About GeoGuessr

Google Street View drops you somewhere on Earth; you read house numbers, kerbs and shop-sign scripts, then pin a guess on a world map, and the closer pin scores more. The Stockholm studio behind it layers ranked Duels, Battle Royale and a streak-tracking Daily Challenge. The limit is blunt: GeoGuessr's pricing page caps free play in the app at one game a day, and Duels, Battle Royale and party hosting need a subscription.

GeoGuessr Review: Ranked Street View Duels Behind a One-Game Free Cap

One Game a Day and a 3-Minute Daily Challenge

Each round opens a Street View panorama. You hunt for clues such as house numbers, striped kerbs or the script on a shop sign, drop a pin on the map, and distance decides the score. Free play centres on the Daily Challenge: five locations with up to three minutes each, resetting once a day on Central European Time for all players, and an attempt finished after the reset does not count toward a streak. Beyond that, the official pricing page caps free play at one game a day in the app, against five minutes in every fifteen on the website. Streaks are fragile too: a free account gets a single streak freeze for its whole lifetime, while Unlimited and Elite subscribers receive a fresh one seven days after each use.

Duels, NMPZ and the Ranked Ladder

Duels is where the depth sits, and both store listings tie it to a subscription. Ranked matches move you through divisions; the overall rating stays hidden in Bronze and Silver, and from Gold up separate Moving, No Move and NMPZ ratings appear. No Move lets you rotate and zoom but not walk, while NMPZ also removes panning and zooming. Under the current rules, ratings decay after three days without a competitive Duel, for up to 30 days, unless they sit at 500 or below. On phones, Play reviews keep describing black screens and early timeouts mid-Duel, and the official remedy is a post-game report, capped at three games a month, that returns lost rating. Using Google Maps, AI tools, scripts or extensions during a game counts as cheating and can bring leaderboard removal, matchmaking limits or suspension.

$6.99 a Month, Two Look-Alike Plans and Fewer Modes

Unlimited costs $6.99 a month or $47.88 a year on the website, after a January 22, 2026 rise from $4.99 and $35.88; the US App Store lists it at $6.99 and $47.90. Elite runs $10.99 a month or $71.99 a year there and adds cosmetics: 15,000 coins at sign-up, then 500 a day. The same App Store list carries a Pro Mobile plan priced like Pro Unlimited, and the official site tells Pro Mobile holders that web games stay locked until they upgrade. Prices vary by region and may change. In 2026 the studio also retired Expedition mode in July, Campaign mode in August and daily missions in September. Desktop players have a cheaper route to Duels: the free Steam Edition, in Early Access since May 2025, offers unlimited Quickplay Duels but no single-player Classic Maps.

Pros

  • Real Street View panoramas, so clues are genuine signs, kerbs and scripts
  • Daily Challenge: five locations, three minutes each, free with an account
  • No ads in the mobile app; neither store lists advertising
  • Duels split into Moving, No Move and NMPZ with separate ratings
  • Written anti-cheat rules name AI tools, scripts and extensions, with suspensions
  • Play data label says no user data is shared with third parties

Cons

  • Free play in the app is capped at one game a day
  • Duels, Battle Royale and party hosting need a subscription from $6.99 monthly
  • Play reviews report black screens and early timeouts during mobile Duels
  • Expedition, Campaign and daily missions were all retired during 2026

Verdict

The 6.7 splits the game from its access. Reading real Street View clues and climbing ranked Duels in three variants earns the high gameplay mark; one free app game a day, with every other mode at $6.99 a month in the US, drags the total down. Take it if you will subscribe and want ranked competition. Skip it if you want free daily practice: Seterra Geography (full), from the same studio, offers 300+ map quizzes without ads or purchases, and WorldGuessr runs a similar Street View loop free with banner ads.

Gameplay8.0Reading real Street View clues, plus Duels in Moving, No Move and NMPZ variants, gives genuine depth.
Controls6.5Play reviews cite blank guess maps, black screens and timeouts; rating refunds are capped at three games monthly.
Replay value7.5Endless real-world locations and decaying ranked ratings, but three modes were retired in 2026.
Graphics & sound7.0Google's Street View imagery carries the visuals; cartoon 3D avatars fill the menus, and panoramas sometimes fail to load.
Monetisation4.5No ads, but one free app game a day and Unlimited at $6.99 monthly after a 2026 increase.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play GeoGuessr offline?

No. Every round streams Google Street View imagery, and since May 28, 2026 the apps ask you to verify an email for one-time-code logins, a change that also ends guest accounts. For offline geography practice, Seterra Geography (full), made by the same company, supports offline play on iPhone.

2

Is GeoGuessr free or pay to win?

Neither, exactly: money buys access, not power. Free app play stops at one game a day, while Unlimited, at $6.99 a month or $47.88 a year on the web in the US, opens all modes without time limits. Elite adds cosmetics and coins, 15,000 at sign-up plus 500 daily. Prices vary by region. Subscriptions can be withdrawn within 14 days; virtual items lose that right once delivered.

3

What do you need to run GeoGuessr on a phone?

Android 8.1 or newer, or iOS 17 or later on iPhone and iPad. The official troubleshooting guide asks for 1–2 GB of free storage. Google Play rates it Everyone, while the App Store rates it 13+ for frequent contests, chat and user-generated content. The terms set 16 as the minimum age without a guardian's consent.

4

Can you play GeoGuessr with friends?

Yes, but hosting costs money. Creating a Party is subscription-only in the app, though friends can join with a code, and Duels and Battle Royale also need a plan. One account covers web, mobile and Steam, yet the app and website run as separate platforms, so levels can differ and some features exist on only one. Play reviewers say Team Duels and clubs are missing from the app.

5

How long does a GeoGuessr game take?

A Daily Challenge is five rounds of up to three minutes each, so 15 minutes at most. In Duels, once your opponent guesses you get 15 seconds to answer, according to the official troubleshooting notes. Free app players are capped at one game a day; subscribers play without time limits. For broader trivia with no daily cap, Trivia Crack stays free but runs ads.
