About Rent. Apartments and Homes

Rent. is a free rental search app from Rent Group, a subsidiary of Redfin, which belongs to Rocket Companies. Searching, saving and contacting properties cost nothing, and Google Play shows no in-app purchases or ads badge; money changes hands at the application, which TurboTenant prices at $45 to $55 for small-landlord listings. The catch: since June 15, 2025, Zillow has supplied every listing for buildings with 25 or more units.

Rent. Review: A Free Search App Whose Big Buildings Come From Zillow

Free to Search, $45 to $55 to Apply Through TurboTenant

Browsing costs renters nothing: the March 2025 terms say potential renters may search at no charge, and Google Play lists no in-app purchases. Independent landlords who post through Redfin's free Rental Tools, built for owners of up to 10 properties with four or fewer units each, collect applications via TurboTenant. Its fee is $55, or $45 when the landlord pays for an Essentials or Pro plan, charged on submission and never refunded. Zillow sells a reusable application for $35 covering 30 days of unlimited participating rentals, and Apartments.com charges $32 plus tax for 10. The terms still name RentSpree as the screening provider, so check whose form opens before paying. US prices, subject to change.

Renter Card and the Call Button: How Your Details Reach Landlords

Google Play's listing promotes a Renter Card you can send to properties. The privacy policy describes a matching account feature: you may store self-reported employment, income and credit score, delete them at any time and choose which properties or landlords see them; Data safety marks credit score as optional. An Email or Schedule Tour request hands your name, email and phone number to that property, which keeps its own copy. Under the terms, listings carry unique numbers run by a third-party call servicer, and your voice, identity and call content may be recorded, monitored and stored, with a notice at the start of the call. Saved-search alerts arrive by push and email, though September 2026 reviewers say they ignore bed and bath filters.

Two Listing Sources, a Report Link and the No-Wire Rule

Listings arrive through two pipelines. Every building with 25 or more units comes from Zillow, while single-family homes and smaller buildings are posted by their owners through Redfin Rental Tools. Rent Group's safety guide says the company is not a broker and takes no part in leases or money transfers, so anyone promising payment protection, escrow or a satisfaction guarantee in its name is a warning sign. The guide also tells renters never to pay through Western Union, MoneyGram or an online escrow service and never to rent sight unseen. Each listing carries a Report a listing link, and a fraud line, (877) 999-4472, takes reports by phone.

No Data Shared, Says Google Play; the California Notice Disagrees

Google Play's Data safety form says the app shares nothing with other companies and lists seven collected data categories, including optional precise location, phone number and credit score. Apple's label says identifiers and usage data may be used to track you across other companies' apps and websites. Rent Group's California notice goes further: its disclosures to social media, analytics and advertising partners may have included identifiers, site-usage information and inferences about you, in ways that can count as a sale or sharing under state law. Opt-outs go through a Do Not Sell or Share page; in 2024 Californians filed 189 such requests and 115 were granted, the rest denied for failed verification.

Pros

  • Free to search, save and contact properties, with no in-app purchases
  • Walk Score card rates nearby dining, groceries and shopping on listings
  • Floor-plan tabs group units by studio, one and two bedrooms
  • Resident ratings appear as a five-star histogram on each property
  • Renter Card holds income and credit details you choose to share
  • 3D tours and HD video play inside select listings

Cons

  • Zillow supplies every 25+ unit listing, so complexes overlap Zillow Rentals
  • TurboTenant applications cost $45 to $55 and are never refunded
  • Calls go through tracked numbers that may be recorded and stored
  • September 2026 reviewers report alerts ignoring bed and bath filters

Verdict

Rent. earns 6.8 for a free, tidy search tool whose best details, Walk Score cards, floor-plan tabs and resident ratings, sit on an apartment feed Zillow has supplied since June 2025. Privacy drags it down: calls run through recorded tracking numbers, and the California notice describes sharing data with advertising partners. Take it to cross-check Zillow results. Skip it if you want inventory Zillow lacks, object to recorded calls, or rely on income-restricted tags, which recent reviewers call unreliable.

Core function7.0Walk Score, floor plans and resident ratings help, but large-complex inventory has come from Zillow since June 2025.
Ease of use7.5Map and list views with three contact buttons; reviewers say saved-search alerts ignore bedroom filters.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Rent. app free to use?

Yes for searching: the terms let renters browse at no charge, and Google Play shows no in-app purchases or Contains ads badge. Costs start when you apply. Listings from independent landlords on Redfin's Rental Tools take applications through TurboTenant, which charges $55, or $45 if the landlord pays for a plan. US prices, subject to change.

2

What is the Renter Card on Rent.com?

It is a profile you send to properties from the app. The privacy policy says your account can hold self-reported employment, income and credit score, which you can delete at any time and share only with the properties you pick. Google Play's Data safety form lists credit score as optional.

3

How much does a rental application cost on Rent.com?

For listings posted through Redfin Rental Tools, TurboTenant charges $55, or $45 under a paid landlord plan, with no refund. Zillow sells $35 for 30 days of unlimited participating applications, and Apartments.com $32 plus tax for 10. The terms describe no rewards program, only property coupons with no cash value for renters 18 and older.

4

How do I delete my Rent.com account and data?

Send a deletion request through Rent Group's Privacy Rights Form or email privacy@rent.com; Google Play's Data safety form confirms deletion can be requested. Expect identity checks: in 2024 the company granted 71 of 96 California deletion requests and denied 25 for failed verification. Marketing emails need separate opt-outs for Rent. and Apartment Guide.

5

Is Rent.com better than Zillow for finding apartments?

Not for large complexes: since June 15, 2025, Zillow has been the sole source of Rent.com listings for buildings with 25 or more units. Zillow adds a $35 reusable application valid for 30 days. Pick this app for Walk Score cards and the Renter Card, or Apartments.com, run by CoStar, for a separate listing network.
