Add ScoredApps as a preferred source on GoogleA half-finished paper crossword beside a phone showing a grid of letter tiles at a breakfast table — Best Word Games on Mobile, Ranked by Our Scores

The newspaper puzzle app wins at 8.1, and the half that costs nothing — Wordle, Connections, Strands and the Mini, refreshed daily — would justify the install on its own. Wordscapes is the best of the letter-wheel games at 7.3 and plays offline with no lives counter. Words With Friends is still the only sensible way to play a word board with someone in another time zone. Prices are as of October 2026.

How we picked

Every game here has a full review with five sub-scores — gameplay, controls, replay value, graphics and sound, monetisation — and the number at the head of each entry is the weighted result. Word games are played in short bursts over years, so two things decided the ranking: whether a puzzle works without a connection, and how hard the game leans on you at the moment you are stuck.

That second question is where the scores separate. A hint system that costs coins, priced so a difficult level can simply be bought, is a different game from one that lets you fail and come back tomorrow.

The spread is 8.1 down to 6.2, and the winner is the only entry whose puzzles are edited by people rather than generated.

1. NYT Games — six puzzles, half of them free forever

NYT Games: Wordle & Crossword scores 8.1 with a 9.0 for replay value. One app holds Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, the Mini and the full Crossword, each refreshed daily, with statistics, streaks and an archive of thousands of past puzzles. WordleBot grades a finished game, which turns a habit into something you can get better at.

Wordle, Connections, Strands and the Mini stay free; the full Crossword and the archive need the $6.99 subscription. A loaded puzzle finishes offline, but new puzzles and statistics need a connection. There are no adverts.

Good for: a daily habit with genuinely edited puzzles. Not for: anyone who wants everything without subscribing.

2. Wordscapes — the letter wheel done best, offline

Wordscapes scores 7.3 with an 8.5 for controls: one swipe through the wheel, and nothing is lost to imprecise fingers. Thousands of levels sit over photographs of real places, which is why a thousand similar grids still feel like progress, and daily puzzles and themed sets arrive on top.

Levels play offline with no lives counter — the single most important fact for a commute game. What to watch is the coin economy: hints at 25 and answers at 300, with coins running $0.99 to $12.99, priced so a hard level can be bought rather than solved. Apple rates it 16+ for advertising content.

Good for: offline play with no energy meter. Not for: anyone who finds purchasable answers tempting.

3. Word Cookies! — thirty thousand levels, no forced adverts

Word Cookies! scores 7.2 and has the longest tail here: more than 30,000 levels, 200-level drops, a daily puzzle calendar, a two-week Baking Rush once you finish, and variants including Jack's Cookie Jar, Attach and Cross Word.

Both store listings now rule out forced full-screen adverts — videos play only when you opt in for rewards — which is rare in this genre. The friction is elsewhere: reviewers report up to 21 taps of pop-ups before a puzzle starts, a two-week $4.99 Premium Pass, an always-on Piggy Bank, and answer words obscure enough to draw complaints.

Good for: flights and commutes, for years. Not for: players who want a clean opening screen.

4. Words With Friends — the board game with someone far away

Words With Friends scores 7.1 and still owns one thing outright: asynchronous play. Fifteen by fifteen squares, letter and word multipliers, seven tiles, and turns taken whenever each player opens the app, so a game with a relative abroad runs at whatever pace suits you both. Four side puzzles refresh daily.

The reservations are the coins, which buy in-match word suggestions, and an interface crowded by offers. Removing adverts costs $9.99, there is no offline mode at all, and its Google Play rating is 4.1 across 525,000 ratings.

Good for: long-running games with family and friends. Not for: solo play — the puzzles around the board are filler.

5. Scrabble GO — the real rules, the busiest screen

Scrabble GO scores 7.0 with an 8.5 for replay value: board-game rules with a full 100-tile bag, eight licensed dictionaries, and a Classic Mode that strips out boosts for a straight game. Weekly Leagues, Saturday Showdowns, Arena tournaments and Collections keep goals arriving.

Its monetisation sub-score of 4.5 is the lowest on this page. The screen is dense with events and offers, reviews report adverts with close buttons too small to hit, and there is no offline mode.

Good for: people who want actual Scrabble rules and tournaments. Not for: anyone who wants the board without the carnival around it.

6. Zen Word — the quiet one

Zen Word scores 6.9 and earns its place by subtraction: no timer, no lives, no leaderboard, just letter puzzles at your own pace. If every other entry on this page feels like it is asking for something, this is the one that mostly is not.

It is also thinner. The level design is less inventive than Wordscapes, and the progression is slow enough that players looking for a challenge will drift away.

Good for: winding down. Not for: anyone who wants to be pushed.

What we did not pick and why

Bubble Word Jam (6.4), Solitaire Associations (6.3) and Charades Guess Game (6.2) all sit in the lower half for the same reason: a familiar word mechanic wrapped in a coin economy that does more work than the puzzles do. Imposter Game (6.5) is a party game rather than a word game.

We also left the crossword-only apps out of this ranking. The NYT app covers that need and does it better than any standalone we have reviewed.

Bottom line

Install the NYT Games app first and play the free half — Wordle, Connections, Strands and the Mini are the best-edited daily puzzles on a phone, and $6.99 buys the full Crossword only if you want it. For offline play with no lives counter, Wordscapes is the one, with Word Cookies behind it for sheer volume. Keep Words With Friends for the people you play with rather than the game itself.

Frequently asked questions

1

What is the best free word game?

The NYT Games app, because its free half is genuinely complete: Wordle, Connections, Strands and the Mini refresh daily with no adverts. The full Crossword and the puzzle archive sit behind a $6.99 subscription as of October 2026.

2

Which word games work offline?

Wordscapes plays its levels offline with no lives counter, and Word Cookies lists offline play on both stores. The NYT app finishes a puzzle you have already loaded, while Words With Friends and Scrabble GO need a connection for everything.

3

Is Wordscapes or Word Cookies better?

Wordscapes scores 7.3 against 7.2 and has the cleaner swipe and better presentation. Word Cookies has more than 30,000 levels and no forced full-screen adverts, so it lasts longer; it also opens with more pop-ups before a puzzle starts.

4

Can you play Scrabble properly on a phone?

Yes — Scrabble GO uses board-game rules with a full 100-tile bag and eight licensed dictionaries, and its Classic Mode removes boosts for a straight game. The cost is the surrounding interface, which is why its monetisation sub-score is the lowest in this ranking.
