About Nextdoor: Neighborhood Network

Nextdoor is free for neighbors, and sponsored posts that the help center says cannot be hidden pay for it. What sets it apart is the address check: you join one neighborhood by text code, home location or a recent document, under your real name, while profiles never show your street. The main limitation is reach: the feed mixes in nearby neighborhoods 2.5 to 4 miles away, with no saved filter for your own.

Nextdoor Review: Verified Neighbors, but Ads and a Wide Feed You Can't Tune

Address check: SMS code, home location or a document under 6 months old

Joining starts with an email link, then a home address you rent, own, plan to build on or let out. Verification by text works only if your mobile plan's billing address matches it; geo-location works only while you are at home. Otherwise the help center accepts a government ID, deed, lease or utility bill dated within six months, and unverified accounts stay read-only. One account holds one residential address, so a second home needs a second account and email, and the address can change only once every 30 days. Neighbors never see your street or house number, only your neighborhood name, and you can shorten your surname to an initial. Two 2026 Play reviews describe sign-ups stuck at the location and phone steps.

Four feed filters and a 2.5–4 mile Nearby radius

The feed opens on For You, with Recent, Nearby and Trending, which ranks the past 7 days. The help center admits there is no way to save another default or limit the feed to a single neighborhood, and accounts may be auto-connected to nearby neighborhoods 2.5 to 4 miles out. Since the July 2025 redesign, Alerts from Samdesk and Weather.com sit on a neighborhood map; CEO Nirav Tolia told TechCrunch that a critical red alert takes over the whole app. News comes from about 3,500 partner publications, some of them paywalled. Faves and the newer Ask feature answer local questions with AI summaries drawn from past neighbor posts.

For Sale & Free: AI listing drafts and the August 2026 self-promotion rule

Listings need at least one photo, and the optional AI Assistant suggests a title, description, price and category from it. Personal items, homemade goods under Neighbor Made and casual services under Neighbor Services are allowed; business reselling, gift cards, duplicate listings, realtor listings and selling pets are not. There is no checkout: the help center points buyers to payment apps such as Venmo, PayPal, Zelle or Cash App. It also warns about below-market vehicles and electronics offered by sellers who ask for gift-card payment. Since August 19, 2026, anyone regularly promoting paid work must post from a free Business Page; personal accounts may offer babysitting or handmade goods once a month. At least 5 of 62 critical Play reviews from late September object to the change.

Volunteer moderators, unhideable sponsored posts and ad data

The Community Guidelines set five rules, including real names, no discrimination and moving national topics into Groups. Most reports go to volunteer Leads and Review Team members who vote on them; misinformation and discrimination reports go straight to staff, and a reporter's appeal goes to a different set of moderators. Sponsored ads, a revenue source since 2016, cannot be hidden or blocked. Google Play's Data safety form lists device IDs as shared for advertising and your address among data used for marketing, while Apple's label says contact info and identifiers may be used to track you. The privacy policy, effective January 1, 2026, lets hashed emails reach ad partners; residents of 19 states can opt out in Settings.

Pros

  • Profiles never show your street name or house number to neighbors
  • Verification by SMS, home location or a document dated within six months
  • Live Alerts from Samdesk and Weather.com appear on a neighborhood map
  • AI Assistant drafts a listing title, price and category from one photo
  • Name, photo and profile visibility each go down to No one

Cons

  • The help center confirms sponsored ads cannot be hidden or blocked
  • No saved feed filter, and nearby neighborhoods reach 2.5 to 4 miles out
  • Device IDs are shared for advertising, and Apple's label lists cross-app tracking
  • Dozens of notification categories, and reviewers report new ones arriving switched on

Verdict

We scored it 6.2. The address check, hidden street details and mapped Alerts carry the core score; sponsored ads that cannot be hidden, a feed that reaches 2.5 to 4 miles out with no saved filter, and address data used for advertising pull it down. Take it for outage alerts, local swaps and recommendations from verified residents. Skip it if you want an ad-light feed limited to your own streets, or sell services without wanting a Business Page.

Core function7.5Address-verified neighborhoods, mapped Alerts and For Sale listings deliver; control over feed reach is the weak point.
Ease of use5.5The feed always opens on For You with no saved filter, and notification settings run to dozens of categories.
Monetisation5.5Free with no in-app purchases, but sponsored ads cannot be hidden and reviewers report ads playing sound.
Performance6.0Updates ship almost weekly, yet September 2026 reviews report load failures, message lag and battery drain.
Privacy & permissions5.5Street and house number stay hidden from neighbors, but address data and device IDs feed advertising.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Nextdoor free?

Yes. Neighbors pay nothing, and neither Google Play nor the App Store lists in-app purchases. Advertising has funded the service since 2016, and sponsored ads cannot be hidden. Businesses pay only for optional products such as Opportunity Alerts and Nextdoor Ads.

2

Can neighbors see my address on Nextdoor?

No. The help center says profiles never show street names or house numbers, and your full address is visible only to you; others see your neighborhood name. Exceptions come from you: a location added to a post, such as a pickup spot for a For Sale item, or a post set to Anyone, which the privacy policy says can reach visitors and search engines.

3

Does Nextdoor charge businesses to post?

No. A Business Page and its posts are free, and since August 19, 2026, anyone regularly promoting paid work must use one instead of a personal account. Opportunity Alerts, a monthly subscription that sends neighbor requests from within 20 miles in up to 3 service categories, costs extra; its product page lists no price.

4

How do I delete my Nextdoor account?

Open Settings, then Account settings, then Deactivate your account, and pick a reason. The next screen offers deactivation, which you can undo and which removes your profile picture and hometown, or a click-here link to deletion, which is irreversible and removes all your posts, comments and profile information.

5

What is a good alternative to Nextdoor?

Facebook is the closest substitute for local questions and selling: Groups and Marketplace reach a far larger audience without a home-address check, and Marketplace takes a cut only on shipped sales. NewsBreak suits readers who mainly want local news, with a feed built around chosen ZIP codes and a Crime Map, though reviewers complain about its ads too.
