Citi Mobile Review: The Lock Switch Earns Its Place

Citi Quick Lock Freezes a Card in One Tap

The feature worth knowing before you need it sits under the card list. Quick Lock temporarily blocks new purchases, cash advances and non-recurring charges on a chosen card while leaving recurring payments running, and unlocking is the same switch. That distinction matters: a frozen card that also kills a subscription creates a second problem. Each card in the account has its own toggle, so a misplaced debit card can be shut down without touching the credit card in the same wallet. Nothing has to be cancelled or reissued if the card turns up in a coat pocket.

A Free FICO Score and ThankYou Points on the Same Screen

The score is a real FICO figure with six months of history and the factors behind it, included with select Citi cards at no charge. Rewards sit next to it: the ThankYou balance appears above the transaction list, so redeeming does not mean a separate portal. Payments cover the practical middle — AutoPay per card, a due date and minimum shown before the button, and a Dispute Charge link on the individual transaction rather than buried in support. Cheques deposit through the camera and an ATM finder maps branches by city.

$250 in Direct Deposits Clears the Monthly Fee

The app is free; the account is where money changes hands. Regular Checking waives its monthly service fee in any month with $250 or more in direct deposits or other qualifying transactions, and the fee also disappears for customers in the Citi Priority, Citigold and Citigold Private Client relationship tiers. Google Play records the collected data as personal information only, with location, personal information and app activity listed as shared with third parties — a shorter list than most banking apps declare, though the app has passed ten million Android installs.

Pros

  • Quick Lock freezes one card while recurring payments keep running
  • Free FICO score with six months of history included
  • Cards, checking, loans and investments share one home screen
  • Disputing a charge starts from the transaction itself
  • Rated 4.9 on the App Store across four million ratings

Cons

  • The free score is limited to select Citi cards
  • Checking fees return in any month without $250 deposited
  • Location and app activity are shared with third parties
  • Only useful if your accounts are already with this bank

Verdict

For Citi customers this is a strong app, and the 4.9 App Store average is not an accident: card controls, a free score and dispute filing all sit one tap from where the problem appears. Set up AutoPay and learn where Quick Lock lives on the first day. It is worth nothing at all to anyone who banks elsewhere, and the free score only covers select cards, so check yours before counting on it.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Citi Mobile app free?

Yes, with no in-app purchases and no advertising badge on its Play listing. Costs live in the accounts: Regular Checking charges a monthly service fee in any month without $250 in qualifying deposits, and card interest applies as normal. Everything the app does — payments, deposits, disputes, the score — is included.

2

What does Citi Quick Lock do?

It temporarily blocks new purchases and cash advances on one chosen card, while letting recurring charges you have already authorised continue. Each card has its own switch, and unlocking is instant. It is the right response to a card you cannot find, as opposed to reporting one you know is stolen.

3

How do you avoid the checking monthly fee?

Regular Checking waives the fee in any month with at least $250 in direct deposits or other qualifying transactions. It is also waived outright for customers in the Citi Priority, Citigold and Citigold Private Client tiers, which are set by combined balances rather than by anything you do in the app.

4

How do you dispute a charge?

Open the transaction in the card's activity list and use the Dispute Charge button on that screen, which carries the merchant details and posting date with it. That path avoids the phone queue for straightforward cases, and the status of the dispute then appears in the same app.

5

What are the alternatives?

Chase Mobile is the closest equivalent for people banking elsewhere, with a free credit score and commission-free trading built in. Cash App does payments and a card without a bank branch behind it. As always with bank apps, the account decides the app rather than the other way around.
