About Swagbucks: Surveys for Money

Swagbucks pays in points for small tasks: answering surveys, playing games to a level target, scanning grocery receipts and shopping through its links. Points convert at a fixed rate — 100 SB is one dollar — and cash out as gift cards or PayPal from 300 SB. Prodege has run it for years and Google Play records more than ten million installs, with advertising throughout.

Swagbucks Review: 100 Points Make One Dollar

300 SB Is the Smallest Cash-Out

The arithmetic is public and worth knowing before starting. One hundred points equal a dollar; the minimum redemption is 300 points, which is three dollars; a $25 Amazon gift card costs 2,500 points, while $25 to PayPal costs 2,530 — cash carries a small premium over store credit. Nothing expires as long as the account stays active, and the rate does not change with volume, so there is no threshold at which the return improves. What varies is how many points a task pays, not what a point is worth.

Surveys, Game Levels and Receipt Scanning

Four earning routes sit in the app. Surveys pay a stated amount before you start, though screening questions can end one after several minutes with nothing. Games pay at level milestones — reaching level 5, 10 and 15 in a partner title each unlock a fixed reward, shown as a progress bar. Receipt scanning gives cash back on named grocery items from chains including Kroger, Costco, Publix and Whole Foods. Shopping through the app's links returns a percentage from the retailer. The first and third are the reliable ones.

Everything Collected Is Also Shared

This is the trade being made. Google Play lists five collected categories — location, personal information and three others — and lists all five as shared with third parties, which is unusual even among free apps: most share a subset. The listing also carries a Contains ads badge, and Apple's card notes tracking across other companies' apps. That is consistent with the business: the product being sold is consumer data and attention, and the points are what you are paid for supplying them. Google Play last recorded an update in August 2026, and the app has passed ten million Android installs despite the modest returns.

Pros

  • Fixed rate: 100 points always equal one dollar
  • Cash-outs start at 300 points, about three dollars
  • Receipt scanning pays on ordinary grocery shopping
  • Gift cards and PayPal cash both available as rewards
  • Points do not expire while the account stays active

Cons

  • All five collected data categories are shared with third parties
  • Surveys can end mid-way after screening, paying nothing
  • PayPal cash costs more points than an equivalent gift card
  • Advertising runs throughout an app that pays in pennies

Verdict

It works as advertised: points arrive, 100 of them make a dollar, and $3 can be withdrawn without a long wait. Judge it by the hourly rate, which is low, and by the privacy price, which is high — all five collected data categories are declared as shared with third parties. Reasonable as a way to turn grocery receipts into gift cards; not reasonable as anything resembling income.

Core function7.0Points do arrive and cash out, but hourly returns stay far below any wage.
Ease of use8.0Tasks are listed with payouts up front, and the redemption screen is unambiguous.
Monetisation6.5Free to use with ads; the economics favour the platform at 100 points to the dollar.
Performance7.5A light install; survey partners load in a web view, which is where slowdowns appear.
Privacy & permissions4.5Five collected categories, all shared with third parties, plus cross-app tracking.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Swagbucks free to use?

Yes, and it pays rather than charges — there are no in-app purchases at all. Advertising is present throughout, which the Play listing confirms with a Contains ads badge. The real cost is the data: everything the app collects is also declared as shared with third parties.

2

How do you earn points?

Four ways: surveys that state their payout in advance, games that pay at level milestones, receipt scanning for cash back on grocery items, and shopping through the app's retailer links. Surveys and receipts are the dependable pair; games take hours to reach a paying level.

3

How much is a Swagbuck worth?

100 SB equals one dollar. The smallest redemption is 300 SB, or three dollars, and a $25 Amazon gift card costs 2,500 SB. PayPal cash costs slightly more — 2,530 SB for the same $25 — so store credit is marginally the better rate.

4

Do points expire?

Not while the account stays active. Long inactivity is the risk with any rewards programme, so cashing out at the 300-point minimum rather than saving towards a large gift card is the safer habit — it also tests whether the redemption process works before a big balance depends on it.

5

What are the alternatives?

InboxDollars, run by the same parent company, works almost identically. Google Opinion Rewards pays less often but asks short questions and shares far less data. For grocery cash back alone, a dedicated receipt app avoids the surveys entirely.
