iPhone 18 Pro Owners Report Reboots After a Failed Face ID

Days after the iPhone 18 Pro went on sale, owners started reporting the same fault: a failed Face ID attempt inside a locked app freezes the phone and reboots it. The reports point at the Passwords app and private Safari tabs rather than the lock screen, and crash logs show kernel panics. Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 owners are separately reporting Neural Engine timeouts.
What was announced
There is no announcement — this is user reporting, and it began on September 21, three days after the phone reached buyers.
The pattern in the reports is consistent. The freeze does not come from unlocking the phone itself; it comes from Face ID inside an app that has been locked behind biometrics — the Passwords app, private tabs in Safari, or any app a user has chosen to protect. A failed attempt hangs the device and it restarts. In one forum thread, 22 of 24 replies confirmed the same or a similar problem, and the bug has been reproduced on at least one European unit.
Crash logs point at kernel panics connected to the biometric and Neural Engine paths. Separately, Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 owners report reboots traced to Neural Engine timeouts — a different device, the same silicon block.
Neither has an official acknowledgement, and both appear on the shipping build of iOS 27.
What it means for players
If you have the phone, the workaround is to stop using Face ID on app-level locks until a fix lands: use a passcode on the Passwords app and on locked apps, and keep Face ID for the lock screen, where the fault has not been reported.
Scope is the open question. This is not affecting every unit, and a reboot is not data loss — but a phone that restarts when you open your password manager is the kind of fault that breaks trust in the feature rather than the device.
It is also worth separating this from the other iPhone 18 Pro complaints doing the rounds this week — slower sustained SSD speeds on the 1 TB model and heat under long workloads. Those are performance characteristics; this one is a crash.
What happens next
Apple has not commented. The second iOS 27.2 developer beta is already out, and a fix for a crash of this kind would normally arrive in a point release rather than in that beta cycle.
