Runway vs Luma: Which AI Video App Gives You a Usable Clip

Runway puts Seedance 2.5, Kling 3 Pro, Gen-4.5 and Nano Banana Pro behind a single credit balance, and its Agent builds a video from a chat conversation instead of a timeline. That breadth is the draw. The cost is the meter: the free plan is a one-time 125 credits, every retry spends from the same balance, and reviewers say a subscription often still ends in buying extra packs.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-06. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The free plan is a single deposit of 125 credits that does not expire, plus 5 GB of storage and a narrower pick of models; nothing refills. The pricing page prices a five-second Gen-4.5 clip at 60 credits, so the deposit is worth roughly two clips at that rate, while a Gen-4 Image Turbo picture costs 2. Standard, at $12 a month billed yearly or $15 monthly, adds 625 credits a month, which the page converts to 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 or 104 of Gen-4 Turbo, and it is the first tier whose list says no watermarks. Pro lifts the allowance to 2,250 credits and Max to 9,500; parallel generations rise from five to fifteen to twenty. Prices are US listings and can change.
Agent swaps the timeline for a chat: describe the video, and it plans the shots, generates them and assembles the cut, then takes corrections as follow-up messages. Screenshots show Chat and Feed tabs, a bottom bar of three icons, and starter prompts such as putting a brand logo on objects or picturing a house after renovation. Since October 2, 2026 Agent can use Seedance 2.5 Draft mode on every plan, which makes fast 480p drafts that are enhanced after generation, so a rough cut costs less than a final render. Keeping one character or location across shots is a listed feature, and music, voice and sound-effect generation appears from Standard upward.
Credits are the only meter, and reviewers on both stores say every attempt spends them, usable or not. The complaints repeat: misspelled on-screen text, characters whose faces or outfits change between segments, and Agent retries that several App Store reviewers say ran without asking first. Packs are the fallback: the App Store lists 1,000 credits for $10 up to 10,000 for $100, and the website sets a 1,000-credit minimum, with bought credits that never expire. The terms say cancelling keeps access to the end of the paid period without a prorated refund, that the company claims no ownership of outputs, and that inputs and outputs may be used to train its models.

A 6.9 for the breadth of models and the chat-driven Agent, held back by a credit meter that charges for retries and a free tier that is only 125 credits once. Take it if you want several video and image models behind one subscription and can budget credits per clip. Skip it if you need a free trial that produces a finished video, expect exact on-screen text on the first try, or dislike prompts being used for model training.

The app is free to install, but the free plan is a one-time deposit of 125 credits that does not expire, with 5 GB of storage and a narrower selection of models. Nothing refills monthly. The pricing page lists watermark-free output from Standard, which is $12 a month billed yearly. Several reviewers say 125 credits is too little to finish a video.
Agent is a chat assistant: describe the video, and it plans the shots, generates them and assembles the cut, then applies changes you ask for in later messages. Since October 2, 2026 it can use Seedance 2.5 Draft mode, which makes quick 480p drafts that are enhanced afterwards. Its generations draw from the same credit balance as manual ones.
Standard is $12 a month billed yearly or $15 monthly for 625 credits, Pro $28 or $35 for 2,250, and Max $76 or $95 for 9,500. The App Store lists Standard at $14.99 monthly and $143.99 yearly. At 60 credits per five-second Gen-4.5 clip, 625 credits make about ten clips. Extra packs start at 1,000 credits. Prices are US listings and can change.
Cancelling keeps access until the paid term ends, and the terms promise no prorated refund for the remaining period. Standard and Pro credits reset monthly and do not roll over; Max rolls unused credits over for one month, and credits bought separately never expire. Cancel where you subscribed: in the App Store or Google Play subscription settings, or on the website.
Runway wins on breadth and loses on trial cost. It bundles several outside models, including Kling 3 Pro, into one credit pool, but its free plan is a single 125-credit deposit. PixVerse and Google Flow refill free credits daily, and Kling AI sells monthly plans from $10 in its iPhone app, below Runway's $14.99 Standard price in the App Store.
