About Cash App

Cash App started as a way to send friends money and now runs most of a bank account: a balance with its own account and routing numbers, a Visa debit card with automatic discounts, savings that pay interest, direct deposit, and buttons for buying bitcoin or stocks. Block owns it and banking partners hold the money; FDIC pass-through cover applies only to customers with a Cash App Card or a sponsored account.

Cash App Review: 4.5% Savings, but Speed Costs Up to 2.5%

Savings Pays 4.5% With a $300 Direct Deposit

Interest here is conditional rather than headline. The base rate for savings sits at 3.25% for accounts with Cash App Green status, and reaching 4.5% requires being 18 or older, holding the Cash App Card and receiving at least $300 a month in qualifying direct deposits — a paycheck or benefits, not a transfer from a friend. Teen accounts aged 13 to 17 earn 3.5% under sponsorship. Interest accrues daily and lands monthly, there is no minimum balance, and saving can start at $1. Rates are US figures and move with the market.

Cash Out Instantly and It Costs Up to 2.5%

Standard transfers to a linked bank are free and take one to three business days. Instant ones charge between 0.5% and 2.5% of the amount depending on the transfer, with a minimum between $0.25 and $1 and a ceiling of $75. Paychecks routed into the app arrive up to two days early, which is the free version of the same speed. The Cash Card adds Boosts — advertised discounts applied at the till, currently including 20% off rideshares and coffee and 10% off groceries, dining and entertainment. Bitcoin and stock purchases sit in the same app, starting from small amounts.

Security Lock, Card Lock and the $250,000 Cover

Security Lock asks for a face scan, fingerprint or a 4-digit code before the app opens or a payment leaves, and Card Lock declines every charge on the card until you unlock it; both are worth switching on first. Alerts arrive for sign-ins, large transactions and changes to account settings, and unauthorised card charges fall under Zero Fraud Liability. The company says it will never ask for your sign-in code or PIN, which is the quickest way to spot an impostor. Balances are eligible for FDIC pass-through insurance up to $250,000 at partner banks only if you hold the Cash App Card or a sponsored account, and pending money is not covered. Google Play's card lists nine collected data categories, and the listing carries a Contains ads badge.

Verdict

As a second account it earns its place: a card with automatic discounts, savings that pay real interest if your paycheck lands here, and no monthly fee. Two things to weigh first — instant transfers cost up to 2.5% each time, and FDIC pass-through cover applies only once you hold the card. Keep the direct deposit, avoid the instant button, and switch on Security Lock on day one. Skip it if you want branch access or free instant transfers.

Core function8.5Payments, a card, savings and investing work together without leaving the app.
Ease of use8.5One keypad sends money; the Money tab holds balance, savings and bitcoin in a single scroll.
Monetisation7.0Free to hold, but instant cash out costs up to 2.5% and the best rate has conditions.
Performance8.0Handles card payments, transfers and market data on one connection without visible lag.
Privacy & permissions6.0Nine collected data categories and an ads badge, partly offset by Security Lock and Card Lock.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Cash App free?

Holding money, sending it to friends, the debit card and standard transfers out all cost nothing, and there is no monthly account fee. Charges appear when you want money moved immediately, or when you buy bitcoin or stocks, where a spread or fee applies to the trade rather than to the account.

2

What are Boosts?

Discounts attached to the Cash App Card and applied automatically when you pay, rather than as codes you have to remember. The current set includes 20% off rideshares and coffee and 10% off groceries, dining and entertainment. Each is chosen in the app beforehand and only one applies to a given purchase.

3

What does it cost to cash out instantly?

Between 0.5% and 2.5% of the amount, with a minimum of $0.25 to $1 and a maximum of $75 for a single transfer. The free route is the standard transfer, which reaches a linked bank in one to three business days. Direct deposit into the app arrives up to two days early at no cost.

4

How do you close a Cash App account?

Cash out the whole balance first, then tap the profile icon, choose Support and Account & Settings, and select Close Your Cash App Account. Closing disables your $cashtag, stops incoming payments and signs you out of every session. If the app is no longer installed, support can close the account and delete personal information by phone.

5

What are the alternatives?

Venmo covers the social half — splitting bills, notes on payments — and charges 1.75% for instant transfers. A traditional bank app such as Chase covers deposits and Zelle transfers with branch access behind it. Neither combines savings interest, a card and investing as tightly as this one does.
