About Strava: Run, Bike, Walk

Strava records a run, ride, hike or gym session and puts it into a feed where other people leave kudos and comments. Route maps show distance, climb and surface before you set out, and strength sessions get a muscle-map summary. Recording is free; the subscription that adds routes and leaderboards is $11.99 a month or $79.99 a year.

Strava Review: Free to Record, $79.99 to Analyse

Recording Costs Nothing

Pick a sport — run, ride, workout, yoga, trail run, and more behind that — press record, and the GPS trace, distance, time and elevation are saved without a subscription. A finished activity appears as a route drawn over a city map with the numbers beneath it: 6.75 miles, 57 minutes 56 seconds, 124 feet of climb, three achievements. Weight training is logged differently, as sets and volume with a body diagram shading the muscles worked — 45 minutes, 4,115 pounds moved across 47 sets, average heart rate 98. Apple named it App of the Year on the Watch.

The Feed Is the Reason People Stay

Every activity posts to a feed with photos, kudos and comments, and that social pressure is the product as much as the tracking is — thirteen kudos and a thread of encouragement under a group run in the store screens. Maps sit beside it: saved routes with distance, climb, time estimate and a surface breakdown between paved and unpaved, plus how many people have run them recently. Clubs group riders and runners by place or interest. It is the only fitness app in this catalogue whose retention depends on other people noticing.

Subscriptions, and the 2018 Heatmap

The App Store lists a monthly subscription at $11.99 and an annual one at $79.99, alongside cheaper $5.99 and $59.99 tiers, a $139.99 family plan, and a $149.99 bundle with the Runna training app. Paying adds route planning, segment leaderboards and deeper analysis; recording and the feed stay free, and there is no advertising badge. Privacy deserves a paragraph of its own: in 2018 the company's published global heatmap was shown to trace the outlines of military bases from soldiers' recorded runs, after which its privacy controls were substantially expanded. The install is 439.1 MB.

  • Rated 4.8 on the App Store across 371,000 ratings

Cons

  • Routes and segment leaderboards need a subscription
  • The annual subscription costs $79.99 a year
  • Public activities reveal where and when you exercise
  • GPS recording is heavy on battery over long sessions

Verdict

The best social layer in fitness, and generous where it counts: recording, saving and sharing are free with no advertising. Pay only if you want route planning and segment leaderboards, because the free tier already covers what most people open it for. Configure the privacy settings before the first upload — the 2018 heatmap episode is the reason that sentence belongs in a review at all.

Frequently asked questions

1

What is free in Strava?

Recording activities, viewing your own distance, time, pace and elevation, posting to the feed and giving kudos all cost nothing, with no advertising. Route planning, segment leaderboards, and the more detailed performance analysis require a subscription.

2

What do the route maps show?

Saved and suggested routes with distance, elevation gain, an estimated time and a surface split between paved and unpaved — 5.27 miles, 880 feet and one hour 44 minutes in the store example — plus how many people have logged activities there recently, which is a decent proxy for whether a trail is worth the trip.

3

How much is the subscription?

The App Store lists $11.99 a month or $79.99 a year, with $5.99 and $59.99 tiers alongside, a family plan at $139.99 and a $149.99 bundle including the Runna training app. Prices vary by region and by which plan a given account is offered.

4

Is it safe to share every run?

Treat this carefully. A public activity shows where you exercise and when, and in 2018 the company's global heatmap was demonstrated to reveal military base layouts from users' runs. Privacy zones around a home address, and setting activities to followers-only, are both worth configuring before the first upload.

5

What are the alternatives?

Garmin Connect and Apple Fitness cover recording and analysis without a social feed and without a fee if you own the hardware. Komoot plans routes better for touring. None of them replicate the feed, which is exactly why people who train alone stay here.
