About Depop - Buy & Sell Clothes

Depop is a secondhand fashion marketplace aimed at a younger, more curated crowd than the general resale sites. Selling costs nothing in the US, UK and Australia — buyers pay a marketplace fee instead — and the listing tool now drafts a description with AI from the photos. Sellers get a stats screen showing views, clicks and what paid boosting actually did.

Depop Review: No Selling Fees, but Boosting Costs

Zero Selling Fees, With Two Exceptions

Depop removed selling fees in the US, UK and Australia, and the app's own promotional screen states the exceptions plainly: payment processing fees and boosting fees still apply. Buyers carry the platform's cut instead, as a marketplace fee of up to 5% of the item price plus up to $1, shown at checkout. That structure matches Vinted's almost exactly, which is what makes the choice between them about audience rather than economics. Both platforms therefore charge the buyer rather than the seller, which is a recent reversal of how resale apps used to work.

The Listing Tool Writes the Description

Photograph an item and the app drafts the text: the store screenshots show it producing a description of Levi's straight-leg 501s with hashtags attached, offered as a Use description button next to a shuffle for alternatives. For a marketplace where listings live or die on searchable keywords, that removes the step most casual sellers do badly. Everything else in the sell flow is standard — photos, category, condition, price — and the whole listing takes a couple of minutes. Photos matter more here than on general marketplaces, and the app pushes photo tips before publishing rather than afterwards.

Shop Stats Show What Boosting Bought

The seller dashboard reports revenue and sales over six months, then breaks out boosting separately: views and clicks for the period, and per-listing figures such as 1,200 views with a hundred per cent increase attributed to the boost. That is more honest reporting than most marketplaces provide, because it makes the paid promotion measurable rather than assumed. Google Play lists eight collected categories with personal information, messages and three others shared with third parties. The App Store rating is 4.8 across 986,000 ratings, and the Play score matches it, which is rare for a marketplace app.

Verdict

The best-presented resale app here, and the AI description genuinely improves listings from people who would otherwise write two words and a price. The fee structure is honest as long as you read past the headline: no selling fees, but payment processing and any boosting come out of the same sale. Buyers should note the marketplace fee of up to 5% plus $1 before comparing prices with rivals.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is selling on Depop free?

There are no selling fees in the US, UK and Australia, which the company announced when it changed its fee structure. Two costs remain: payment processing on each sale, and optional boosting if you pay to promote a listing. Buyers pay a marketplace fee of up to 5% plus $1.

2

What does the AI listing tool do?

It reads the photos and drafts a description with relevant hashtags — brand, cut, wash, condition — which you can accept, shuffle for an alternative or rewrite. Since search on a resale app depends on keywords, it usually produces a more findable listing than a casual seller writes.

3

What does boosting cost?

Boosting is a paid promotion applied per listing, and the Shop Stats screen reports what it delivered — views, clicks and the percentage increase attributable to it. Prices vary by listing value, and the app shows the fee before you confirm, which makes the spend measurable rather than blind.

4

How does an order progress?

The purchase screen tracks three stages — purchased, shipped, delivered — with a date on delivery, then prompts both sides to leave feedback. Ratings accumulate on the profile, and they are what buyers read before deciding whether to trust a seller with an expensive item.

5

What are the alternatives?

Vinted runs almost the same fee structure with a broader, less curated audience. eBay charges sellers instead and reaches people outside fashion entirely. This one is the choice when the clothes are distinctive enough that presentation matters.
