About Coinbase: Buy Crypto & Stocks

Coinbase buys, sells and holds crypto, with stocks now sitting beside it, and pushes a membership that removes trading fees up to a monthly volume cap. The three tiers cost $4.99, $29.99 and $299.99 a month. What no tier removes is the spread folded into the displayed price, so a trade marked as fee-free still costs a slice of the quote.

Coinbase Review: Zero Fees That Still Keep the Spread

Three Tiers: $4.99, $29.99 and $299.99

The entry membership is $4.99 a month, or $49.99 for a year, and covers zero trading fees on up to $500 of trading each month. The middle tier at $29.99 raises that ceiling to $10,000, and the $299.99 tier removes it. The app makes the pitch directly: a completed order showing 0.012423 BTC with a $14.68 fee struck through. The exclusion is the one worth understanding — the spread built into the buy and sell price is not a fee the membership waives, so it applies at every tier, on every trade, on top of whatever you pay each month.

Rewards, the Card and Advanced Trade Share One Grid

The home screen puts Buy, Send, Receive and Scan in the top row, then Card, Rewards, a self-custody wallet and Advanced trade underneath, with a watchlist of quotes below that. Advanced trade is the part experienced users want: an order book with maker and taker pricing rather than the simple buy button, and materially lower costs on size. A promotional screen offers 5% rewards for holding USDC, described as pegged one-to-one to the dollar and backed by cash and short-dated US treasuries. That rate is set by the company and moves with interest rates rather than being fixed.

Two-Step Verification Before the First Trade

Onboarding puts security second in a four-step flow: create the account, then switch on two-step verification, before any money moves. For a category where a compromised login means an irreversible loss, making that a step rather than a setting is the right decision. Google Play's data card lists eight collected categories and declares nothing shared with third parties, which is rare among the finance apps here. Apple's label is blunter: identifiers used to track you, with financial information, purchases, contact details and sensitive information linked to your identity. Ratings run 4.3 on Play and 4.7 on the App Store.

Pros

  • Zero trading fees up to each tier's monthly volume
  • Two-step verification is part of setup, not an option
  • No data sharing declared on the Play data card
  • Advanced trade and a self-custody wallet in one app
  • Rated 4.7 on the App Store across 1.8 million ratings

Cons

  • The spread survives every membership tier
  • Fee-free trading stops at $500 a month on the entry tier
  • Apple's label lists identifiers used to track you
  • Pricing jumps from $29.99 straight to $299.99 a month

Verdict

Solid as an on-ramp: the security step is built into setup, the data card is unusually clean, and Advanced trade means you do not outgrow it. The pricing is where judgement is needed — a fee-free trade still pays the spread, and $500 of monthly volume on the entry tier goes fast. Worth a membership only if you trade regularly; otherwise pay per trade and skip it.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Coinbase app free?

The app itself is free, with no advertising badge and no in-app purchase badge on Google Play. Trading is what costs: a spread inside the quoted price plus a fee that varies with order size and payment method. The membership removes the second of those two, never the first.

2

What does the membership actually remove?

The flat and percentage trading fees, up to a monthly volume ceiling that depends on the tier — $500 on the entry plan, $10,000 in the middle, uncapped at the top. Members also get boosted staking rewards and rewards on USDC balances. The price spread is charged regardless.

3

How much do the tiers cost?

$4.99 a month, or $49.99 annually, for the entry plan; $29.99 a month for the mid tier; $299.99 a month for the uncapped one. Whether any of them pays back depends entirely on monthly trading volume — below a few hundred dollars of activity, per-trade fees are cheaper.

4

Can the spread be avoided?

Not through a subscription, but Advanced trade replaces the simple buy button with an order book and maker-taker pricing, which costs less on any meaningful size. It is the same account and the same balance, presented as a trading screen rather than a shop front, and it takes some learning.

5

What are the alternatives?

Kraken offers similar custody with lower headline trading costs and a smaller US asset list. Robinhood trades crypto beside stocks with no separate subscription. Moving coins to a hardware wallet removes exchange risk entirely, at the cost of being solely responsible for the recovery phrase.
