About UNO!

UNO! Review: Team Play, House Rules, 656 MB

Two Against Two Is the Best Mode

The rules are the ones everyone already knows — match colour or number, draw twos, wild cards, and a button to press before your last card. What the app adds is partnership: 2v2 matches where you and a teammate share a goal and can signal to each other, which changes the calculation on every skip and reverse. Coins are staked on entry and paid to the winner, so tables are tiered by how much you are willing to risk. Matches take a couple of minutes, and the turn timer keeps other people from stalling.

Private Rooms Take House Rules

Room mode lets a group turn on the variations families argue about — stacking draw cards, jumping in out of turn, the seven-zero swap — so an argument about whether stacking is legal can be settled by configuration rather than shouting. Go Wild tables raise the stakes with 80 and 200 coin entries. Around all of it sits a collection of themed decks, a tiered leaderboard and a chat window, which is the social layer that keeps a fifty-year-old card game running as a live service. Deck skins are cosmetic, so nothing bought there changes which cards arrive.

656.7 MB, Adverts and Coin Packs

The install is 656.7 MB, which is more than most 3D games in this catalogue and hard to justify for a card game. Google Play carries an advertising badge and in-app purchases against 100 million installs and 4.3 stars from 2.58 million reviews; Apple shows 4.7 from 651,000 ratings and rates it 4+ with advertising and chat listed. Purchases are coin and diamond packs from $1.99 to $19.99, with a coin bank at $3.99. Running out of coins is the pressure point, because it locks you out of the higher tables until you win or buy more.

Pros

  • 2v2 partner matches with teammate signalling
  • House rules configurable in private rooms
  • Matches finish in a couple of minutes
  • Rated 4.7 on the App Store across 651,000 ratings
  • The rules need no explaining to anyone

Cons

  • A 656.7 MB install for a card game
  • Coins are staked and lost on every table
  • Advertising between matches on the free tier
  • Rated 4.3 on Play, well below Apple's average

Verdict

The official version does what a digital UNO should: partner matches, configurable house rules and a private room your family can join from four cities. The costs are a coin economy that locks the better tables behind a balance, advertising throughout, and an install size no card game can justify. Worth it for the group play, not for solo sessions.

Gameplay7.5Faithful UNO with partner play adding a genuine layer of decision-making.
Controls8.5Tap a card, tap the button — nothing about the input needs learning.
Replay value7.5Tiered tables, events and decks, all paced by the coin balance.
Graphics & sound7.5Bright and clear, though the file size suggests far more than is on screen.
Monetisation5.5Staked coins, adverts and packs to $19.99 around a simple card game.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. Matches are against other people in real time, and even the coin balance is held on the server. There is no offline mode against the computer, which is the one thing families most often want from a digital card game on a long journey.

2

What does it sell?

Coins and diamonds from $1.99 to $19.99, plus a coin bank at $3.99 and themed deck bundles. Coins are the entry fee for tables, so buying them buys access to higher-stake matches rather than any advantage in how the cards fall.

3

How much space does it need?

656.7 MB and iOS 14 or later — larger than most 3D games here and the single oddest fact about it. Animated decks, events and video advertising account for the bulk of a download that a card game should not need.

4

Can you play with friends?

Yes, and it is the best reason to install it. Private rooms take invited players and configurable house rules, and 2v2 mode pairs you with a partner against another team. Chat and quick messages work inside a match, so a group can play from four different places.

5

How long is a match?

A couple of minutes, kept moving by a turn timer that plays for anyone who hesitates too long. Tournament events run longer because they chain several matches, but the base game is designed for the length of a coffee break.
