Bark is not free: after a 7-day trial, the parent app costs $14 a month or $99 a year, covering every child and device in the family. Unlike free tools, its AI scans texts, email, YouTube and social apps for bullying, predators and self-harm signals, then alerts parents. The catch is the iPhone: message scanning there needs a home computer or the $6-a-month Bark Sync charger.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
There is no free tier. The seven-day trial needs a card on file, which the developer says serves as verifiable parental consent under COPPA. After that, the full plan costs $14 a month or $99 a year on the website, and one subscription covers unlimited children, devices and accounts. Bark Jr, listed from $5 a month, drops content monitoring but keeps screen time and web filtering. The terms dated May 5, 2025 rule out refunds, and the service is sold only in the U.S., South Africa and Australia. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.
Once a device or account is connected, the AI scans text, images, video and audio in English, Spanish and Afrikaans, including up to 60 days of earlier texts. Alerts show the flagged excerpt rather than a full message feed, and Alert Settings set sensitivity per category and delivery by push, text or email. Some social platforms connect only with your child's login. Apple blocks third-party apps from reading iPhone messages, so texts, photos and videos are scanned only via the Bark Desktop App on a home Mac or PC on the same Wi-Fi, or the Bark Sync charger, which adds voice memos, Notes, WhatsApp and Kik. Recent Play reviews describe false flags, such as a casual greeting tagged as bullying.
The privacy policy, effective March 15, 2026, says identifiable monitoring data is generally deleted after 30 days, though parts used for reports may be kept indefinitely. It says data is encrypted at rest and in transit, never sold or rented, and that automated scanning is not used for advertising. Google Play's Data safety form lists optional precise location and photos, with email addresses and device IDs shared for analytics and marketing; Apple's label lists identifiers used for tracking. On Android, the child app routes traffic through the Bark VPN for filtering and schedules; the developer says monitoring alone does not need it. The terms limit use to parents or guardians 18 or older monitoring their own children. We don't call any monitoring app safe; check the current terms with the company first.
Google Family Link is free and covers screen time, app approvals, Chrome site blocking and arrival alerts, but its feature list has no message scanning. Qustodio adds a premium tier to a basic plan, and its social-message alerts cover WhatsApp, Instagram and Line. Life360's free tier shares family location. Paying $99 a year buys content alerts across texts and social apps; contact approvals, app-install approvals, tamper-proof settings and driving summaries stay with the Bark Phone, from $29 a month plus the device. Of the 150 newest English Play reviews (June 17 to September 30, 2026), 126 give one or two stars over setup, false alerts and patchy location; about 20 of those come from monitored children objecting to lost privacy.

We scored Bark 6.2: its content alerts reach further than Google Family Link, and one $14 monthly plan covers every child and device. Points come off for iPhone scanning that needs a home computer or Bark Sync, no refunds and 126 one- or two-star reviews among the 150 newest on Google Play. Take it if you want alerts about bullying, predators or self-harm across texts and social apps. Skip it if screen time and location are enough; Family Link or Life360 cover those for less.

No. There is a 7-day free trial, and the developer has said a card is needed even then as proof of parental consent. The full plan then costs $14 a month or $99 a year for unlimited children and devices. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.
Only with extra setup. Apple stops third-party apps from reading iPhone messages, so the app alone handles screen time, filtering and location. Texts, photos and videos are scanned through the Bark Desktop App on a home computer on the same Wi-Fi, or the Bark Sync charger, which scans each time the phone plugs in.
The full plan is $14 a month or $99 a year on the website, or $14.99 and $99.99 in the iOS app. Bark Sync adds $6 a month or $49 a year, with a 60-day money-back guarantee. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.
Service stops for every child on the day you cancel, with no refund under the terms. Identifiable monitoring data is generally deleted after 30 days, though report data may be kept. Full erasure needs an uninstall and an email with a copy of your ID; the company says it follows within 15 days.
It does a different job. Family Link is free from Google and covers screen time, app approvals, Chrome site blocking and arrival alerts, but it does not scan messages. Bark charges $14 a month for AI alerts on texts, email and social apps. For limits and location alone, Family Link is enough.
