About PictureThis - Plant Identifier

PictureThis is free to install and can name a plant from one photo without a subscription, if you close the 7-day trial offer. Unlimited IDs, Diagnose treatment plans and expert chat need PictureThis Pro, which US reviewers most often quote at $39.99 a year. Two peer-reviewed toxic-plant studies ranked it ahead of Pl@ntNet and PlantSnap. The catch is billing: the trial takes a card and renews annually.

PictureThis Review: Lab-Tested Plant IDs, Billing That Catches People Out

Free Version vs PictureThis Pro at $39.99 a Year

Close the trial offer with the X in the corner and the app still identifies plants and shows basic care tips; Glority's replies to Play reviewers say plant ID and essential care guides are free and need no card. Some September 2026 reviewers saw no close button. Pro adds unlimited IDs, disease treatment plans and unlimited expert chat, and a developer reply confirms watering-frequency reminders are now paid too. On Android, Glority's FAQ describes a Free IDs button that tops up identifications through sharing or a Feeling Lucky game, at least four a day, expiring if unused. The US App Store lists Pro at $3.99, $7.99 and $39.99, plus a $49.99 Family Plan; check the current price in the app, as it varies by region.

Identification Accuracy: 94% in a 2023 Study, Not a Foraging Guide

Glority advertises 98% accuracy across 400,000 species; those are its own numbers. Independent tests are narrower but favourable. In a 2023 Clinical Toxicology study of 16 Midwestern species, the app named the correct species 94% of the time against 34% for PlantSnap, yet the authors concluded no app tested can safely clear a plant as edible: at least one app called five of 11 potentially toxic species edible. A 2021 Journal of Medical Toxicology test found it fully correct on 10 of 17 toxic plants, ahead of eight for Pl@ntNet. Change the result lets you type in the right name. Recent reviews report misses on rare houseplants, succulents, lawn grasses and mushrooms. Identification needs a connection; offline shots wait in the Me tab.

Diagnose and Ask Expert for Help: Useful Tags, Shaky Verdicts

The Diagnose tab reads a photo of a sick plant and returns tags such as Not enough light, Overwatering or Poor ventilation, then step-by-step fixes that can include home remedies like a soapy-water spray. Full treatment plans are paid; Spanish and German reviewers in September 2026 hit the paywall the moment they asked for one. If the automatic answer looks wrong, Ask Expert for Help opens a ticket, and Glority's FAQ promises a custom plan from its botanist team within 24 hours. The weak spot is over-diagnosis: a June 2026 Play review with 41 helpful votes said every plant with brown leaf spots was flagged as having a pathogen, and an 18-month German subscriber wrote on October 1, 2026 that every plant now shows pathogens.

Glority, the Auto-Renewing Trial and Your Photo Data

The trial requires a card and converts to a paid plan unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, in Google Play or App Store subscriptions; deleting the app cancels nothing. Among the 150 newest English Play reviews, from September 12 to October 1, 2026, we counted 56 one-star ratings, 46 of them about billing, missing renewal reminders or the word free. Glority Global Group lists an address in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, and also publishes Plant Parent and PlantAI; the Android package name points to Xingse, the Chinese edition. Its privacy policy says it takes no precise GPS location, only coarse location from your IP address, but collects uploaded photos with their metadata and hosts data in the US. Apple's label lists purchases, identifiers and usage data as used to track you.

Pros

  • Beat Pl@ntNet and PlantSnap in two peer-reviewed toxic-plant identification studies
  • Care cards rate toxicity separately for people and for pets
  • Change the result lets you correct a wrong identification by name
  • Care Tools add a Water calculator, Light meter and Repotting checker
  • Ask Expert for Help promises a botanist's treatment plan within 24 hours

Cons

  • The 7-day trial needs a card and renews into an annual charge
  • Diagnose flags brown leaf spots as pathogens too often, reviewers report
  • No offline identification; photos wait in the Me tab until you reconnect
  • Unlimited IDs, treatment plans and watering-frequency reminders all need Pro

Verdict

We score PictureThis 6.9. Identification earns the points: two peer-reviewed studies put it ahead of Pl@ntNet and PlantSnap, and care cards separate toxicity for people and pets. Billing costs the most, with a card-backed trial that renews annually. Take it if you garden often and will use Diagnose, reminders and expert tickets enough to justify $39.99 a year. Skip it if you identify a few plants yearly, want to forage on its say-so, or prefer the free Pl@ntNet.

Core function8.594% species accuracy in a 2023 toxicology study, but Diagnose over-flags pathogens and rare houseplants trip it up.
Ease of use6.5Clear Diagnose, Identify and My Plants tabs, but a trial screen keeps appearing at launch and cancelling confuses many.
Monetisation5.0Card-backed 7-day trial renews annually; 46 of 56 recent one-star Play reviews concern billing.
Performance7.525 iOS releases between March and September 2026, yet reviewers report an unresponsive snap history and reminder glitches.
Privacy & permissions6.0No precise GPS, but photos with metadata are linked to you, and identifiers and purchases are used for tracking.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is PictureThis free?

Partly. The app installs free, and Glority's replies to reviewers say basic identification works without a card if you close the 7-day trial offer with the X. Unlimited IDs, disease treatment plans, expert chat and watering-frequency reminders need PictureThis Pro, and some reviewers say no close button appeared.

2

How accurate is PictureThis at identifying plants?

It scored best in two independent studies: 94% correct at species level across 16 Midwestern plants in 2023, and fully correct on 10 of 17 toxic plants in 2021. The 2023 authors still warned that no app tested can safely confirm a wild plant is edible.

3

How much does PictureThis Premium cost?

The US App Store lists PictureThis Pro at $3.99, $7.99 and $39.99, plus a $49.99 Family Plan; $39.99 a year after the 7-day trial is the price reviewers mention most, and UK reviewers quote £34.99. Prices vary by region and can change.

4

How do I cancel the PictureThis free trial?

Cancel in Google Play or App Store subscriptions at least 24 hours before the trial ends; uninstalling does not stop billing. On Android, look for Cancel, not Pause: two September 2026 reviewers found only Pause. Refunds go through Google or Apple, and Glority's privacy policy says it may share your activity logs with Apple for refund reviews.

5

Is there a free alternative to PictureThis?

Yes. Pl@ntNet, from the French research institutes CIRAD, INRAE, Inria and IRD, has no in-app purchases and got eight of 17 toxic plants fully right in the 2021 test, against 10 for PictureThis. Google Lens identifies plants inside its free camera search, though without care schedules or Diagnose.
