Apple announced on September 22 that Tap to Pay on iPhone now works in Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Peru. Any business there can take contactless payments on an iPhone alone — no card reader, no dongle — with customers tapping a phone, watch or card against the merchant's handset.

What was announced

Apple confirmed the expansion on September 22, adding eight countries in Latin America and the Caribbean: Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Peru.

The feature itself is unchanged. Tap to Pay on iPhone lets a business accept contactless payments with no point-of-sale hardware at all — the merchant's iPhone is the terminal. A customer pays by tapping their own iPhone or Apple Watch, a contactless credit or debit card, or any other contactless method against it.

What a merchant needs on top of the phone is an app from a payment provider that supports the feature in that country; Apple does not process the payments itself.

What it means for players

For a small business this removes the hardware line from the cost of taking cards: no terminal to buy or rent, no separate device to charge, no dongle to pair. In markets where card acceptance has been limited by exactly that cost, it is a bigger change than it looks.

For a customer it changes nothing about how you pay. The difference is where you can pay — a market stall, a delivery driver or a taxi that could not justify a terminal can now take a tap.

The limit worth knowing: availability depends on payment providers switching it on locally, so it appears with the apps those providers ship rather than all at once on launch day.

Security sits inside the phone rather than in an app: card data is handled by the same Secure Element that runs Apple Pay, and Apple says it does not see what the customer bought. That is the argument for using it rather than a cheap third-party reader.

What happens next

Apple has not said which countries are next. The pattern over the past two years has been batches of five to eight markets every few months, usually announced without an event.
