About Walmart: Shopping & Savings

The Walmart app does two jobs: online ordering from a catalogue the company describes as more than half a billion items, and an in-store mode with a shop map, Scan & Go checkout, price checks and fuel payments. Walmart+ costs $98 a year and folds in free delivery plus a choice of Peacock or Paramount+. The app is free and carries advertising in its listings.

Walmart Review: Scan & Go Beats the Checkout Queue

In-Store Mode Turns the Phone Into a Trolley

Walking into a branch switches the app to a store screen: Scan & Go for scanning items as you shop and paying without a checkout, a store map that locates a product by aisle, a shopping list, price checks by barcode and a fuel payment button for the forecourt. Manufacturer offers sit underneath — a dollar off mouthwash, two off detergent — claimed in the app and applied at the till. For a weekly shop, that combination saves more time than the delivery half of the product. Walmart Pay closes the loop: a QR code at the till draws on a saved card and any Walmart Cash balance in the account.

Walmart+ Costs $98 a Year and Includes Streaming

The membership is $98 annually or a monthly equivalent, with free delivery on qualifying orders, fuel discounts, Scan & Go, early access to deals, free pharmacy delivery and a streaming subscription — a choice of Peacock or Paramount+ — included. Students and people receiving government assistance pay $49 a year. Walmart states members save an average of $380 a year, which is a company figure rather than an independent one, but the streaming inclusion alone covers a third of the price. Membership is bought on the website or in the app, and it can be paused between months rather than only cancelled outright.

Express Delivery in an Hour, With Conditions

Delivery in as little as one hour is the headline, and the small print in the store screenshots is worth reading: the free first express order needs a $50 minimum and a promotional code, and availability depends on the branch. Google Play lists seven collected categories with personal information and device identifiers shared with third parties, and the listing carries a Contains ads badge — sponsored products appear inside search results, as they do on every large marketplace now. The App Store rating of 4.8 across 18.3 million ratings is the largest positive sample of any shopping app reviewed here.

  • Rated 4.8 on the App Store across 18.3 million ratings

Cons

  • Sponsored products appear inside search results
  • Express delivery has minimums and branch restrictions
  • Seven collected data categories, two shared onward
  • One of the heavier shopping installs on a phone

Verdict

Better as a store companion than as a shopping site: Scan & Go, the aisle map and claimable manufacturer offers change how a weekly shop actually goes, and the app switches to that mode automatically when you arrive. The $98 membership pays for itself only if you use delivery regularly or watch the included streaming. Note the sponsored listings, which sit inside search results without much distinction.

Core function8.5Ordering, in-store scanning, maps and pharmacy all work in one app reliably.
Ease of use8.0The store mode appears automatically in a branch; online and in-store views stay distinct.
Monetisation7.5Free to use with sponsored listings; the $98 membership is optional and bundles streaming.
Performance7.0A large install, and image-heavy category pages load slowly on weak connections.
Privacy & permissions6.0Seven collected categories, with personal information and identifiers shared onward.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Walmart app free?

Yes, with no in-app purchases. It is funded by the shopping itself and by sponsored placements — the Play listing carries a Contains ads badge. Walmart+ is optional, at $98 a year, and everything else in the app works without it.

2

What is Scan & Go?

Scanning items with the phone as you put them in the trolley, then paying in the app and walking out without queuing at a till. It works in participating stores and pairs with the store map, which locates a product by aisle rather than by department.

3

What does Walmart+ include?

Free delivery on qualifying orders, fuel discounts, Scan & Go, early deal access, free pharmacy delivery and a streaming subscription — Peacock or Paramount+ — for $98 a year. Students and people on government assistance pay $49. Walmart says members save an average of $380 annually.

4

How fast is express delivery?

As little as an hour where the branch supports it. The first free express order requires a $50 minimum and a promotional code, and availability varies by location, so treat the one-hour claim as a best case rather than a standard.

5

What are the alternatives?

Amazon delivers a wider catalogue faster in most places but has no physical store to collect from. Target's app covers the same in-store tricks for a smaller chain. This one wins where a Walmart is nearby, because the store features are the real product.
