Why the Same App Is 60 MB on Android and 443 on iPhone
The same app is not the same size on the two platforms, and the gap is enormous. Google Photos is listed at 60 MB on Android and 443 MB on iPhone. Bra
Offline maps on AllTrails are not free: downloading a trail, a park or a custom area takes Plus, $35.99 a year in the US. The free tier still searches 500,000-plus trails with filters and records GPS tracks in Navigate. Peak, at $79.99 a year, adds route building inside the phone app. The catch: both plans bill yearly only, and trail lines rest on community edits and OpenStreetMap.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Without paying, you can filter trails by activity, difficulty and length, open pages showing elevation gain and estimated time, and record a GPS track in Navigate. Free accounts can also draw custom routes on the website. What matters once the signal drops sits in Plus: downloads of single trails, whole parks, or a custom map area of up to 500 trails; wrong-turn alerts; turn-by-turn cues that keep working on downloaded trails; voice navigation, added in September 2026; printed maps and 3D previews. Plus also removes the ads both stores flag on the free tier. Billing is yearly only, after a 7-day trial for newcomers. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.
Load a trail into Navigate, press Start, and the app warns you once you drift about 50 meters (164 ft) off the line, on the lock screen or on an Apple Watch; tapping the warning mutes it until you rejoin the trail and stray again. Live Share is the 2024 relaunch of Lifeline. Each outing gets a fresh link showing your position, route, mileage, pace, estimated finish time and cell-signal strength, and contacts can opt into SMS updates. It needs data: when coverage drops, viewers see your last recorded coordinates. For missing-person cases, the company releases account data only to law enforcement and aims to answer verified requests within 24 business hours.
Peak was announced in May 2025 and costs $79.99 a year in the US. Its headline is in-app route building; on the website, every account can still draw routes. Smart routing reshapes a line to be shorter, less steep or more scenic along OpenStreetMap paths, and a newer planner splits backpacking trips into days, with slope-angle and US public-lands map layers. Outdoor Lens names plants, fungi and insects from a photo, though the help center says it cannot confirm whether anything is safe to touch or eat. Strava's subscription also costs $79.99 a year but sells monthly at $11.99, and Komoot offers its maps as a one-time $29.99 World Pack. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.
Trail pages are moderated, but the dashed trail lines on the map come from OpenStreetMap, so fixes go there instead. New submissions are targeted for review within 5 business days for Peak members and 10 for Plus; free members wait as time permits. The terms disclaim any warranty of accuracy and put any reliance on the data at the user's own risk. In January 2023, England's Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called out on consecutive days to walkers following the app's routes where no path existed. Profiles and content start Public, and public recordings feed the community heatmap. Play's data-safety form lists precise location as shared with third parties, and the privacy policy effective September 24, 2026 says ad partners may count as selling or sharing under state law.

We scored it 7.0. The trail library, offline park and area downloads and 50-meter wrong-turn alerts carry the score; yearly-only billing, in-app route building moved to the $79.99 Peak tier, community-sourced trail lines and public-by-default profiles pull it down. Take it if you hike established trails and want offline maps and off-route alerts for $35.99 a year. Skip it if you need monthly billing, as Strava offers, or a one-time map purchase like Komoot's World Pack.

No. Downloading trails, parks or custom areas for offline use requires Plus or Peak. A free account still records GPS tracks without signal, but maps you never downloaded will not load. The 7-day trial unlocks downloads; cancel by the end of day six to avoid the yearly charge.
They warn you once you stray about 50 meters from the route loaded in Navigate, on the lock screen or, with the phone put away, on an Apple Watch. Tapping the alert silences it until you rejoin the trail and leave it again. The feature is part of Plus and Peak.
Only if you plan routes on your phone. Peak, $79.99 a year in the US against $35.99 for Plus, adds in-app Custom Routes, a multi-day backpacking planner and Outdoor Lens. Plus members who upgrade get credit for unused months but no Peak trial. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.
Plus runs to the end of the paid year; then the app reverts to the free, ad-supported tier without downloads or alerts. Refunds within 30 days of a charge go through Scout, the AI support chat, for web and Google Play purchases; Apple handles App Store refunds. Deleting your account does not stop billing.
Partly. A help article says location is never shared, yet Play's data-safety form lists precise location as shared with third parties for functionality and analytics, not advertising. Profiles and recordings are Public by default; set activities to private to keep them off your profile and out of the community heatmap.

Moving to a new phone goes wrong in the same three places every time: an account that was never tied to anything but the old handset, a photo library
Your phone does not keep a single list of everything you pay for. Subscriptions live in three separate places depending on where each one was bought:
