About PowerSchool Mobile

PowerSchool Mobile is the free parent and student app for districts that run the PowerSchool Student Information System, and it opens only after you enter your district's four-character code. Grades, assignments, attendance, bulletins and meal or fee balances appear when the school turns them on. The catch: Google Play users rate it 2.3 against 4.6 on the App Store, and stale grades lead the Android complaints.

PowerSchool Mobile Review: Grade Alerts Arrive Faster Than the Grades

Where's My District Code: signing in and what your district switches on

Sign-in starts with a four-character district code that points the app at your district's PowerSchool server, such as QJRS for Pennridge School District. PowerSchool's help pages say the code sits in the lower-left corner of the web portal once you sign in there. Inside the app, Where's My District Code searches by school or district name, or accepts a server address from your district. The app can't create a portal account: I Need An Account only explains how to get one from your school. Nothing works unless the district runs a supported PowerSchool SIS version and has enabled mobile access. An April 2026 update added biometric sign-in, which each user turns on, not the district.

Grade notifications versus stale grades: 46 of 199 recent reviews

Push alerts for grade and attendance changes, plus optional email alerts for grades, attendance and assignments, are the app's main draw. A June 2026 update hid alert toggles for products your district doesn't own and let SchoolMessenger messages trigger pushes. Of the 199 newest English Google Play reviews, posted between August 30 and October 1, 2026, 176 give one or two stars, and 46 describe uninstalling, reinstalling or clearing app data before new grades appeared. One parent complains that an alert opens the last screen viewed, not the child or class it concerns. None of the 199 has a developer reply. Play's 2.3 average trails Infinite Campus's Campus Parent at 3.2 and Skyward Mobile Access at 2.9.

MyPowerHub, PowerBuddy and paying for school lunch

Districts that moved families to MyPowerHub, PowerSchool's newer family portal, get extra modules inside the same app. An April 2025 update brought PowerBuddy, PowerSchool's assistant, to parents, along with SafeArrival absence reporting; MyPowerHub Payments followed in June 2025, with payment push alerts that August. Central Valley School District in Washington, for one, tells families to pay for school meals, yearbooks, athletics and library fines through MyPowerHub. Elsewhere, the dashboard can still show Meal Balance and Fees widgets, but Meal Balance needs the school to use PowerLunch.

The December 2024 PowerSource breach and what the app collects

Google Play's Data safety form lists user IDs and device IDs collected for app functionality, crash logs shared for analytics, encryption in transit and no way to request deletion. Apple's label adds photos or videos linked to your identity. PowerSchool's privacy statement says schools own student records and PowerSchool does not sell them. On December 28, 2024, the company learned that an attacker had used one compromised credential on PowerSource, its customer support portal, to copy student and teacher tables from some districts' SIS databases. Depending on the district, that meant names, contact details, birth dates, limited medical alert notes and, for some people, Social Security numbers. PowerSchool says it paid a ransom, yet districts were extorted with the same data in May 2025.

Pros

  • Free for families, with no ads and no in-app purchases on Google Play
  • One parent account covers several children instead of separate logins
  • GPA, attendance, assignments, meal balance and fee widgets can be reordered or hidden
  • Push alerts for grade and attendance changes, plus optional email alerts
  • Biometric sign-in since April 2026, switched on by each user

Cons

  • Google Play average of 2.3; 176 of 199 recent English reviews give one or two stars
  • 46 recent Play reviewers had to reinstall or clear app data before new grades appeared
  • Works only if your district runs PowerSchool SIS and has enabled mobile access
  • Student and teacher records were copied from district SIS databases in December 2024

Verdict

We score PowerSchool Mobile 6.7. It is free, carries no ads and puts grades, attendance and meal or fee balances for every child behind one account, but your district decides which parts work, the December 2024 breach hit the SIS data behind it, and Play reviewers keep reporting stale grades. Take it if your district runs PowerSchool and you want grade alerts, especially on iPhone. On Android, check the web portal before trusting a grade.

Core function7.0Grades, attendance, assignments, bulletins and meal or fee balances, but every module depends on what your district enables.
Ease of use6.0A four-character district code, a portal account issued by the school, and layouts that differ between districts and phones.
Monetisation9.5Families pay nothing: no ads and no in-app purchases; districts hold the PowerSchool license.
Performance4.5Google Play average 2.3 against 4.6 on iOS; 46 of 199 recent Play reviews describe reinstalling to refresh grades.
Privacy & permissions5.5Limited declared collection and no data sales, but the December 2024 breach copied student records, and deletion runs through schools.

Frequently asked questions

1

How do I find my district code for the PowerSchool app?

Sign in to your district's PowerSchool parent portal in a browser: PowerSchool's help says the four-character code appears in the lower-left corner of the menu. In the app, Where's My District Code searches by school or district name, or takes a server address from your district. The app is free but works only if your district runs PowerSchool SIS with mobile access on.

2

Why are my grades not updating in the PowerSchool app?

If the web portal shows a grade the app doesn't, the app is holding stale data. Of the 199 newest English Google Play reviews, 46 say new grades appeared only after reinstalling or clearing app data, sometimes after a grade alert had arrived. If the portal shows nothing new either, the teacher hasn't posted the grade yet.

3

Does the PowerSchool app cost money?

No. It is free on Google Play and the App Store, with no ads or in-app purchases, because districts pay for PowerSchool. Money you pay goes to the school: MyPowerHub districts can take payments for meals and other charges through MyPowerHub Payments. Meal Balance appears only if your school uses PowerLunch.

4

Can I delete my PowerSchool account and data?

Not from the app. Google Play's Data safety form says the developer offers no way to request deletion, and PowerSchool's privacy statement names schools as the owners of student records, passing requests on to them. Ask your district, which also controls portal access. Both store listings say the app needs Wi-Fi or mobile data.

5

Was PowerSchool hacked, and is the app safe to use?

PowerSchool was breached in December 2024 through PowerSource, its customer support portal, not through the mobile app; the company says CrowdStrike found one compromised credential and no other affected products. In October 2025, a Massachusetts man was sentenced to four years in prison, and PowerSchool confirmed he was behind the breach, The Canadian Press reported.
