Best Learning Apps for Young Kids, Ranked
The best learning app for a young child costs nothing and sells nothing: PBS KIDS Games has more than 280 curriculum-based mini-games for ages 2 to 8,
Sago Mini World gathers more than 40 open-ended toy games for ages 2 to 6, from Hat Maker to Rescue, starring Jinja the cat, Harvey the dog and their friends. Downloaded games run without Wi-Fi, and the app carries a kidSAFE COPPA seal. The catch is the paywall: only up to five rotating games stay free, and the rest need a monthly or annual plan from Sago Sago Toys, a Spin Master company.

Every game is a small toy world with no rules, timers or points. Children decorate a hat in Hat Maker, mix drinks in Super Juice or move dirt in Trucks & Diggers, alongside Jinja the cat, Harvey the dog, Jack the rabbit, Robin the bird and characters they design themselves. The help center counts more than 40 games, and the July 2026 update added Rescue, with a firetruck, ambulance, police truck and helicopter. Without a plan, the developer's Google Play replies from March 2026 promise up to five free games and say the free selection rotates; reviewers in August and September 2026 report seeing two to four. The catalog also loses titles: the help center lists 14 retired games, including Friends and Forest Flyer, both free titles in 2020.
Offline play is managed on one screen. Behind the Parents Icon at top left, which asks an adult for a year of birth, the Games list marks every title: a grey X means it came with the base download and cannot be removed, a green X means it is stored and can be deleted, and a blue arrow means it still has to be fetched. Downloads need a connection, and a Download over WiFi only switch in Settings keeps them off mobile data. Storage is the weak spot. The Android install is close to 900 MB before extra games, and the developer advises keeping 10% of internal memory free. The help center warns that a major update can wipe previously downloaded games and that a phone low on space may remove them, so check this screen before a long trip.
kidSAFE has listed the Piknik family of apps, this one included, since 2023 with +COPPA Certified and Safe Certified seals. Google Play adds a Teacher Approved badge and notes the developer's commitment to its Families Policy for this app. The privacy policy, last modified August 21, 2026, rules out behavioral advertising, yet the Data safety form says user and device IDs may be shared with third parties for analytics and marketing, and approximate location and installed apps may be collected. Hat Maker can use the camera, with images processed ephemerally, and Parent Area switches turn off camera access and snapshot saving. Google Play also shows a Contains ads label, while a store screenshot reads Safe & ad-free. The help center describes promo videos for other Sago Mini products, turned off with the Show Sago News and Show Piknik Promo switches.
Every in-app purchase on the US App Store is a plan. The help center offers monthly and annual billing, and Sago Mini World Plan entries run from $7.99 to $59.99. Piknik Unlimited adds nine apps, among them Sago Mini School and Toca Boca Jr, for $14.99 a month on Piknik's website after a 30-day trial; the Google Play listing promises a seven-day trial in the app. Prices vary by region. Upgrading to Piknik does not cancel an existing World plan, so cancel the old one in your store to avoid two charges; there is no cancellation fee, though the Google Play listing rules out refunds for unused time. Buying games outright ended on February 29, 2024, when standalone Sago Mini apps left sale. PBS KIDS Games offers more than 280 free games for ages 2 to 8; Toca Boca Jr, on the same Piknik plan, frees only Kitchen 2.

Sago Mini World scores 7.4 for more than 40 no-rules toy games that work offline under a kidSAFE COPPA seal, held back by a subscription that leaves at most five games free. Take it if a preschooler will play most days and a recurring plan, or the Piknik bundle for several children, fits your budget. Skip it if you want to buy once or pay nothing: PBS KIDS Games offers more than 280 free games for ages 2 to 8.

Yes, once games are downloaded. Fetching each game needs an internet connection; after that it runs without Wi-Fi. The Parents Icon > Games screen shows the status: a grey or green X means the game is on the device, a blue arrow means it is not. Check it before travel, because a major update or low storage can remove downloaded games.
Only partly. The app is free to install, and the developer says up to five games stay free on a rotating selection. Everything else needs a monthly or annual Sago Mini World Plan, listed from $7.99 to $59.99 on the US App Store, or Piknik Unlimited at $14.99 a month on Piknik's website. Prices vary by region; check the current price in the app.
It needs iOS 15 or later, or Android 9 or later, and close to 1 GB of storage before extra games; the developer advises keeping 10% of internal memory free. Google Play also lists it for Windows PCs. The help center says the Amazon Kindle version no longer receives new games.
Yes. One Piknik account unlocks a plan on up to 10 devices at a time, across iPhone, iPad and Android, and Piknik says one subscription covers every child in a household, each with a separate profile. On Apple devices, Family Sharing does not pass this subscription to other Apple IDs, so sign in with the Piknik account instead.
More than 40, according to the help center. Rescue arrived in July 2026, and Pizza Shop was added when 14 older games, including Village, Monsters and Superhero, were retired. Free players get up to five at a time.
