About Scrabble GO

Scrabble GO is Scopely's licensed Scrabble app, made with Hasbro in North America and Mattel elsewhere, and the successor to EA's version, which EA retired in June 2020. Around the classic board and 100-tile bag it adds Duels, weekly Leagues and Saturday Showdowns for 100 players, with US games checked against the NASPA Word List 2023. The catch: free play is ad-heavy, and only a monthly Scrabble Club subscription removes ads for good.

Scrabble GO Review: The Official Board, Buried Under Ads and Extras

Is Scrabble GO Pay to Win? Classic Mode Switches the Boosts Off

The rules are the board game's: a rack of seven tiles drawn from a 100-tile bag, premium squares, and 50 bonus points for a bingo that uses all seven. Standard games add three boosts: Quick Word plays a random word from your rack, Bonus Swap changes letters without losing the turn, and Word Spy shows every spot your letters fit. Duels swap in Rack Swap and Best Word. Games started from Scrabble Classic run with all of them off, a mode Scopely added in May 2020 after a petition to keep the EA app alive and complaints about the busy design. Pay-to-win objections are a minority in reviews: 3 of the 150 most relevant English Play reviews and 5 of 100 French ones, most of the latter from 2020 and 2021.

NASPA Word List 2023, Collins 2025 and Six Other Dictionaries

Scopely licenses eight word lists: the NASPA Word List 2023 for US English, the 2025 digital edition of the Collins Scrabble dictionary for UK English, plus French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian and Turkish lists. Each game locks in the dictionary chosen before it starts, and the flag beside a player's name marks that dictionary, not a country. Proper nouns, abbreviations and slang are rejected, and a long press on a word on the board shows its definition. Scrabble Scholar, which reveals the best move you could have made on your previous turn, is free once per game and unlimited for Scrabble Club members.

$7.99 Scrabble Club, $19.99 Gem Packs and an Ad Between Moves

Free accounts see full-screen and banner ads. Of the 150 newest English Play reviews, written between September 20 and October 2, 2026, 65 bring up ads, all but one to complain, many about an ad after nearly every move. The full fix is Scrabble Club, listed on the US App Store at $7.99 and $4.99 and billed monthly after a one-week trial; Scopely notes that members still see ads tied to optional rewards and boost offers. No-Ads Charms last from 10 minutes to three days, and Classic Mode players can buy 90 ad-free days. Gem packs run from 150 for $2.99 to 1,150 for $19.99; Gems skip the wait after a lost Duel, buy extra turns in Adventures and re-enter a lost Showdown round. Prices vary by region.

Scopely, a $4.9 Billion Owner and the Data Collected

Culver City-based Scopely published the game in March 2020 with the studio PierPlay, which it bought that April. Since July 2023 Scopely itself has belonged to Savvy Games Group, owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, after a $4.9 billion deal. Apple rates the game 9+ and lists loot boxes and advertising; Google Play's rating notes random items, such as Collections card packs graded Common to Legendary. The Data safety form says approximate location, user IDs and device IDs may be shared for advertising, while Apple's label lists location among data that may be used to track you. Syncing contacts requires SMS verification of your number, chat messages are deleted after 90 days, and an account can be deleted from in-game settings.

  • Outside Classic Mode, Word Spy shows opponents every spot their letters fit
  • No pass-and-play, no dark mode, and chat history disappears after 90 days

Verdict

We score it 7.0: the licensed board, the 100-tile bag and eight official dictionaries make it real Scrabble, and Classic Mode answers the pay-to-win worry by switching boosts off. Take it for turn-based games with friends if you can tolerate ads or will pay for Scrabble Club. Skip it if you want ads gone for a one-time price: Words With Friends lists a $9.99 Ad Free Bundle, and NYT Games suits solo daily puzzles.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Scrabble GO offline?

No offline mode is described in either store listing or Scopely's help center. Turn-based games, Duels, Arena tournaments and Showdowns involve other accounts or live leaderboards, and the troubleshooting guide suggests switching internet connections. Practice against Zoey is solo, but Scopely does not say it works offline.

2

Is Scrabble GO pay to win?

Not in Classic Mode, which runs with in-game boosters disabled. Standard games allow Quick Word, Bonus Swap and Word Spy, and Scrabble Club adds unlimited Scrabble Scholar and Word Power Meter uses. Gem packs cost $2.99 to $19.99 on the US App Store, and Gems buy extra Adventure turns, skip the Duels timer after a loss and re-enter Showdown rounds. Prices vary by region.

3

What do you need to run Scrabble GO?

Android 6.0 or later, or iOS and iPadOS 13 or later. The download is roughly 230 MB on Android and 300 MB on the App Store, and Scopely's troubleshooting guide asks for at least 2 GB of free storage. A web version also exists. There is no dark mode.

4

Can you play Scrabble GO with friends?

Yes. You can find friends through Facebook, a synced phone contact list or a search by name or user ID, and Multiplayer puts up to four players on one board. There is no pass-and-play on a single device. Chat has mute, block and report options, and new players may be offered bot games, which can be declined.

5

How long does a Scrabble GO game take?

As long as both players allow: standard games are turn-based, and one closes only after seven days without a move. Duels put a time limit on each turn, Showdown events run a few hours every Saturday, and League standings reset weekly. Match history covers only the last 14 days.
