About Samsung Health

Samsung Health is the free app behind Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring, logging steps, sleep, heart rate, meals and workouts on Android 10 or newer phones of any brand. Paired with a Galaxy phone it adds Vitals, Heart Health Score, ECG and Running Coach, which other phones do not get. The iPhone version is a separate app that pairs only with older wearables up to Galaxy Watch3, so Watch4 and later owners need Android.

Samsung Health Review: Free and Deep, but Its Best Tools Need a Galaxy Phone

No Galaxy phone? What Watch9, Galaxy Ring and iPhone owners lose

Google Play installs the app on Android 10 or later phones from any brand, though not on tablets. Without a watch, the phone counts steps, maps GPS workouts and logs meals. Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2 pair with other Android phones, but Samsung's August 2026 note reserves ECG, Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification, sleep apnea detection and Running Coach for Galaxy phones, and its footnotes add Heart Health Score and Vitals. A Galaxy Ring on a Pixel or Motorola loses Energy Score insights and Wellness Tips. iPhone owners get a separate App Store app whose compatibility list ends at Galaxy Watch3 and Galaxy Fit2, the last device it added, in December 2020. Samsung states that Galaxy Watch4 does not work with iOS, and the Ring has no iPhone support.

Vitals and Heart Health Score: version 7.0's best idea, unevenly shipped

Version 7.0 reached phones in June 2026 and splits the app into Activity, Sleep, Vitals, Mindfulness and Nutrition tabs. Vitals watches five signals during sleep (heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature and blood oxygen) and flags changes from a personal baseline built over 7 of 28 nights. Heart Health Score folds sleep, activity, BMI and vascular load into one daily number after 24 hours of wear. Samsung labels both as wellness tools, not diagnosis. Testing with a Galaxy Watch4, Android Authority's Andy Walker found Hearing, Fitness Index, Daily Cardio Load, Heart Health, Vitals and Vascular Load widgets on the dashboard by default, and none worked with his watch. Recent Play reviews add that sleep sessions can no longer be edited or deleted and the step-counter pause is gone.

$9.99 iFIT workouts, promo banners and a July 2026 AI-training toggle

Tracking, Together step challenges and Health Connect sync cost nothing. iFIT gives one free video a month in each of seven categories, then costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year in the US, and some Mindfulness meditation content needs an optional subscription; prices are regional and may change. Since 7.0, users report promotional banners in the Discover section, and Samsung's replies to Play reviewers acknowledge the promotional content. On Galaxy phones released after August 2016, Knox adds hardware-backed encryption keys, and the app refuses to run on rooted devices. Yet the Play Data safety form lists health and fitness info among data that may be shared, with advertising or marketing among the purposes. In July 2026 a consent toggle let Samsung use health data for AI training with human review; Samsung later said opting out keeps account sync working.

Pros

  • Core tracking, Together challenges and Health Connect sync are free
  • Health Connect sync runs both ways for steps, workouts, heart rate and sleep
  • Vitals checks five overnight signals against a baseline from your own nights
  • Settings includes Download personal data and Erase personal data tools
  • Knox-backed encryption on Galaxy phones, and rooted devices are blocked

Cons

  • ECG, Vitals, Heart Health Score and Running Coach need a Galaxy phone
  • iPhone app stops at Galaxy Watch3; Watch4, later models and Galaxy Ring need Android
  • 105 of the 150 newest US Play reviews give one or two stars
  • Data safety lists health info as shareable for advertising or marketing

Verdict

We score Samsung Health 6.9. Paired with a Galaxy phone and a recent Galaxy Watch or Ring, it tracks five overnight vitals, heart health and sleep at no cost and syncs both ways with Health Connect. Points come off for tools locked to Galaxy phones, a June 2026 redesign that drew a wave of one-star reviews, and a Data safety form that lists health data shared for advertising. Take it if you own Galaxy hardware. Skip it if you use an iPhone, or another brand's Android phone and want ECG or Vitals.

Core function8.0Vitals, Heart Health Score and sleep coaching go deep, but several need a Galaxy phone and a recent watch.
Ease of use6.0The 7.0 dashboard shows widgets older watches cannot use, and reviewers say sleep sessions can no longer be edited.
Monetisation8.0Tracking is free; iFIT costs $9.99 a month after seven free videos, and Discover carries promotional banners.
Performance5.5105 of 150 recent Play reviews give one or two stars, citing sync, sleep and workout tracking after 7.0.
Privacy & permissions6.0Knox protects data on Galaxy phones, yet Data safety lists health info shared for advertising, plus an AI-training toggle.

Frequently asked questions

1

Does Samsung Health work without a Samsung phone?

Yes on Android, with limits. The free app installs from Google Play on Android 10 or later phones of any brand and pairs with Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring. Samsung reserves ECG, Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification, sleep apnea detection, Running Coach, Heart Health Score and Vitals for Galaxy phones. On iPhone, only older wearables up to Galaxy Watch3 connect.

2

Does Samsung Health sync with Health Connect?

Yes. Since version 6.22.5 in October 2022 it syncs both ways with Health Connect, covering steps and exercise, heart rate and sleep. Galaxy Watch data reaches Health Connect through the phone app, because Health Connect does not run on Wear OS watches. Grant access under Settings > Health Connect > App permissions, and if data is missing, tap Sync now under Sync with Samsung account.

3

Is Samsung Health free?

Yes. Step, sleep, heart rate and workout tracking, Together challenges and Health Connect sync are free. iFIT guided workouts allow one free video a month per category, then cost $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year in the US, and some Mindfulness content needs an optional paid subscription. Prices are regional and may change.

4

How do I download or delete my Samsung Health data?

Open the app's Settings and tap Download personal data; after you confirm your Samsung account, the files land in My Files > Downloads > Samsung Health. Erase personal data, in the same menu, permanently removes your data from the phone and from Samsung Health servers, and you cannot sign in until deletion finishes.

5

What is a good Samsung Health alternative for iPhone?

Garmin Connect or Google Health, since Samsung's iPhone app works only with wearables up to Galaxy Watch3 and Galaxy Fit2. Garmin Connect runs on iPhone and Android with Garmin watches, keeps its measurements free and sells Connect+ at $6.99 a month in the US. Google Health, the Fitbit app renamed on May 19, 2026, is on both stores, and Fitbit Premium became Google Health Premium with a Gemini coach.
