About Toca Boca Hair Salon 4

Toca Boca's 2020 makeover game is free to download, but its makeup and face-paint station is not. Kids pick one of 20 characters, then cut, regrow, dye and braid hair, rinse it all off at a shampoo station and photograph the result. Since 2023 it has been part of the Piknik subscription, with a $5.99 single-app plan on the US App Store. The catch: every update since December 2023 lists only fixes and tweaks.

Toca Boca Hair Salon 4 Review: Deep Hair Tools, Makeup Behind a Plan

Is the Makeup Free? The Open Salon Versus the Face Station

The help center counts 20 characters and four style stations, and the Play listing names the areas: Hair & Beard, Face, Style, a Photo Booth and a Shampoo Station that rinses dye and makeup off. Help pages call it open-ended and there is no score to chase, so a makeover ends when the child takes a photo or picks someone new. Where Toca Boca World and Avatar World make hair one stop in a whole town, here the salon is the entire game. Without a plan the basic hair tools stay open, but the App Store description says the Face Station has to be bought, and reviewers also report locked characters and outfits. Makeup is the loudest complaint: 20 of the 150 newest English Google Play reviews object to paying for it.

Hair & Beard Station: Regrow, Dye and the 2020 Braiding Box

The Hair & Beard Station carries most of the play. Scissors, a razor and clippers take hair off, a grow tool restores what was cut, and curling irons and bright dye bottles change texture and color. A Braiding Box joined the station in November 2020, according to the App Store version history. Characters pull faces and make noises while you work, and that liveliness is also the main control complaint: Play reviews from 2020 to July 2026 say heads turn mid-cut and spoil a line. Common Sense Media's March 2020 review found the slide-up toolbar finicky and missed an undo button and a mirror for the back of the head. Finished looks can be saved to an in-game photo book and reopened for more styling later.

kidSAFE Seal, AppsFlyer and What the Data Safety Form Lists

Piknik is the trading name of Sago Sago Toys, a Toronto-based Spin Master subsidiary. On Google Play it commits this app to the Play Families Policy, and its privacy policy lists Toca Boca Jr Hair Salon 4 among titles certified by the kidSAFE Seal Program. The same policy says identifiers are not used for behavioural ads, names AppsFlyer for attribution and Mixpanel and Firebase for analytics, and keeps financial receipts for seven years after an account is deleted. Google Play's Data safety form adds detail: device IDs and user IDs are shared with third parties for analytics and advertising or marketing, and collection covers approximate location, installed apps, purchase history and a parent's email. Purchases sit behind a parent gate that asks for a year of birth, and the help center says Piknik apps may request camera, microphone, photo and notification access.

$5.99 a Month, $14.99 for Piknik, or the Netflix Edition

On the US App Store the Toca Hair Salon 4 Plan costs $5.99, and the help center describes the single-app plan as monthly. Piknik Unlimited adds nine more apps, including Toca Boca Jr, Sago Mini World and PAW Patrol Academy; playpiknik.com offers 30 free days, then $14.99 a month, and Google Play quotes $0.99 to $79.99 per item. The App Store still lists older one-off buys such as a $3.99 Makeup Pack and $0.99 theme packs. Prices vary by region and may change. Families who bought packs before the switch get a free lifetime subscription after signing in to a Piknik account. Netflix members have another route: Netflix, Inc. put its own edition on Google Play on October 29, 2025, with no ads and no in-app purchases. Google Play still labels the Piknik version Contains ads, although the developer's description says the game carries no third-party advertising.

  • Release notes since December 2023 list only bug fixes and tweaks

  • Age guidance conflicts: help says 3–6, Piknik 5–10, App Store 9–11

Verdict

We score it 6.8. Where Toca Boca World and Avatar World treat hair as one stop in a town, this game is only the salon: cut, regrow, dye, braid and rinse, with kidSAFE COPPA certification. The score drops for makeup behind a $5.99 monthly plan (US price), no new content since December 2023 and characters who move mid-cut. Take it for a young child who loves hair play. Skip it if free makeup was the draw, or check whether a Netflix plan covers the ad-free edition.

Gameplay7.5Cut, regrow, dye, braid and rinse loops stay open-ended, but makeup sits behind the Face Station purchase.
Controls6.5Drag-based tools need fine motor control; reviews say heads turn mid-cut, and there was no undo in 2020.
Replay value7.0No score or timer and a photo book for reopening looks, but no new content since December 2023.
Graphics & sound8.5Characters react with faces and noises as you style, and Apple lists the game as an Editors' Choice.
Monetisation5.5$5.99 single-app plan or $14.99 Piknik bundle (US), legacy packs still listed, and a Contains ads label.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Toca Hair Salon 4 offline?

Yes, after the first download. The help center says base items work without Wi-Fi or mobile data, and Google Play tags the game Offline. After buying a plan, connect once, open each station and tap the wrapped package so the new supplies download; from then on they work offline too. Linking a subscription to a Piknik account also needs a connection.

2

Is the makeup free in Toca Hair Salon 4?

No. The Face Station, with makeup and face paint, is a paid part of the salon. On the US App Store it comes with the $5.99 Toca Hair Salon 4 Plan or with Piknik Unlimited, which playpiknik.com prices at $14.99 a month after a 30-day trial; a $3.99 Makeup Pack is still listed too. Prices vary by region. The Netflix edition has no in-app purchases for Netflix members.

3

What devices does Toca Hair Salon 4 run on?

Android 7.0 or later, or iOS and iPadOS 13.0 or later on iPhone and iPad. The download is large for a children's game: over 500 MB on Android and about 690 MB on the App Store. The Netflix edition needs Android 8.0. The help center says the game itself is in English only, while parent-facing screens come in nine languages.

4

Can two kids play Toca Hair Salon 4 together?

Not in one session. Google Play tags it single player, and one character sits in the chair at a time. What can be shared is the subscription: a Piknik account unlocks paid content on up to 10 devices at once, across iOS and Android, so siblings can each style on their own tablet. The help center says gifting a plan is not available yet.

5

How long does a makeover take in Toca Hair Salon 4?

As long as the child wants. There is no score or goal to finish, so a look ends when they photograph it or switch characters. Common Sense Media noted in 2020 that the game has no obvious stopping point, so parents may want to set one. Saved looks go into an in-game photo book and can be reopened for more styling later.
