About Trust: Crypto & Bitcoin Wallet

Trust Wallet is free to install; you pay network gas, fees set by the eight partners behind card and bank purchases, and swap provider fees shown before you confirm. Keys and a 12-word recovery phrase are generated on your phone and cover 100+ blockchains, and a Security Scanner previews each transaction. The catch: lose the phrase without a backup and nobody, including the developer, can restore access.

Trust Wallet Review: Your Keys on 100+ Chains, but No Reset for a Lost Phrase

Gas, 8 on-ramp partners and a swap fee official pages disagree on

With no subscription or in-app purchase in either store, every cost lands per transaction. Gas goes to the blockchain, in its native coin or, through FlexGas, in USDT, USDC or TWT on five EVM networks. Card and bank purchases run through eight partners such as MoonPay, Ramp and Transak, which price each order in real time; most start around $10. On swaps, the help center says no service fee is added, yet an August 2026 campaign waives the Trust Wallet swap fee on stablecoin pairs outside Ethereum, and the terms allow a revenue share from partner fees. MetaMask states a flat 0.875%. Check current fees in the app.

12 words, no reset: Manual Backup versus Encrypted Cloud Backup

The wallet is the recovery phrase: 12 words in a fixed order, created on the device and never stored by the developer, which says it cannot help anyone regain access. Setup does not force a backup, so funds can arrive before the words are written down. Manual Backup, in the three-dot menu beside the wallet name, reveals them after a PIN, and the app blocks screenshots. The optional Encrypted Cloud Backup keeps an encrypted copy in your iCloud or Google Drive, behind a password the company cannot reset either. Swift, a passkey wallet without a phrase launched in February 2024, is closed to new users. The Coinbase exchange app, by contrast, holds coins in a custodial account.

Two Chrome extension breaches, 2022 and 2025, and the Security Scanner

Both public incidents hit the Chrome extension, and the developer said mobile-only users were unaffected each time. In November 2022 a WebAssembly flaw in address generation cost users about $170,000, The Block reported, and refunds were offered. On December 24–26, 2025, an attacker used a leaked Chrome Web Store key, which the company links to the Sha1-Hulud supply-chain attack, to publish a malicious version 2.68. The company counted 2,520 drained addresses, tied about $8.5 million to the attacker's wallets and reimburses claims that pass ID and KYC checks. In the app, the Security Scanner simulates transactions on supported networks and flags known drainer contracts, but brand-new ones and some off-chain signatures can slip past.

September 15, 2026: 24 networks dropped, and what the data labels say

On September 15, 2026, the network list lost 24 chains, among them Nano, MultiversX, Moonbeam and Decred; Trust Handles, readable names stored on the FIO network, stopped working on September 7. Coins stay on their blockchains, and EVM chains can be re-added as custom networks, but non-EVM ones need the phrase imported into another wallet. Google Play's data label declares nothing shared with third parties and lists app interactions, crash logs and device IDs; Apple's lists only diagnostics not linked to you. The privacy notice says no email is collected to run a wallet and requires users to be 18, older than both store ratings. Disputes go to individual arbitration in Hong Kong.

Pros

  • Recovery phrase and private keys are generated and kept on your device
  • Security Scanner simulates transactions and flags known drainer contracts before signing
  • FlexGas pays network fees in USDT or USDC on five EVM networks
  • Covers 100+ blockchains and over 10 million assets in one wallet
  • On-ramp fees are set by eight named partners, not by the wallet
  • No account, email, ads or in-app purchases are needed to start

Cons

  • Lose the phrase and the cloud-backup password, and funds cannot be recovered
  • Official pages disagree on whether a Trust Wallet swap fee exists at all
  • Support for 24 networks, including Nano and MultiversX, ended September 15, 2026
  • 28 of 150 newest Play reviews were 1–2 stars, citing stuck transfers and scams

Verdict

We score Trust Wallet 7.2 for covering 100+ blockchains with keys kept on the phone and a Security Scanner that shows what each signature does. Contradictory swap-fee pages, 24 dropped networks and many 1–2-star reviews about stuck transfers pull it down. Take it if you want one self-custody wallet across several chains and will store 12 words offline. Skip it if you want someone who can reset access, or hold coins on a chain it no longer lists.

Ease of use6.5Backup is optional at setup, and swap costs split across Provider Fee, Routing Fee and slippage fields.

Frequently asked questions

1

Does Trust Wallet charge fees?

Not to install or hold coins, but transactions cost money: network gas on every send and swap, partner fees from MoonPay, Ramp and others on card and bank purchases, and a provider fee on the swap summary. The help center says the wallet adds no service fee; campaign pages describe a swap fee waived on stablecoin pairs.

2

What happens if I lose my Trust Wallet recovery phrase?

You lose access for good unless another backup exists. The developer never stores the 12-word phrase, so support cannot restore it. Encrypted Cloud Backup, if enabled, opens only with the password you set, which cannot be reset either. Deleting the app does not erase coins, but without the phrase they cannot be reached.

3

Who sets the fee when you buy crypto in Trust Wallet?

The third-party provider does, not the wallet. Purchases route through partners such as MoonPay, Banxa, Mercuryo, Ramp and Transak, varying by region. Cards are usually faster with higher fees, bank transfers cheaper but slower, and most orders start near $10. Confirm the current terms with the provider before paying.

4

Can I move my Trust Wallet to another wallet app?

Yes. The 12-word phrase restores the same wallet in any compatible app, which is also the official route for non-EVM chains dropped on September 15, 2026, such as Nano and MultiversX. EVM chains from that list can instead be re-added as custom networks. Deleting a wallet only removes it from the phone; the coins stay on the blockchain.

5

Is Trust Wallet safe to use?

The mobile app was not affected by either publicly reported incident; both hit the Chrome extension, in 2022 and 2025. Keys stay on the device and the Security Scanner previews transactions, but transfers cannot be reversed. Genuine emails come only from @trustwallet.com, and the company never asks for your phrase. MetaMask and the custodial Coinbase app are alternatives.
