About Chase Mobile: Bank & Invest

Chase Mobile is the phone half of a full US bank: balances and statements, Zelle transfers, cheque deposits by camera, a budgeting screen that projects the rest of the month, a free credit score, and commission-free trading through J.P. Morgan in the same navigation bar. The app is free; the account behind it is not necessarily, and the monthly fee on the standard checking account is $15 unless one of three conditions is met.

Chase Mobile Review: The $15 Question

The $15 Monthly Fee and Three Ways Around It

Total Checking carries a $15 monthly service fee, waived in any statement period with at least $500 in qualifying electronic deposits, a balance of $1,500 at the start of each day, or $5,000 as an average daily balance across linked accounts and investments. The definition of a qualifying deposit matters more than the number: payroll and government payments through ACH, RTP or FedNow count, while Zelle transfers, cash, cheques, wires and interest do not. That distinction catches people who assume money arriving from a friend each month is enough to clear the fee.

Credit Journey, Budget and Commission-Free Trades

Three things here go beyond checking a balance. Credit Journey shows a credit score inside the app at no cost. The budget screen splits the month into what has been spent, what is left and how many days it has to last, with a projection of potential savings rather than a static category list. And self-directed trading through J.P. Morgan sits in the same app with unlimited commission-free trades on stocks and ETFs, so an investment account does not mean a second login. Cheques deposit through the camera, and Zelle payments send from a chosen account with a memo.

Zelle Arrives in Minutes and Cancels Only Before Enrollment

The transfer button people use most carries no Chase fee and usually delivers within minutes when the recipient's email or US mobile number is already enrolled, though some payments take one to two business days. The bank sets a limit for each transaction and shows it in the app before you confirm. The catch is finality: a payment can be cancelled only while the recipient has not yet enrolled, and neither the bank nor Zelle covers goods paid for and never received. The surrounding tools help: a debit or credit card can be locked from the app without stopping automatic payments, and fraud alerts arrive without any sign-up whenever unusual activity is detected.

Pros

  • Banking, Zelle, budgeting and investing share one login
  • Credit score included at no cost inside the app
  • Cheques deposit by camera without visiting a branch
  • Unlimited commission-free stock trades through J.P. Morgan
  • Rated 4.8 on both stores across millions of ratings

Cons

  • Standard checking charges $15 a month unless conditions are met
  • Zelle transfers do not count towards waiving that fee
  • Zelle payments are effectively irreversible once sent
  • Data safety card lists seven collected categories, shared with third parties

Verdict

For an existing customer this is one of the better bank apps in the country, and the extras — a free credit score, a budget that projects rather than reports, commission-free trading — are things rivals charge for or omit. The $15 monthly fee decides whether the account is worth having, and the qualifying-deposit rule is stricter than most people assume. Anyone without a Chase account gains nothing here, and Zelle users should know a payment cannot be cancelled once the recipient has enrolled.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Chase Mobile app free?

The app costs nothing to download and use, and there are no in-app purchases. Fees belong to the account: standard checking is $15 a month unless a waiver condition is met, while other account types carry different terms. Nothing inside the app is paywalled once the account exists.

2

What is Credit Journey?

A credit score with history, included in the app at no charge. It sits alongside the accounts rather than on a separate site, updates without a hard inquiry, and shows what moved the number. It is useful before applying for anything, which is also why the bank puts it there.

3

How do you avoid the $15 monthly fee?

Any one of three conditions in a statement period clears it: $500 or more in qualifying electronic deposits, $1,500 in the account at the start of every day, or a $5,000 average daily balance across linked accounts and investments. Payroll and government deposits qualify; Zelle, cash, cheques and wires do not.

4

Can you send money to someone at another bank?

Yes, through Zelle, which is built into the payments tab and sends to a phone number or email at almost any US bank. Two cautions: those transfers are effectively final, and they do not count as qualifying deposits when the bank calculates whether to waive the monthly fee.

5

What are the alternatives?

Citi Mobile covers the same ground for Citi customers and rates slightly higher on the App Store. Cash App handles payments, a card and savings without a branch network behind it. The realistic choice is set by where the account is: a bank app is only as good as the bank it belongs to.
