NetEase and Starry Studio dated Once Human's largest update yet on September 21: Isles of Abyss goes live globally on October 22 — October 21 in Pacific time — free on phones, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play and cross-progression intact. It adds five ocean regions, ships that work as mobile bases, and a server-wide threat called the Sunken Lord.
What was announced
The date came with a trailer on September 21. Isles of Abyss arrives October 22 globally, October 21 Pacific, as a free update to Once Human on every platform it runs on — iOS, Android, PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — with cross-play and cross-progression unchanged.
What it adds, per the announcement:
- Five distinct sea regions on top of the existing Stardust-polluted land map.
- Ships as mobile bases. A vessel can be built out into a workshop and an armed sea fortress rather than being simple transport.
- A three-layer survival loop — the sea surface, islands, and underwater areas.
- New threats: ghost ships, predatory lighthouses, living islands that disguise themselves, and large mechanical creatures below the waterline.
- The Sunken Lord, an ancient entity the ocean itself turns out to be, tied to server-wide encounters.
Starry Studio frames it as the biggest content update since the game's 2024 launch.
What it means for players
For phone players the headline is that none of this is a separate purchase and none of it is a separate app: Once Human has kept one build across platforms, and an expansion of this size arriving on mobile at the same hour as on PC is still unusual in the genre.
The practical question is hardware. A sea map with ship physics, underwater layers and server-wide events is heavier than the existing land map, so expect the download to grow and mid-range phones to sit on lower settings. Cross-progression means you can start a ship on a phone and finish it on PC.
What happens next
The update lands on October 22 with the usual maintenance. Starry Studio has not said whether the current season ends first or runs alongside, and the in-game rules teased by the navigator character Malla — six of them, from her logbook — are the marketing hook rather than published mechanics.
