app suitable for all ages.

Verdict

We score LG ThinQ 6.8. It earns that as the free, subscription-free hub for LG washers, ovens, air conditioners and webOS TVs, with ThinQ UP downloads, Smart Diagnosis and a Matter path through an LG hub. Points come off for 2.4 GHz-only pairing, a remote start that must be armed at the machine, frequent connection complaints and broad ad-partner sharing in the privacy policy. Take it if you own LG appliances or an LG TV. Skip it if your home runs mostly on other brands, where SmartThings, Google Home or Alexa fit better.

Core function7.5Controls LG appliances and webOS TVs and adds Matter via an LG hub, but remote start needs arming at the washer.
Ease of use6.0A mandatory LG account, location access during setup and 2.4 GHz-only pairing make first setup the hardest part.
Monetisation8.5Free with no subscription; ads sit in LG Channels streaming, and the iPhone version lists no in-app purchases.
Performance6.0Rated 4.4 on Google Play, yet 70 of the 150 newest English reviews gave one or two stars.
Privacy & permissions5.0Collects appliance sensor data and location, and device and activity data may go to advertising partners.

Frequently asked questions

1

Why won't LG ThinQ connect to my washer or TV?

Usually because of the network. LG appliances pair only over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so choose a network without 5G in its name, keep the router within 10 meters and turn off mobile data while pairing. For a TV, the phone and TV must be on the same network, and switching the TV on from the app needs webOS 3.5 or later with Turn on via Wi-Fi enabled.

2

Can I start my LG washer remotely with ThinQ?

Yes, but only after you arm it at the machine. On LG front-load washers, hold Remote Control for 3 seconds; the panel then locks except for Power and Remote Control, and the cycle starts from the app. Without that mode the app only shows the remaining time and can turn the washer off. Restarting the washer or holding the button again cancels the mode.

3

Does the LG ThinQ app cost anything?

No. The app is free with no subscription, and the US App Store lists no in-app purchases, although Google Play shows an in-app purchases badge. Apple notes that it contains advertising: the app carries LG Channels, LG's free ad-supported streaming service. ThinQ Rewards points for using the app convert to gift cards, and select appliances bought by December 31, 2026 and connected in the app get a two-year limited warranty; terms apply.

4

Can I use an LG appliance without the ThinQ app?

Yes. Out of Remote Control mode the machine works from its own panel, so the app is optional for washing, drying or cooking. Without it you lose remote start, cycle alerts, Smart Diagnosis, ThinQ UP downloads and Alexa or Google voice control. Setting the app up requires an LG account, and under LG's US privacy policy you can ask for your data to be deleted through its privacy portal or at 800-243-0000.

5

Is LG ThinQ better than SmartThings or Google Home?

For LG products, yes, because only ThinQ reaches LG-specific functions such as ThinQ UP downloads and Smart Diagnosis. Samsung SmartThings plays the same role for Samsung appliances, and LG announced a cross-brand link between the two through the Home Connectivity Alliance in 2023. Google Home and Amazon Alexa control LG devices through account linking, and LG says Alexa speakers support only basic features.
