About Bose

The Bose app sets up and controls the company's current headphones, earbuds, soundbars, Wi-Fi speakers and S1 Pro+ PA system, covering noise-cancelling Modes, a bass, mid and treble equalizer, firmware updates, Alexa and multi-room groups. It is free, with no ads or in-app purchases. The catch is coverage and stability: older Bluetooth models still need the separate Connect app, and recent Play reviews describe the app forgetting paired products.

Bose App Review: Free Control for 33 Products, Patchy Reliability

33 products in the app, 21 left on Bose Connect, SoundTouch cut off

The company's app page lists 33 compatible products, from QuietComfort Ultra headphones and earbuds to the Smart Ultra Soundbar, SoundLink Max, S1 Pro+ and L1 Pro line arrays, and a May 2026 update added the Lifestyle Collection. Generation decides support: the first SoundLink Flex, QuietComfort 35 II, SoundLink Revolve and original S1 Pro are among 21 models that stay on the older Bose Connect app, while the second-generation Flex and the S1 Pro+ moved here. SoundTouch systems never joined. Their cloud shut down on May 6, 2026, and the SoundTouch app now works only on the home network: presets, in-app music browsing and Alexa are gone, and security updates have ended.

Three EQ bands, five presets and Cinema Mode on the QC Ultra

On headphones and portable speakers the EQ screen offers Flat, Bass Boost, Bass Reducer, Treble Boost and Treble Reducer, plus a Custom curve set with bass, mid and treble sliders. Noise control goes deeper: Quiet and Aware modes, ActiveSense in Aware, Immersive Audio, custom listening modes and, on the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), Cinema Mode and a manual noise-cancelling level. A firmware update for those headphones on September 8, 2026 added LE Audio and Auracast in beta and 5.1 spatial audio with head tracking on compatible Android phones. The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar adds surround and height levels and CustomTune room calibration through the phone's microphone.

My Bose sign-in, permissions and 40-minute firmware transfers

Setting up a Wi-Fi soundbar requires signing in or creating a My Bose account, by email, Apple or Facebook, and granting Location, Local Network and Bluetooth permissions; without them the app cannot find the product. The welcome screen shows a Do It Later button, but the earbud setup guide still adds products to an account. Firmware for the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) can take up to 40 minutes to transfer, with the app kept open, then up to 15 minutes to install, while the charging case of the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) updates only from a computer. A July 2025 Play review with 237 helpful votes says the app shows no devices without an internet connection.

Data safety says nothing shared; the privacy policy lists head movement and room noise

In Google Play's Data safety form the developer declares no sharing with third parties, encryption in transit and a deletion option, yet name, email, user IDs, device IDs and app interactions are collected partly for advertising or marketing. Apple's label likewise links contact info, identifiers and product interaction to you for the developer's own marketing. The privacy policy, effective June 30, 2026, goes further: it covers the playlists, songs and podcasts you play, head orientation and movement, fit data, button presses, volume levels and noise levels around you. It states that the company does not sell data for money, but analytics and advertising tools may disclose it.

Verdict

We score the app 6.9. It is free, carries no ads, sets up 33 current products and handles noise modes, a three-band EQ and firmware updates. Points come off for reliability: 129 of the 199 newest English Play reviews give one or two stars, many describing a frozen logo screen or products that vanish from the app. Take it if you own QuietComfort, SoundLink Max or Lifestyle gear. Skip it if your speakers are SoundTouch or older models that need Bose Connect.

Core function7.5Runs 33 products with Modes, a three-band EQ, firmware updates and Alexa, but older models need Bose Connect.
Ease of use5.5Wi-Fi setup demands an account and permissions, and recent reviews say paired products keep vanishing from the app.
Monetisation9.5Free with no ads or in-app purchases; Alexa+ on Bose smart speakers requires an Amazon Prime membership.
Performance4.5The current release draws startup freezes on the logo screen; 129 of the 199 newest English reviews are 1–2 stars.
Privacy & permissions6.5Nothing shared per Data safety, but IDs feed marketing and the policy covers head movement and ambient noise.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Bose app free?

Yes. It is free on Google Play and the App Store, neither store lists ads or in-app purchases, and it controls 33 current products plus the 2026 Lifestyle Collection. The only paid extra we found is Alexa+ on the company's smart speakers, which requires an Amazon Prime membership and is limited to the US.

2

Does the Bose app have an equalizer?

Yes. Headphones and portable speakers get Flat, Bass Boost, Bass Reducer, Treble Boost and Treble Reducer presets, plus a Custom curve with bass, mid and treble sliders. Open it from the EQ shortcut on the product screen or under Settings. Reviewers in both stores ask for more bands and for saving several custom presets.

3

Does Alexa+ cost extra on Bose speakers?

Only the price of Amazon Prime: Alexa+ on these speakers requires a Prime membership and works only in the US. The company says it is the first premium speaker brand to support Alexa+, which rolled out to its smart speakers between April 20 and May 1, 2026. If Alexa is already set up in the app, say “Alexa, upgrade” to start and “Alexa, exit Alexa+” to go back.

4

How do I delete my Bose account and data?

Sign out by tapping the My Bose icon, then My Account, then Sign Out. Deleting the account goes through the company's privacy request form, and Google Play's Data safety form confirms you can ask for your data to be deleted. The QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) still pair from the phone's Bluetooth menu and remember up to eight devices.

5

Is the Bose app better than Sony Sound Connect or the Sonos app?

For EQ, the Sonos app gives speakers bass, treble and Loudness sliders with no mid band, and like Bose it keeps older products on a separate S1 Controller app. Sony's Sound Connect shows battery levels for both earbuds and charging case and adds Adaptive Sound Control. This app adds a mid slider and also runs S1 Pro+ and L1 Pro PA systems.
