Thumbtack Review: Free to Hire, With Fine Print on Checks and Claims

Free for customers: pros pay per lead, and you pay the pro directly

Searching, messaging and hiring cost a customer nothing, because contacting a pro from your results charges that pro automatically for the lead, at a price the pro sets and the company ties to the job's value. You then pay the pro however you both agree, usually by check, Venmo, Zelle, PayPal or Square. On-Demand bookings differ: a set price upfront, a card charged after the work, and a nonrefundable $15 fee for cancelling within 24 hours or missing the visit. Cost guides list national averages such as $70 for a handyman and $240 for a house cleaner; these vary by region and can change. Taskrabbit, by contrast, adds a Trust & Support fee, a percentage of the hourly rate, to every invoice.

Background checked: one criminal check per account owner, renewed every year

Each account owner must pass a criminal background check through a nationally accredited third-party provider when the account is created, and checks are rerun annually, with monitoring of real-time record sources. Results take 5 to 7 business days, and the badge appears 1 to 3 business days after a pass. The limit is who gets checked: the owner, not every worker. A sample profile in the store screenshots shows a 12-employee business marked Background checked, yet the safety guidelines warn this does not guarantee that the person doing your job was checked. The License verified badge counts only occupational licenses matched in a public database, and On-Demand pros also need a rating of 4.5 or higher and three customer reviews.

Thumbtack Guarantee: $2,500, $100,000 and a 14-day damage deadline

The Money-Back Guarantee repays up to $2,500 when a hired job is not done or not done as agreed, if you report it within 45 days. The Property Damage Guarantee pays up to $100,000 when a negligent pro damages your property, but you have only 14 days to notify the company. Both need proof that you hired the pro within 30 days of your request: the original request and the pro's quote, plus messages, a contract or an invoice. You also have to try to settle with the pro first; the free solution center usually follows up within 2 to 3 business days. Faulty installation and unfinished work do not count as property damage, and fine art, electronic data and losses from delay are excluded.

Your phone number, Opportunities and recorded Thumbtack numbers

Your number goes only to pros you contact, and you can reach up to five of them in the first four hours of a search. Through Opportunities, pros you never picked can still send quotes; they pay only if you reply and see your number only after you answer. A February 2026 Google Play reviewer asked for two companies and heard from four. Calls and texts through Thumbtack numbers may be monitored, recorded and transcribed by vendors, partly to make sure fees are charged, and the privacy policy updated on September 14, 2026 lets large language models process user data. Apple's label lists eight data types that may be used to track you, and Google Play's form declares name and email shared for advertising or marketing.

Verdict

We score Thumbtack 7.2: hiring is free for customers, the catalog spans 500+ categories, every account owner is background-checked, and the Guarantee covers up to $100,000 in property damage. Take it for one-off home jobs where comparing quoted pros saves calls, keeping the request and quote in writing for any claim. Skip it if you want each worker vetted rather than the business owner, or if recorded calls and marketing data sharing bother you.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Thumbtack free for customers?

Yes. Finding, contacting and hiring a pro costs nothing, and you pay the pro directly for the work. Pros pay for each lead instead. The only customer fees sit in On-Demand bookings, where cancelling within 24 hours of the start or missing the visit costs a nonrefundable $15. US terms; they can change.

2

Does Thumbtack do background checks on pros?

Yes, on account owners. Each owner must pass a criminal background check through a nationally accredited third-party provider when the account is created, and the checks are repeated annually. At businesses with several workers, the badge does not prove the person at your door was checked, so ask who will do the job.

3

How much does a pro on Thumbtack cost?

There is no fixed rate: you agree the price with each pro. The cost guides list national averages such as $70 for a handyman, $80 for a plumber and $240 for a house cleaner. Averages vary by region and change, so compare current quotes in the app.

4

How do I delete my Thumbtack account?

In the app, tap Home, then your profile photo, then Account on iOS, then Deactivate Account and confirm. Deletion is permanent: your reviews, past projects and messages with pros are gone, and reactivating later does not restore them.

5

Is Thumbtack better than Angi or Taskrabbit?

On fees, yes: customers here pay pros directly and owe the platform nothing, while Taskrabbit adds a Trust & Support fee, a percentage of the hourly rate, to every invoice. Angi's App Store listing cites 200,000+ pros in 50+ categories, against 300,000+ pros in 500+ categories on Thumbtack.
