Brawl Stars Makes Duolingo's Owl a 20-Player Boss on September 19

Supercell announced on September 17 that Brawl Stars and Duolingo are crossing over from September 19 to September 30. Duo, the owl, becomes a boss in a new 20v1 mode built inside his classroom, and answering quiz questions mid-fight decides whether you get rewards or take damage. Duolingo, in turn, runs a Streak Quest that unlocks Spike in Brawl Stars.
What was announced
The announcement came from Supercell's Helsinki press release on September 17, after weeks of the two mascots trading jabs in each other's comments. The event runs September 19 to 30 in both apps.
In Brawl Stars the centrepiece is a 20v1 Boss Fight: twenty players team up against Duo in his classroom, and he gets stronger as the fight goes on. Quizzes pop up during the match — a correct answer rewards the player, a wrong one deals damage or knocks them out. Alongside the mode there is a community event: step into Duo's classroom to complete a lesson each day, then pass a final exam on the last day to unlock the collaboration reward.
In Duolingo the crossover works the other way round. Spike, the cactus brawler, appears in lessons through a limited-time Streak Quest: keep completing daily lessons to progress, and finishing the quest unlocks Spike as a playable brawler in Brawl Stars. Supercell's release does not list the individual cosmetic rewards by name.
What it means for players
Two things are worth planning around. The Duolingo quest is the cheapest way to get Spike if you do not own him: a lesson a day for the length of the quest, no gems. The daily-lesson event in Brawl Stars works on the same logic — miss too many days and you will not be eligible for the final exam on September 30.
The Boss Fight itself is a co-op mode, so it does not touch trophies or ranked. Twenty players in one match is the largest Brawl Stars has run in a permanent-style mode; expect queue times to be short during the first weekend and the boss to be tuned harder after the first few days, as Supercell usually does with limited modes.
Both apps are free; the Duolingo side needs an account but not Super Duolingo.
What happens next
The mode goes live on September 19 with the app update; the final exam and the last day to claim rewards is September 30. Supercell has not said whether the Duo boss will return after the event ends. Duolingo's Streak Quest follows the same window, so a streak started on September 19 covers the whole quest.
