Apple seeded the third developer beta of iOS 27.2 on October 5, and its release notes carry a change every iPhone owner in the EU will eventually see. App Tracking Transparency now supports a longer prompt and, for the first time, asks again once a year. In five countries the longer prompt is not optional.

What was announced

Apple released iOS 27.2 beta 3, build 24B5099f, to developers on October 5, alongside beta 3 of iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS 27.2. The interesting part is not the build number but the release notes, published on Apple's developer site.

App Tracking Transparency — the sheet that asks whether an app may track you across other companies' apps and websites — gets two changes for users in the European Union. It now supports an alternative expanded prompt, and it supports re-prompting on a yearly basis.

Apple's wording on the expanded prompt is not a suggestion. The release notes say the alternative prompt is required for users in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania.

The same notes list a known issue in Health: personalised summaries may not generate as expected in the Insights tab. That one is a beta bug, not a policy change.

What it means for players

Since 2021 the tracking question has been effectively a one-shot: an app asked once, and if you said no, it could not ask again unless you went into Settings yourself. Yearly re-prompting changes that for EU users. An app you refused in 2024 can put the question back in front of you.

The expanded prompt cuts the other way. A longer sheet means more information about what the app actually wants before you tap, rather than one line written by the developer. If you play free-to-play games, this is the screen that decides whether your session data follows you into ad networks.

Nothing changes outside the EU in this beta, and nothing changes on your phone until iOS 27.2 ships publicly.

What happens next

Apple has not given a public release date for iOS 27.2. Developers have to adopt the new API before the expanded prompt appears in their apps, and the notes show that API is still being renamed between betas, which usually means more than one beta to go.

The practical effect, once it ships: the tracking question becomes a recurring one in the EU, and in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania it arrives with a longer explanation attached. Apps you already refused will be able to ask again.

Frequently asked questions

1

Does iOS 27.2 let apps track me without asking?

No. App Tracking Transparency still requires your permission. The change is that EU users can be asked again once a year, and in five countries the request uses a longer prompt.

2

Which countries require the expanded prompt?

France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania, according to Apple's iOS 27.2 beta 3 release notes. Other EU countries can use it, but are not required to.

3

When does iOS 27.2 come out?

Apple has not announced a public release date. The third developer beta went out on October 5, 2026, and the tracking API in it was still being renamed between betas, which usually means at least one more beta before release.
