About Nova Drift

Nova Drift is Chimeric's roguelike space shooter — Asteroids-style arcade combat where your ship evolves every level from over 200 modular upgrades into a sniper, a drone carrier or a ram, in 15-to-45-minute runs with permanent death — sold as a $9.99 paid game on iOS since March 9, 2026 and Android since April. No ads, no purchases, a floor of iOS 10 and Android 5.0. Its Steam veterans bought it again; their one complaint is the fixed touch joystick.

Nova Drift Review: Build-Crafting Asteroids for $9.99, Waiting for a Floating St

Two Hundred Upgrades and a Ship That Becomes Whatever You Pick

The design is a roguelike where the build is the ship: every level-up in a run offers modular upgrades — over 200, unlocked over time — that stack into a style: snipe, command a drone army, discharge your shields, burn enemies with your thrusters or smash straight through them. Runs are 15 to 45 minutes and randomly generated, with a campaign, an endless mode unlocked by beating it, and challenge modifiers for higher risk and reward; death is permanent. Miles Tilmann's soundtrack and the neon vector effects are the other half. The Google Play reviews are five stars only, 55 of them: an April 6, 2026 review with four votes had waited for an arcade game of this quality since Geometry Wars, beat it first time, then unlocked endless; a July 7 review plays every night after work; an April 10 Steam fan calls the touch-control editor incredible. Rated 9+ and Everyone, in 11 languages, 600 MB on iOS 10 or newer and Android 5.0.

The Joystick Argument, a Black Screen on iPad, and Menus Too Small

The App Store's 54 ratings at 4.4 are mostly about one control decision. The joystick is fixed and must be dragged from its centre, and reviewers want it dynamic: the April 10 Play fan asks for it to respond to any touch in its area; an August 5 App Store three-star says the game desperately needs a floating joystick and is frustrating without a gamepad; a March 31 four-star who paid twice after Steam is frustrated that a $10 game got dual-stick controls wrong. A March 9 four-star finds the interface too small, selecting wrong upgrades because menu options sit close together. The launch bugs were worse: a March 10 iPad froze in the visual settings and then opened to a black screen even after a reinstall, a March 23 one-star on an M5 iPad Pro crashed three times before reaching play, and a March 30 review lost progress to failed autosaves. Version 1.2.374 on April 29–30 fixed an overscaled Draft button and a crash with Blades or Swords.

$9.99, No Ads, No Purchases, Controller Recommended

The economy is a price tag: $9.99 on the App Store and $9.99 on Google Play, no in-app purchases, no ads, no loot-box flag, and nothing collected or shared per Google's data-safety card; Apple lists no tracking. The floors are unusually low — iOS 10 and Android 5.0 — and the game supports controllers, which the reviews treat as the intended way to play until the touch stick improves. Steam owners describe buying it a second time without complaint; the game has been on PC since early access in 2019. Prices are regional.

Pros

  • Over 200 modular upgrades that turn each run into a different ship
  • 15-to-45-minute runs with a campaign, endless mode and challenge modifiers
  • $9.99 once — no ads, no purchases, nothing collected
  • A touch-control editor and controller support
  • Runs on iOS 10 and Android 5.0 — almost any phone from the last decade

Cons

  • A fixed joystick that must be dragged from centre — the request in most reviews
  • Menus and upgrade buttons too small to tap reliably, per a March review
  • Launch crashes and a black screen on iPads, per March 2026 reviews
  • Lost progress from failed autosaves, per a March review

Verdict

A 7.5: a superb build-crafting shooter sold for one fair price on almost any phone, with a touch joystick that its own fans call the one thing between it and perfection. Take it if you loved Geometry Wars or Vampire Survivors-style stacking and own a controller or a patient thumb. Skip it until a floating-stick option ships if touch-only play is how you live.

Gameplay8Build-crafting that reviewers waited for since Geometry Wars; early waves feel alike, per a July review.
Controls5A fixed stick with no floating option — the flaw that costs the port its fifth star, per fans.
Replay value8Random runs, endless mode, unlocks and modifiers — every-night-after-work material.
Graphics & sound8Vibrant neon vectors and Miles Tilmann's music, on hardware back to the iPhone 5S.
Monetisation9One price, nothing else — bought twice by Steam owners without complaint.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Nova Drift offline?

Yes — it is a paid single-player game with no ads, no online features and nothing collected per Google's data-safety card; a March 2026 one-star even complains that the developer's crash workaround involved airplane mode, which shows the game runs without a connection. Saves are local.

2

Is Nova Drift free?

No. It is $9.99 on both the App Store and Google Play, paid once, with no in-app purchases and no ads. There is no free trial or demo on mobile. Prices vary by region.

3

What phone do you need for Nova Drift?

Almost anything: iOS 10 or newer — iPhone 5S and up — with 600 MB free, or Android 5.0 or newer. The launch-month crashes were on iPads, including an M5 iPad Pro, and version 1.2.374 in late April fixed several. A Bluetooth controller is what reviews recommend, because the touch stick is fixed.

4

Can you play Nova Drift with friends?

No. It is a single-player roguelike with no co-op, multiplayer or leaderboards listed on either store. The Discord linked from the listing is where builds get compared, and the unlock screen is the closest thing to a scoreboard.

5

How long does a Nova Drift run take?

Fifteen to forty-five minutes by the developer's own estimate — short enough to iterate on a build, long enough to see it pay off — with permanent death and a campaign that an April 2026 reviewer beat on the first run and never again. Endless mode and the 200-plus unlocks are the long tail.
