Words With Friends now accepts more than 25,000 newly playable words, Zynga announced on October 8, among them BUZZWORTHY, BFF, DRIP and BOOKCLUB. The update also rewrites existing definitions and adds the game's first tool for reporting words, so players can flag a definition or challenge an entry. It works in every mode, live now.

What was announced

Zynga, the Take-Two label behind Words With Friends, announced the dictionary update on October 8 in a press release from San Mateo. More than 25,000 words became playable at once, and the new dictionary is already live in the app and on the web.

The additions lean on everyday language: pop culture terms, lifestyle words and slang. The four examples Zynga named are BUZZWORTHY, BFF, DRIP and BOOKCLUB. Existing entries also got modernized definitions, and Zynga says thousands of the new words are aimed at competitive players, opening higher-scoring plays.

What it means for players

The words count everywhere: head-to-head matches against friends and the single-player puzzles alike. A play that the game rejected last week may simply go through now, so it is worth retrying a word you gave up on.

The bigger change is the reporting tool, a first for the game. You can now flag a definition you think is wrong or challenge whether a word should be in the dictionary at all. Zynga frames it as giving players a direct role in shaping the official word list, which means the dictionary will keep moving rather than changing once every few years.

Zynga's mobile games chief, Yaron Leyvand, said players had asked for new words, modern definitions and a dictionary that evolves alongside them.

Our full rating of the game is on our Words With Friends page.

What happens next

Zynga has not said how often reported words will be reviewed or how quickly challenged entries change. What it has said is that the dictionary should now evolve alongside its players, so the reporting tool is the part to watch: if reports turn into regular additions, the word list will change far more often than it has.

Words With Friends stays free to download on the App Store, Google Play and the WordsWithFriends.com website, and the new dictionary applies on all three.
