Google moved games on Android Auto out of beta on September 21: any developer can now publish a game to the car screen without special approval, and around thirty are already there. The rule that shapes all of it — a game only runs while the car is parked, and its audio must stop the moment you start driving.

What was announced

According to Google's developer blog, the games category for Android Auto and for Android Automotive OS with Google built-in reached general availability on September 21, after more than a year in an invite-only beta. Developers now opt in to the car form factor in the Play Console and submit against the car app quality rules, instead of being picked by Google.

The requirements set the shape of what these games can be:

  • Parked only. A game cannot run while the vehicle is in motion, and its audio must stop when driving starts.
  • Any screen. It has to adapt to different display sizes and to both portrait and landscape.
  • Touch first. Touch input is required; gamepad support is optional but recommended.
  • Resume where you left off. A game must restore its previous state when reopened.
  • It needs Android Auto on Android 15 or newer.

About thirty games are on the platform today, a number expected to rise now that the gate is open.

What it means for players

This is a waiting-room feature, and Google has designed it as one: charging at a fast charger, waiting outside a school, sitting in a car park. The parked-only rule is not a soft limit — the audio cut-off makes it enforceable.

For phone owners, the practical effect is that the car screen becomes another place your existing Play account reaches, with purchases and saves attached to it. The games that suit it are short-session ones: puzzles, card games, arcade runs. Anything that needs twenty minutes will not survive a green light.

There is a second audience here that matters more commercially: developers. Until now a game on the car screen needed Google's invitation, which kept the catalogue at a few dozen titles from partners. Opening the Play Console route turns it into a normal publishing target with its own review checklist.

What happens next

Google has not named the studios bringing games next, and the catalogue is the thing to watch — an open gate means the list grows by whoever ships first.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play games on Android Auto while driving?

No. Google requires that games run only while the vehicle is parked, and that game audio stops as soon as driving begins. The rule is part of the car app quality requirements, not an optional setting.

2

How many games are on Android Auto?

Around thirty at the time the category left beta on September 21, 2026. Any developer can now publish one by opting in to the car form factor in the Play Console, so the catalogue is expected to grow.
