Best Learning Apps for Young Kids, Ranked
The best learning app for a young child costs nothing and sells nothing: PBS KIDS Games has more than 280 curriculum-based mini-games for ages 2 to 8,
It is not free: Cyprus-registered Benipol Limited lets you install this preschool app at no cost, then puts the games behind a trial and a subscription that renews weekly, monthly, every six months or yearly. Inside are tracing, matching, memory and speech games with a cartoon cast led by Didi, printable worksheets and no advertising. The weak spot is billing: recent Google Play complaints centre on add-ons sold during web sign-up and refused refunds.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The install costs nothing, but little past the sign-up quiz does: Benipol's own replies to Google Play reviewers call it a subscription-based app, and reviewers say card details are requested before the first game. On the US App Store the trial is itself an in-app purchase, listed as a 7 Days Trial at $7.99, next to Premium tiers at $7.99, $9.99, $39.99 and $59.99 with no billing periods named. The subscription terms allow weekly, monthly, six-month and yearly renewals, and reviewers in August and September 2026 quote about $8 to $9 a week. Prices vary by region and may change. The model clearly pays: the Google Play listing ranks the app #3 top grossing among educational games.
Speech is where most recent work has gone. iOS version 10.17.0, released September 14, 2026, added three conversation games, Talking Didi, Talking Luna and Talking Sparky, in which a character asks questions, waits for the child's answer and adjusts the chat to the child's age. Earlier updates pointed the same way: Hungry Frogs drills initial sounds, Fill the Gaps gained word scenes in February, and an October 2025 release added a seven-minute 'Could Your Kid Have ADHD?' questionnaire for parents, ADHD Smart Play games and an ADHD Font Mode. Some parents object: a September 2026 App Store review calls the talking characters AI and asks for their removal, arguing that toddlers learn to speak by watching a real mouth.
kidSAFE's member page confirms the seal both listings advertise: Benipol joined in 2025 and holds the SAFE CERTIFIED seal, which kidSAFE describes as baseline online-safety practice and a stepping stone toward its separate +COPPA CERTIFIED seal, not shown for this app. Google Play showed no Teacher Approved badge on October 3, 2026, while Khan Academy Kids carries one. There are no ads, and Apple lists Parental Controls and Age Assurance among the in-app controls. The data side is busier: Apple's label says purchase history and device ID may be used for the developer's advertising or marketing, Play's form says name and email may be shared for that purpose, and the privacy policy, effective August 6, 2021, names Facebook, Google, Snapchat, TikTok and Pinterest as partners for ad measurement.
Many complaints start on the website, not in a store. Benipol's web checkout follows the first purchase with a 'Welcome to Keiki!' screen offering extras such as a Jigsaw Puzzle app and worksheet bundles, and its disclaimer says proceeding bills the card entered at registration. The terms, last updated August 6, 2021, make website purchases non-refundable; web subscribers cancel with an Unsubscribe button or by email, while store subscribers go through Apple or Google, and deleting the app cancels nothing. Of the 150 newest US English reviews on Google Play, posted August 10 to October 2, 2026, 46 give one or two stars and 41 of those concern charges, including reported monthly charges of $39.99 and $29.99 and renewals without a reminder.

We score it 6.2: tidy, ad-free games for two- to five-year-olds and new speech practice, held back by billing. Take it if you subscribe through Apple or Google, where cancellation and refunds sit with the store, and set a reminder before the trial ends. Skip it if your child is six or older, or if you want a free option such as Khan Academy Kids or a one-time purchase like Teach Your Monster to Read at $8.99.

Yes, once it is set up. Benipol's own FAQ says the games run without a connection and Google Play tags the app Offline, but the sign-up quiz, trial and payment all happen online. One December 2025 Play reviewer reported games freezing mid-task both online and offline.
No. The download is free, but Benipol calls it a subscription-based app and play starts with a trial, which the US App Store sells as a 7-day item at $7.99. Premium tiers run from $7.99 to $59.99 and renew weekly, monthly, every six months or yearly. Prices vary by region and may change.
An iPhone or iPad on iOS 15.0 or later, or an Android phone or tablet on Android 9 or later; Google Play also lists a Windows version through Google Play Games. The iPhone download is about 311 MB.
Benipol says yes: its site describes a multiple-device function so two or more children can play at once, with progress kept when switching devices. Each child still plays alone, since Google Play classes it as single-player. One September 2026 reviewer found every device had to be downloaded and set up separately, with no separate child app.
Mainly two to five. Apple files it under Made for Ages 0–5, Google Play labels it up to 8 and the screenshots say 2–7; parents of six- to nine-year-olds call the content toddler-level. The App Store counts 1,500+ activities and 500+ printables, while kidSAFE's listing says 2,000+.
