Best Travel Apps, Ranked by Our Scores
Booking.com and Google Maps tie at the top of this list at 7.6, and between them they cover most of a trip: where to sleep and how to get around, both
Upside pays cash back on gas, groceries and restaurant meals: you claim an offer in the app, then pay in store with a linked card. Cashing out to a bank costs $1 below $10, most gift cards need $10 but carry no fee, and PayPal has been gone since August 2026. The balance is dollars, not points. The catch: offers are personalized, and regulars report gas offers shrinking to pennies per gallon.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Nothing earns unless you tap Claim before paying, which locks in the rate. A gas or restaurant offer then lasts 4 hours, a grocery offer 24. Daily caps are tight: 5 claims across all locations, 2 per gas station, 1 per restaurant, 3 per grocery store, and 50 gallons per gas offer. Purchases must be made in person, and cash, EBT, SNAP and gift-card payments never qualify. Stacking a station's loyalty discount is allowed, but the per-gallon rate may drop to cover it, down to a 1¢ floor, and a fill-up already credited by GasBuddy or Checkout 51 earns nothing. The service is US-only and runs on phones, not tablets or laptops.
Most offers validate through the card saved in your Wallet: the retailer sends transaction data, which is matched to your claim, usually in 2–4 days and sometimes up to 10. The terms say a purchase not validated within 10 days carries no obligation to pay. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay hide the card number from the store, so those purchases always need a receipt photo with the store address, time and card digits. A claim marked "needs review" means no matching retailer data arrived; you then have 90 days to send a receipt or bank statement. Pay with offer code, offered at some locations, credits instantly because you buy a merchant gift code at checkout, capped at $400 and five codes a day.
Signing up instructs participating merchants to send your purchase history to the company, and your first redemption at a merchant authorizes sharing your history there back with that merchant, per the September 2, 2026 privacy policy. Card entry goes to Stripe, and the app keeps only the first six and last four digits. Bank cash-outs run through Plaid and Dwolla, leaving it your bank's name and the last four account digits, though a linked bank can also supply purchase history. The policy says app data is not sold, yet it may feed lookalike ad audiences on other platforms, and Apple's label lists usage data as used for tracking. The opt-out sits under Account > Data and privacy > Your privacy choices.
Bank transfers need at least $1.01 and cost $1 below $10; above that they are free and take up to 7 business days after you confirm a 24-hour email link. Gift cards carry no fee, but most require $10 and a few, like Uber Eats, $15. PayPal was removed from all accounts on August 14, 2026. The help center says cash back never expires while an account is in good standing, yet the February 4, 2026 terms say it expires after six inactive months, and closing an account forfeits the balance. Ibotta makes you reach $20 before a bank or PayPal withdrawal, and Fetch points lapse after 90 inactive days. Fees may change.

We score Upside 6.6 because it pays real dollars, cheap to withdraw, at more than 100,000 partner locations, while personalized offers, a 10-day validation rule and many 1–2-star reviews about unpaid claims pull it down. Take it if you already buy gas or fast food at partner chains, link the card you use and keep receipts. Skip it if you pay with a phone wallet, relied on PayPal, or mind merchants seeing your purchase history.

Only on small bank transfers. A bank cash-out under $10 costs $1, so the minimum is $1.01; from $10 it is free. Gift cards carry no fee, but most brands require $10 and some, such as Uber Eats, $15. There is no subscription or in-app purchase. Fees may change.
Through the credit or debit card saved in your Wallet. The retailer sends transaction data that is matched to your claim, usually within 2–4 days and at most about 10. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay hide your card number from the store, so those purchases need a receipt upload.
Mostly on early fill-ups. The developer advertises up to 25¢ a gallon on a first fill-up, but rates are personalized, and recent reviews say regulars' offers shrink to pennies; at 1¢ a gallon, a 15-gallon fill earns 15¢. The terms also warn that pump prices shown in the app may be outdated, so check the sign before detouring.
It can. The help center says cash back never expires while an account is in good standing, but the February 4, 2026 terms say it expires after six months without earning or redeeming. Closing or losing your account forfeits the balance, so cash out first. Unauthorized cash-outs are not refunded.
It never stores full card or bank numbers: Stripe holds card details, and Plaid with Dwolla handle bank links. Purchase data still travels: merchants send transaction records, your history goes back to stores where you redeem, and the policy allows lookalike ad audiences. Opt out of targeted ads under Account > Data and privacy.
