Best Lifestyle Apps for Home and Family, Ranked
Pinterest is the best lifestyle app for running a home: it is free, sells ordinary users nothing, and turns a photo or a phrase into a board of ideas
Tuya is a free control app for plugs, bulbs, cameras and appliances from the thousands of brands that build on Tuya's platform, which spans 3,000+ product categories. Pairing, scenes, automations, Matter and Alexa or Google linking cost nothing. The catch arrived with 2026 updates: banner ads and a Hey Tuya AI bar on the home screen, while camera history beyond the device's own storage needs a paid cloud plan.

Pairing, control, Tap-to-Run scenes and Automation rules are free. Tuya says setup usually takes 30 to 90 seconds, using Bluetooth-assisted Wi-Fi, a temporary access point, or a QR code for cameras. Rules can fire on a schedule, the weather, a sensor reading or another device's state, and location triggers need precise location, which the iPhone app may use while closed. Two limits stand out. Tuya's own explainer admits the engine cannot nest conditions such as A and (B or C), something Home Assistant handles. And the app is only the panel: Tuya has told reviewers that each device's functions are set by its manufacturer, so two plugs paired here can offer different settings.
Tuya's help center says Matter control in the app works on the local network only. Tuya-made Matter devices also sync with Tuya's cloud, so they still respond away from home, while other brands' Matter devices get a generic panel and stay local. A Matter device can be shared to another Matter app with its setup code. Everything else routes through Tuya's cloud; its explainer says local control without internet covers only select device types. Alexa account linking has worked app-to-app on Android since July 2020, and Google Assistant links too, but voice commands depend on the device maker: Tuya sells voice features to brands per product, across 400+ categories it lists as voice-ready.
Without a plan, camera clips are encrypted and kept on the device, Tuya's privacy policy says; cloud upload starts only after a purchase. The US App Store lists 7-day rolling storage at $3.19 a month, a 14-Day Storage Plan at $5.99, 30-day storage at $9.99 and 30-Day Smart Storage at $12.99, plus a 3-Device Basic Plan at $12.99, an AI Protect Pro plan at $2.99 a week and HeyTuya Yearly at $79. Tuya's business help center says the camera's brand gets a percentage of each payment. TP-Link Tapo publishes one price card instead: Tapo Cloud at $3.49 a month with 30 days of history. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.
The publisher, Tuya Smart Inc., gives a San Jose, California mailing address; its parent, Tuya Inc., is incorporated in the Cayman Islands and listed on the NYSE and in Hong Kong. US accounts are hosted in AWS's Oregon region by default, one of seven Tuya data centers that also include mainland China, Frankfurt and Singapore. Answering a 2021 letter from three US senators, Tuya said user data is isolated by region and no government had asked it for another country's data. The terms apply Delaware law and send disputes to arbitration in Singapore. The privacy policy dated September 20, 2026 describes banner ads fed with device IDs, IP address and approximate location; Google Play's form says nothing is shared.

We score Tuya 6.4. It covers far more brands than a single-maker app such as TP-Link Tapo, and pairing, scenes, automations and Matter cost nothing. It loses points for ads and an AI bar inside what is essentially a remote, for cloud dependence, and for a sprawl of camera plans. Install it if your plugs, bulbs or cameras name Tuya or Smart Life on the box. Skip it if you want local-only control or an app without ads.

The app is free but no longer ad-free. Banner ads arrived with the 7.10 updates in 2026, and Tuya's privacy policy offers only an opt-out from personalized ads, under Me > Settings > Privacy Settings > Ad Preferences & Permissions > Third-Party Ad Management. It describes no way to remove ads entirely, even though device control and automations cost nothing.
Yes. It adds Matter devices from any brand by QR or pairing code and controls them over your local network, with a generic panel for non-Tuya models. Alexa and Google Assistant connect through account linking, but voice commands only work for products whose makers enabled them for that assistant.
In the US App Store, camera plans run from $3.19 a month for 7-day rolling storage to $12.99 a month for 30-Day Smart Storage, with 30-day storage at $9.99. TP-Link Tapo's comparable Tapo Cloud tier is $3.49 a month for 30 days of history. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.
Only by pairing them again. Tuya says both apps are official and differ only in branding, but their data is separate: Tap-to-Run scenes and automations cannot be transferred, so every device must be removed and added again. On the same Wi-Fi, Matter devices are controlled locally; most others go through Tuya's cloud.
We can describe its practices, not certify it. US data is hosted in Oregon by default, and Tuya says regions are isolated. Apple's label lists usage data for tracking, and ad networks may receive device IDs and approximate location. A July 2026 Tuya advisory confirmed CVE-2025-56400, an Alexa-linking flaw rated 8.8 that affected version 6.3.1 and is fixed from 6.5.0.
