About Plenty of Fish : Dating App

Free Plenty of Fish accounts can message mutual matches without limit, but writing to someone you have not matched with uses a First Contact, and the free allowance is one a day. Founded in Vancouver in 2003 and owned by Match Group since 2015, the service pairs Meet Me swiping with a filtered Search and a Face Check video selfie. The catch: Premium shows everyone who liked you, and unlimited First Contacts need Prestige.

Plenty of Fish Review: Free Chat With Matches, One First Contact a Day

One First Contact a Day: Where the Free Account Stops

A free account covers Meet Me swiping, Search filtered by gender, location, age, distance and religion, and unlimited chat once two people both say yes. Writing to someone before a match uses a First Contact: free members get one a day, extras are sold individually, and the top tier makes them unlimited. A profile photo is required to send one. Free accounts also see ads and hit a Likes cap with no published number. Details such as whether someone has or wants children open only from POF Plus, and the Meet Me age and distance filters do not apply to Search results.

Face Check: What the Video Selfie Keeps After Verification

Face Check is a short video selfie that checks for a live person and compares the face with your profile photos and other accounts; passing it adds a Photo Verified badge. The rollout is phased by region, sometimes on the website before the apps. The video is deleted after review, but the FaceMap and FaceVector derived from it stay for the life of the account and are erased within 30 days of closing it. Two audit images and an age estimate are kept for 90 days after closure, or a year after a ban. Where the scan is mandatory, deleting the account is the only way to delete that data. At least one September 2026 Play review describes a verification loop that locked a new member out.

POF Plus, Premium or Prestige: $19.99 a Week on the US App Store

Plus removes ads and the Like cap and adds extended profile details, a first look at new members and room for 16 photos. Premium adds read receipts and the full Interested in Me list of everyone who liked you. Prestige adds unlimited First Contacts and priority likes, but only some US iOS members can buy it. The US App Store lists a one-week subscription at $19.99, a one-month subscription at $29.99 and token packs from $1.99 to $17.99, while Boost and Super Like are sold separately. When moving up a tier, Apple and the website charge the full price and refund unused Plus time, whereas Google Play charges only the prorated difference. Prices vary by region and can change.

Sensitive Profile Fields and Expanded Discovery Across Match Group

Google Play's Data safety form lists race and ethnicity, political or religious beliefs and sexual orientation among collected data, and says device IDs are shared for advertising. Apple's label says usage data may be used to track you across other companies' apps. Sensitive details can also be used across Match Group to show community-specific offers, with an opt-out under Your Privacy Choices. Expanded Discovery & Interaction can show your profile on other Match Group apps until you switch it off. On Android, accounts can only be deleted on the mobile website. In December 2019, TechCrunch reported that the app had exposed first names and ZIP codes users had marked private; a fix had reportedly shipped.

Pros

  • Messaging mutual matches is free and unlimited, no subscription required
  • One free First Contact a day reaches people before a match
  • Share My Date links for friends expire seven days after the date
  • Paid Incognito mode hides your profile from people you have not liked or messaged
  • Take a Break pauses your profile without deleting photos or profile details
  • On Google Play, moving up a tier charges only the prorated difference

Cons

  • Seeing everyone who liked you in one list requires the Premium tier
  • Unlimited First Contacts need Prestige, offered only to some US iOS users
  • Late-September 2026 Play reviews describe repeated login errors and sudden account bans
  • Where Face Check is required, face data stays until the account is closed

Verdict

Plenty of Fish earns 6.1 because the free tier still does the core job, unlimited chat with mutual matches plus a daily First Contact, while a three-tier paywall, add-on purchases and late-September login complaints pull the score down. Take it if you want to message matches without paying and accept a Face Check video selfie. Skip it if you want to reach many people before matching, or if face data kept for the life of an account is a dealbreaker.

Core function7.0Unlimited free chat with mutual matches and one daily First Contact, but an unpublished cap on free Likes.
Ease of use6.5Phone number required at sign-up, Android deletion only on the website, and tier switches billed differently per platform.
Monetisation5.0Three tiers plus tokens, Boost and Super Like; Prestige limited to some US iOS users; virtual items are non-refundable.
Performance5.5Updates ship every few weeks, yet late-September 2026 Play reviews report repeated login errors and sudden account lockouts.
Privacy & permissions5.5Collects optional sensitive profile fields, shares device IDs for advertising and keeps face data for the account's lifetime.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you message someone on Plenty of Fish for free?

Yes, once you have matched: two people who both say yes in Meet Me can message each other without paying. Writing to someone you have not matched with takes a First Contact. Free members get one a day, extra ones are sold individually, and the Prestige tier makes them unlimited.

2

Is Face Check required on POF?

In some regions, yes. The Face Check video selfie is being rolled out in phases where local rules allow, sometimes on the website first, and moving your profile into a covered region can trigger it. The video is deleted after review, but the derived FaceMap and FaceVector stay until 30 days after the account closes.

3

How much does POF Premium cost?

On the US App Store, the in-app list shows a one-week subscription at $19.99 and both a one-month subscription and a POF Premium Membership at $29.99. Premium adds read receipts and the full Interested in Me list to Plus. Prices vary by region, plan length and past purchases.

4

Does deleting POF cancel my subscription?

No. The subscription keeps billing until you turn renewal off in your Apple ID settings, Google Play's Payments & subscriptions or Manage Account on POF.com, at least 24 hours before it expires. Deleted accounts cannot be restored, and paid upgrades do not carry over to a new account.

5

What are the best alternatives to Plenty of Fish?

Tinder, Hinge and Bumble are the usual comparisons. Tinder and Hinge share POF's owner, Match Group, and the Expanded Discovery & Interaction setting can show your profile on other Match Group apps unless you turn it off. Bumble is published by Bumble Holding Limited, outside that group. On Tinder, too, the list of people who liked you sits behind the second of three paid tiers.
