About Garmin Connect

Garmin Connect is where a Garmin watch puts its data: runs and rides, a sleep score, Body Battery energy, stress, hydration and cycle tracking, all on one home screen. The app is free and shows no advertising. Since March 2025 a subscription called Connect+ sits above it at $6.99 a month, selling interpretation of the same data rather than the data itself.

Garmin Connect Review: Free Data, Paid Interpretation

Body Battery, Sleep Score and Stress Stay Free

The measurements that make Garmin watches worth owning remain in the free app. Body Battery scores your energy from 0 to 100 and shows how much was charged and drained during the day. Sleep Score rates the night out of 100 with duration and quality, and a Sleep Coach reads the pattern. Stress runs on the same one-day to one-year scale, with restful minutes counted against reactive ones. Hydration, menstrual cycle tracking and every recorded activity sit alongside them, with no tier gating the numbers themselves.

Connect+ Costs $6.99 a Month, $69.99 a Year

Launched in March 2025, the subscription adds AI-written insights on the data you already produce, a performance dashboard, live activity summaries, coaching for running, cycling and general fitness, exclusive badge challenges, advanced LiveTrack and 3D map views of routes. What it does not add is any new measurement — the watch collects the same things either way, which is why the launch drew complaints from owners of hardware that costs several hundred dollars. Notably, the Google Play listing declares no in-app purchases at all. Prices are US listings.

No Ads, No Sharing, but a Heavy Install

The privacy position is unusually clean for a health app: Google Play lists five collected categories, including health and fitness data, and declares no third-party sharing, with no advertising badge on the listing. The costs are technical instead. This is one of the largest installs in the catalogue, and the iPhone build now demands a recent iOS release, which strands older phones paired with perfectly working watches. Ratings sit at 4.4 on both stores, low for an app of this quality — the reviews are about the subscription, not the software.

Pros

  • Body Battery, sleep score and stress are free
  • No advertising and no third-party data sharing declared
  • Cycle tracking and hydration logging included at no cost
  • One home screen covers activity, recovery and health
  • Every metric charts across one day to one year

Cons

  • Connect+ costs $6.99 monthly for interpretation, not new data
  • One of the heaviest installs in this catalogue
  • The iPhone build requires a recent iOS release
  • Useless without a Garmin device to feed it

Verdict

One of the few health apps that has not moved its core numbers behind a paywall: sleep, energy, stress and every activity stay free, with no ads and no declared data sharing. Judge Connect+ separately — $6.99 a month buys interpretation of data your watch already collected, which is a fair deal only if coaching plans and dashboards are what you were missing. The install size and the iOS requirement are the real irritations.

Core function9.0Sleep, energy, stress and training data land accurately and chart across a full year.
Ease of use7.5Dense by design: the home screen is readable, but the depth below it takes learning.
Monetisation8.0Every measurement stays free; the $6.99 subscription sells insight rather than access.
Performance6.5A gigabyte-class install and a recent-iOS requirement for what is mostly charts and syncing.
Privacy & permissions7.5Five collected categories including health data, with no third-party sharing declared.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Garmin Connect free?

Yes, and it stays useful without paying. Activities, sleep scores, Body Battery, stress, hydration and cycle tracking are all in the free app, with no advertising. Connect+ at $6.99 a month adds analysis, coaching and map features on top, but no measurement is locked behind it.

2

What is Body Battery?

An energy score from 0 to 100 that rises with rest and sleep and falls with activity and stress, shown with the day's charge and drain totals. It is the metric Garmin owners check most, because it turns heart-rate variability into a single number that maps onto whether to train hard or rest.

3

What does Connect+ include?

For $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year: AI insights on your existing data, a performance dashboard, live activity summaries, run, cycling and fitness coaching, exclusive badges, advanced LiveTrack and 3D maps. It launched in March 2025 and adds interpretation rather than new sensors or metrics.

4

Does it work without a Garmin device?

Barely. You can log activities manually and use the phone for basic tracking, but sleep scores, Body Battery and stress all come from a watch's sensors. Without Garmin hardware the app is an empty dashboard, which is why it should be judged as part of the watch rather than on its own.

5

What are the alternatives?

Strava handles the social and route side better and imports Garmin activities automatically. Apple Health or Fitbit's app do the same job for their own hardware. For a Garmin watch, though, this is the only app that reads everything the device records.
