About Amazon Shopping

The Amazon app is the shop plus everything the company has bolted onto it: groceries, pharmacy, One Medical, in-store codes, Alexa voice search and a camera that identifies a product from its packaging. Ordering, tracking and returns all run from one account. It is free and ad-supported, and the Prime membership behind it costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year.

Amazon Review: The Camera Finds What You Cannot Name

Amazon Lens Identifies a Product From the Packaging

Point the camera at a container of disinfecting wipes and the app matches it to the exact listing, ready to reorder — no typing a brand name or guessing a size. A second mode, Shop the Look, does the same for clothing in a photograph. This is the feature that turns the app into a reordering tool for household consumables, and it works better than search does for anything whose name you have never actually read. Both modes sit behind the camera icon in the search bar rather than in a separate menu, which is why most people never find them.

Alexa, Groceries and Pharmacy in the Same App

Voice search runs through Alexa, with a wake word that can be switched off in settings, and the category chips along the top now include Groceries, Pharmacy, One Medical and In-Store codes. That breadth is why the app is on so many phones and why it is harder to navigate than a plain shop: prescription refills, same-day grocery orders and a smart-home store all live behind the same search box. Product pages carry the usual depth of specifications, questions and reviews. Delivery estimates appear per item rather than per order, so a basket of several things can arrive across three different days.

Six Data Categories Shared, Including Financial

Google Play lists eleven collected categories and six shared with third parties, financial information among them, and the listing carries a Contains ads badge — sponsored products appear throughout search results and on product pages. Prime costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year and covers delivery, video and music. The store ratings are strong: 4.8 on the App Store from 8.4 million ratings against 4.4 across 4.68 million Play reviews. The gap between the two store scores is unusually wide for an app this established, and the Android complaints centre on the interface rather than the service.

Pros

  • Camera identifies a product from its packaging
  • Groceries, pharmacy and in-store codes in one app
  • Alexa voice search with a wake word you can disable
  • Order tracking and returns handled from the same account
  • Rated 4.8 on the App Store across 8.4 million ratings

Cons

  • Six data categories shared onward, including financial information
  • Sponsored products appear throughout the search results
  • Eleven collected data categories in total on the listing
  • The interface is crowded with services beyond shopping

Verdict

Still the most capable shopping app, and Amazon Lens is the underrated part — identifying a product from its packaging removes the worst step in reordering. What to weigh is everything around the shop: sponsored results throughout, eleven data categories with six shared onward including financial information, and a Prime membership whose video half now costs extra to watch without advertising.

Core function9.0Search, ordering, tracking and returns work at a scale nothing else matches.
Ease of use7.5Crowded: groceries, pharmacy, medical and store codes all compete on one screen.
Monetisation7.0Free to use, sponsored results throughout, and Prime at $14.99 monthly behind it.
Performance7.5A moderate install that loads quickly, though product pages are long and image-heavy.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Amazon app free?

Yes, and it works without a Prime membership — browsing, ordering, tracking and returns are all free. The Play listing carries a Contains ads badge because sponsored products appear in results. Prime, at $14.99 a month or $139 a year, buys faster delivery and the video and music services.

2

What does the camera do?

Amazon Lens matches a product from its packaging to the exact listing, which makes reordering household items a two-second job. A separate Shop the Look mode finds clothing from a photograph. Both are faster than describing an item in the search box.

3

How much is Prime?

$14.99 a month or $139 a year, covering free delivery on eligible items, Prime Video and Amazon Music. Prime Video within it now carries advertising unless you add Prime Video Ultra at $4.99 a month, which is a separate charge from the membership.

4

Can you turn off Alexa in the app?

Yes — the wake word that lets you start shopping by saying Alexa can be switched off in the app's Alexa settings, leaving the microphone button as a manual option. Worth doing if you would rather the app not listen for a trigger while open.

5

What are the alternatives?

Walmart matches it on groceries and beats it in-store with Scan & Go. Temu undercuts it on price with far slower delivery. For breadth of catalogue and speed of delivery together, this one still has no real competitor in most of the US.
