Perplexity vs ChatGPT: Which to Use for Answers You Can Check
Perplexity for questions where you need to see the source, ChatGPT for everything you would do in a conversation — writing, reading a photo, talking i
Perplexity is an answer engine rather than a chatbot: each reply arrives with numbered sources, and its Pro Search mode asks a clarifying question before it searches. The free plan allows three Pro Searches a day. Pro adds a choice of eight models for $20 a month, but its Computer agent runs on separate credits that Pro does not renew monthly, which is the part to understand first.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-06. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The help center's plan table gives the free tier three Pro Searches a day and one Research query a month, with a setting called Best choosing the model. Pro, listed by Apple at $20, opens a selector with eight entries: the company's own Sonar 2, GPT-5.6 Terra, Gemini 3.7 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.6 and Nemotron 3 Ultra. Max, at $200 a month, adds GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5. The list is a September snapshot, and models are added and retired as providers release them. Screenshots show Pro Search's step counter and a row of source icons above each answer.
Type a broad request such as a trip to Thailand and the thread opens with a Pro Search card marked Understanding question: chips for Beaches, Temples, National Parks and Cities, a free-text box, and Skip or Continue buttons. Under each answer a Related block turns suggested questions into the next search with one tap on the plus sign. Deep Research repeats the habit for bigger jobs: it asks clarifying questions first, shows which sources it is reading, accepts follow-ups while it runs, and streams the report into a file that can be edited and shared. Finished threads go to the Library, which has Pages and Collections tabs.
Ask searches never use credits. They are spent only when Computer takes a job, the agent behind the autopilot update in the App Store listing that repeats tasks on a schedule, at most hourly. A dollar buys 100 credits; in-app packs are 500 for $5, 1,000 for $10, 2,500 for $25 and 5,000 for $50. Pro has no monthly allowance, only a one-time 4,000-credit bonus that expires after 30 days, while Max includes 10,000 a month. Auto-refill starts off and triggers at 500 credits on Pro. Recent Google Play reviews keep returning to this gap. Prices are US listings and can change.
Apple rates the app 18+, listing infrequent mature or suggestive themes, medical information, sexual content or nudity and weapons, and flags advertising; Google Play rates it Teen and shows no ads badge. Apple's privacy label links purchases, location, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics to the user, while Google Play says app activity, performance data and device IDs may be shared with third parties. Queries are used to improve the company's models unless the AI Data Usage toggle in Settings is off. Incognito threads expire within 24 hours, and Memory can be reviewed and cleared in Settings.

Choose it when a question needs sources you can open, such as research and fact-checking, and start on the free tier, which gives three Pro Searches a day. Subscribe to Pro for the model choice rather than for Computer, whose credits Pro does not renew. Skip it if you want a companion for photos, voice and image play, or if the phone belongs to a teenager, given Apple's 18+ rating.

Yes, the app is free on iPhone and Android, and basic searches are practically unlimited. The free plan allows three Pro Searches a day and one Research query a month, and it picks the model for you. Choosing a model, generating images and creating files need Pro. Published limits can change.
Pro Search runs several searches and shows its steps before the answer. For a broad request it first asks what you mean, offering chips such as beaches or temples for a Thailand trip. The answer lists numbered sources you can open, and the Related block starts the next question with one tap. Deep Research streams a full report into an editable file.
Pro is $20 a month on the App Store listing; Max is $200 monthly or $2,000 yearly, with annual billing on the web only. Credits are separate: 100 equal $1, and packs run from 500 for $5 to 5,000 for $50. Pro gets a one-time 4,000-credit bonus; Max gets 10,000 a month. Prices are US listings and can change.
Cancel in the store that billed you: Payments & subscriptions in Google Play, or Manage Subscription in Apple ID settings. Deleting the account does not end a subscription, so cancel first. A Max upgrade made inside a mobile app creates a second subscription beside Pro, so check that both are cancelled.
It is built around cited web answers, while ChatGPT leans on photos, voice and image generation, Gemini on camera questions and Google services, and Claude on files and connectors. Entry prices line up: Pro is $20, ChatGPT Plus $19.99, Gemini's AI Pro $19.99 and Claude Pro $20. The difference is sourcing: every answer here carries it.
