Three More States Are Lining Up IDs for Apple Wallet

As of September 22, Utah, Kentucky and North Carolina are the next US states preparing to let residents put a driver's licence in Apple Wallet. Sixteen states plus Puerto Rico support it today, with Virginia and Oklahoma added in the past month. Utah and Kentucky look close; North Carolina has said early 2027 as it rebuilds its digital licence system.
What was announced
As of September 22, the three names come from separate trails rather than one announcement. Utah showed up in backend evidence over the summer — the same pattern that preceded Virginia's launch. Kentucky had already said it would support Wallet IDs once it finished upgrading its digital identity platform, and that upgrade is done. North Carolina has been the most public: it is building a new digital driver's licence system and points to early 2027.
Today the feature works in 16 US states plus Puerto Rico, with Virginia and Oklahoma the most recent additions, both within the past month.
Where a Wallet ID is accepted has not changed: TSA checkpoints at more than 250 US airports for domestic flights, plus selected businesses and apps that have adopted the verification. It is not accepted by law enforcement, so the plastic card still travels with you.
What it means for players
The airport case is the only one most people will use, and it is worth being precise about it: a Wallet ID gets you through an identity check at a participating checkpoint; it does not replace a passport, and it does not replace the licence in a traffic stop.
The slow rollout has a cause. Each state has to run its own digital identity system and sign an agreement with Apple, which is why the list grows two at a time rather than nationally, and why a state's own DMV announcement is usually the first real signal.
There is also a practical reason to add the ID even if your state's checkpoints are far away: once it is in Wallet, apps that verify age or identity can request it directly, and a growing number of rental, banking and delivery apps do.
What happens next
Apple does not pre-announce these; a state goes live when its own system is ready. Utah and Kentucky are the near ones, North Carolina points to early 2027.
