About Bumble Dating App: Meet & Date

Since August 2026, anyone in a Bumble match can send the first message, ending the women-first rule the app launched with in 2014, and both people get 72 hours to start a chat instead of 24. Swiping, matching, messaging and video calls stay free. The main limit is the paywall: people who already liked you stay blurred until you pay for Premium or one-off access.

Bumble Review: Anyone Can Open the Chat Now, but Your Likes Stay Locked

Free Tier: Swipes, Matches and the New 72-Hour Clock

A free account can swipe, match, message and video chat, and Snooze Mode hides you without deleting existing matches. Since August 11, 2026, either person can send the opener within 72 hours, and the other then has 72 more hours to reply before the match expires; under the old rule only women could open in opposite-gender matches, on a 24-hour clock. The paid line starts at the Liked You list: admirers stay blurred until you buy Premium or one-off access, though a developer reply on Google Play says they still appear in your regular deck if they fit your filters. Extend, Rematch and Backtrack sit in Boost, the cheapest plan.

Anyone Messages First: What Replaced Opening Moves

The company said 66% of women it surveyed preferred men to send the first message. The app now flags bare openers such as "hi" or "hey" and suggests something more personal, but still sends them. Opening Moves, the 2024 compromise that let women pin a question for matches to answer, is gone according to September 2026 Play reviews, which also say fewer matches write at all. A Really Into You tab, added in September 2026 updates, groups people who spent longer on your profile or sent a SuperSwipe or Note. In May 2026, CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd said swiping will be replaced in a redesign due in the fourth quarter.

Boost, Premium and Premium+: What $2.99 to $32.99 Buys

Boost covers unlimited swipes, Extend, Rematch, Backtrack, five SuperSwipes and one 30-minute Spotlight a week. Premium adds the Liked You list, Advanced Filters, Incognito Mode and Travel Mode; Premium+ raises SuperSwipes to 10 a week and adds profile insights. The US App Store lists Premium at $17.99, $19.99 and $32.99 and Boost from $2.99 to $12.99 without naming plan lengths, and the terms say promotional rates vary by region, subscription length and bundle size. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region. Purchases are non-refundable except where local law adds a window, such as three business days in 12 US states, and the terms rule out refunds for blocked members.

ID Verification, Face Scans and Six-Year Data Retention

ID verification, rolled out from March 2025, asks for a government ID and a selfie that Veriff, a third party, compares and keeps for up to 72 hours. Face scans from photo verification are held up to three years after your last interaction. Deleting an account clears most profile data within 28 days, but location coordinates, email, phone, name and birthday stay for six years. Apple's label lists location, contact info, identifiers and usage data as usable for cross-app tracking, and Google Play's form lists sexual orientation as collected. A $40 million Illinois settlement over facial scans of Bumble and Badoo users from 2016 to 2021 included a pledge to delete that biometric data.

Pros

  • Anyone in a match can send the opener, with 72-hour windows
  • Swiping, matching, messaging and video calls cost nothing on a free account
  • Optional ID verification through Veriff adds a badge and a verified-only filter
  • Snooze Mode hides your profile while keeping every existing match
  • Deception Detector blocked 95% of spam and scam accounts in 2024 tests

Cons

  • Seeing who already liked you requires Premium or a one-off purchase
  • App Store lists Premium at $17.99 to $32.99 without stating plan lengths
  • Name, phone, email and birthday are kept six years after account deletion
  • Recent reviews report bans after payment; the terms deny refunds to blocked members

Verdict

Bumble earns 6.4 because the free tier still covers matching, chatting and video calls, the 72-hour rule lets either person start, and ID verification is there for anyone who wants a badge. Blurred admirers, unlisted plan lengths and long data retention pull the score down. Take it if free matching is enough and a verified profile matters to you. Skip it if you refuse to pay to see who liked you, or if six-year retention of your contact details is a dealbreaker.

Performance6.0Updates ship almost weekly, yet September 2026 reviews report loading loops and an app that will not open.
Privacy & permissions5.5Location, contact info and identifiers may be used for cross-app tracking; core profile details are kept six years.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can men message first on Bumble now?

Yes. Since August 11, 2026, anyone in a match can send the first message, free of charge, not only women in opposite-gender matches. Each person gets 72 hours to write, and the other then has 72 hours to reply before the match expires.

2

Is ID verification on Bumble mandatory?

No, it is optional. You upload a government ID and a selfie, which the verification partner Veriff compares and keeps for up to 72 hours. A pass adds an ID verified badge, members can filter for verified profiles, and you can ask a match to verify.

3

How much does Bumble Premium cost?

There is no single price. The US App Store lists Premium at $17.99, $19.99 and $32.99 without naming plan lengths, and Boost from $2.99 to $12.99. The terms say promotional rates vary by region, subscription length and bundle size. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.

4

Does deleting Bumble cancel my subscription?

No. The terms say deleting the app or the account does not stop a subscription from renewing, so cancel it where you bought it: Apple ID settings, Google Play subscriptions, or payment settings in your profile. Deleting the account also forfeits any remaining paid time without a refund, and a new account cannot reclaim those benefits.

5

What are the best alternatives to Bumble?

Tinder and Hinge are the closest comparisons; both belong to Match Group, while Bumble Inc. also runs Badoo. In the second quarter of 2026, Hinge had 2.0 million payers spending $33.11 a month on average and Tinder 8.5 million at $17.90. The Bumble app had 2.08 million payers at $27.55, after a 16.9% drop in a year.
