PayPal Review: Free to Send, 1.75% to Get It Out

Free From a Bank, 2.90% From a Card

The fee schedule is worth learning before the interface. Sending to friends and family inside the US costs nothing from a balance or a linked bank account, and 2.90% plus a fixed fee — thirty cents in dollars — when the money comes off a card. International personal transfers cost 5.00%, with a floor of $0.99 and a ceiling of $4.99. Getting money out is where the two routes diverge: the instant option charges 1.75% of the amount, minimum $0.25 and maximum $25, while the standard transfer that lands in one to three business days is free. These are US figures and change by region.

Pay in 4 Covers $10 to $2,000

Pay Later splits an eligible purchase between $10 and $2,000 into four payments taken every two weeks, the first at checkout, with no interest and no late fees. Bigger baskets go to Pay Monthly instead: $49 to $10,000 over three, six, twelve or twenty-four months, at a fixed rate between 0% and 35.99% set by credit, with nothing down. Active plans sit on one screen with progress bars and dates — a Best Buy plan three payments in, a Nike plan at one of four, each showing what falls due next. Partner stores pair the option with 5% back at chains including Nike, Lululemon and Walmart.

Subscriptions, Packages and Nine Data Categories

Two side features justify opening the app between payments. The subscriptions tab lists every recurring charge linked to the account with amounts and last payment dates — $36.45 for pet supplies, $22.99 for a streaming service — and cancels them from the same row. Package tracking imports shipping details from Gmail and maps a carrier's progress against a delivery window. That second one deserves a pause, because it means handing mailbox access to a payments app. Google Play's data card lists nine collected categories with personal information shared onward, and the listing carries neither an advertising badge nor in-app purchases.

  • Sending from a balance or bank account is free
  • Pay in 4 charges no interest and no late fees
  • Debit card returns 5% in a category you choose
  • Subscriptions tab cancels recurring charges from one list
  • Rated 4.8 on the App Store across 6.3 million ratings

Cons

  • Instant transfers cost 1.75%, up to $25 per payout
  • Card-funded sends add 2.90% plus a fixed fee
  • International personal transfers carry a flat 5.00% charge
  • Package tracking wants access to your Gmail

Verdict

The most useful thing here is not sending money — it is the layer around it: instalments with no late fees, a subscriptions list that actually cancels things, and a debit card paying 5% in a category you choose. The fees are the reason for the middling monetisation score, and 1.75% to reach your own balance instantly is the one to remember. Free when you plan a day ahead.

Core function8.5Sending, receiving, instalments and card management all work without leaving the app.
Ease of use8.0Send, Me and Home tabs keep the basics two taps away; the promo rows crowd.
Monetisation6.5No ads or purchases, but 1.75% instant transfers and 2.90% card sends add up.
Performance6.5A heavy install for a wallet, with noticeable load time on older phones.
Privacy & permissions6.0Nine collected categories, personal information shared, and optional mailbox access.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is PayPal free to use?

The app is free, with no advertising badge and no in-app purchases on its listing. Personal transfers are free when funded from a balance or a linked bank account. Fees appear when a card funds the payment, when the recipient is abroad, or when you want the money instantly.

2

How does Pay in 4 work?

An eligible purchase between $10 and $2,000 splits into four equal payments taken every two weeks. The first is charged at checkout, there is no interest and no late fee, and the plans screen shows how many payments remain and the date of the next one for each purchase.

3

What does an instant transfer cost?

1.75% of the amount, with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 maximum, to a bank account or a debit card. The standard transfer costs nothing and arrives in one to three business days, so the fee buys speed rather than access. Rates are regional and can change.

4

Can you cancel subscriptions from the app?

Yes. The subscriptions tab lists recurring charges linked to the account with the amount and the date each was last paid, and cancels them from that row. It only sees payments routed through this account, so a card billed directly by a merchant will not appear there.

5

What are the alternatives?

Venmo, owned by the same company, is simpler for splitting bills between friends in the US. Zelle moves money bank-to-bank with no fee and no instant-transfer charge, but offers no buyer protection. Cash App covers similar ground and adds investing, with its own instant-transfer percentage.
