About Brawl Stars

Brawl Stars is a top-down arena shooter built around matches that finish in under three minutes. Three-on-three modes carry the game, with a battle-royale mode alongside them, and every brawler has one basic attack and one charged super. It is designed for a phone in one hand on a bus, which is both its strength and the reason it never gets deep the way a console shooter does.

Brawl Stars Review: Built for Three Minutes, Priced for Years

Match length is the whole design

A round lasts two to three minutes and that decision shapes everything else. Maps are small, respawns are quick, and a loss costs almost nothing, so the game is genuinely playable in the gaps of a day rather than requiring a session. Modes rotate, which keeps the short format from going stale — Gem Grab and Brawl Ball carry most of the hours, Showdown covers the battle-royale itch in a fraction of the time PUBG asks for. The trade is depth: there is no long game inside a match, only inside your account.

Controls without a gamepad

Twin virtual sticks, one for movement and one for aiming, with an option to tap-to-aim instead of dragging. It works, and top players clearly manage precise shots, but your thumbs cover part of a small arena and there is no official controller support to fall back on. On a phone under about 6 inches it starts to feel cramped. Auto-aim is generous enough to carry beginners and precise enough to be a handicap later, which is an honest balance for a game aimed at a wide age range.

What the money actually buys

The 2023 rework replaced loot boxes with Starr Drops, which improved the odds conversation but not the underlying shape: brawlers and their upgrades arrive faster if you pay. Brawl Pass is the seasonal purchase and it is the reasonable one — a set of rewards for a fixed price rather than a gamble. Gems for direct purchases are where the spending gets steep. A free player reaches a competitive roster eventually; a paying player reaches it this month. Matchmaking mostly hides the gap, and mostly is doing real work in that sentence.

Pros

  • Matches finish in under three minutes and losing costs nothing
  • Mode rotation keeps a short format from getting repetitive
  • No ads at all, which is rare for free-to-play on mobile
  • Runs on six-year-old phones and installs in 420 MB
  • Starr Drops replaced loot boxes with clearer odds

Cons

  • No offline mode whatsoever — every match needs a connection
  • No official controller support and thumbs cover a small arena
  • Upgrades arrive materially faster if you pay

Verdict

Brawl Stars is the best short-session competitive game on a phone, and the absence of ads and energy timers puts it ahead of most free-to-play peers. Take it if you want matches that fit into three minutes. Skip it if you need to play without a connection, or if a roster that money unlocks faster will bother you.

Gameplay9.0The three-minute round is a genuinely good design decision, executed cleanly.
Controls7.0Twin sticks work but occlude a small screen, and there is no gamepad option.
Replay value9.0Mode rotation and a wide roster keep it alive for years.
Graphics & sound9.0Readable at speed on a small screen, which matters more here than fidelity.
Monetisation7.0No ads and a fair season pass, undercut by upgrades that money accelerates.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Brawl Stars offline?

No. There is no offline or single-player mode — every match is played against other people on servers, so a connection is required for all of it, including the practice modes.

2

How long is a Brawl Stars match?

Two to three minutes for the 3v3 modes and usually under four for Showdown. That is the point of the design: a round fits into a gap rather than needing a session.

3

Is Brawl Pass worth buying?

It is the least bad purchase in the game: a fixed price for a defined set of seasonal rewards, no randomness. Gems for direct unlocks are where spending escalates quickly. Neither is required to stay competitive, only to get there sooner.

4

Does Brawl Stars support a controller?

Not officially. Some Android setups map a gamepad through system-level tools, but nothing is supported in the game and touch is the intended input.

5

Is Brawl Stars pay-to-win?

Not outright — skill decides individual matches and there are no ads or energy timers. But brawlers and their upgrades arrive faster with money, so a paying account reaches a competitive roster months earlier.
